Celebrating in Germany!! ======================================================================== Date: 22-JUN-1992 18:28:38.95 From: MTARR@eagle.wesleyan.edu Subject: New album Hi! Doug reminds: >Hey, people! Just nine days until the famous Happy Birthday Project deadline >(July 1st). If you want to participate, do so today! (C'mon, Burks, that >means you, too! :) ). ACK! I had NO IDEA it was this close.... gads. I should've thought about it- I measure my summers by tennis Grand Slam events, and it's Wimbledon already! (Where oh where does the time go...) Tim inquires: >If the next album (does anybody know what it's going to be called? or >even a working title?) had more real instruments and fewer >``synthetic'' sounds (especially the drums and cymbals!) that would be >fantastic. Does anybody in the know have any ideas what direction the >instrumentation and arrangments might take? Any wild speculation? Well, I know a lot of people have speculated, but I wanted to add my voice to the fray anyway. :) I do think she will use real bass and drums on the new one- she's used real bass before ("Ecto" comes to mind), and I'm sure she'll use the drums to keep the sound of the new ones she performed live intact. Angelos writes: > In fact the only thing I did NOT like from the live show were those *long* > synth intros for some songs... And Jessica responds: >Hmmmmmm.. I thought they were fantastic!!! Listening to the tapes of >both albany and philly (though i tihnk it was more predominant in >albany) one of the things i really like are the intros.. growing >little by little, adding bit's 'til it really becomes the song.. i >thought they were done very well.. building suspense and energy.. A agree totally. I liked how the intros would start you thinking the next song was something completely different from what it was- at the beginning of "Feed The Fire", for example, I was conviced "Phobos" was next- and every time I listen to the tape the same thing happens. Hm... people have been talking about favorites and such- I think it's time for me to work that one out and post it when I get the chance. Hi, Claudia! Wie geht's beim Digest-lesen? :) ======================================================================= |Meredith A. (Jody looking into mirror) I am going to make a good post today. Some may like it. Others may not. And that's okay. Others may not like *me*. That's okay too. But I will overcome such adversity because I'm smart enough, I'm strong enough, and gosh darn it, people like me! (Jody turns from mirror) Hi! Welcome to Daily Affirmation. I'm Jody Ferguson. With me today is Steve VanDevender. Steve and I recently had a disagreement...and that's okay. People don't always get along. I took offense at one of his posts that I thought was hostile toward another person not on Ecto. He took offense at my taking offense. Other people have gotten involved. It got blown out of proportion. But now here he is to further clarify his position. Steve? >My main intention was to note that Cynthia Rosas, who had not >posted to rec.music.gaffa for a long time, reappeared within days >of the return of Vickie, who had not posted to ecto or r.m.g for >a long time either. Others, including Vickie and Melissa >Caldwell, have already commented in r.m.g about this coincidence, >and referred to an old joke that Cynthia and Vickie are actually >the same person. To a certain extent, I was trying to imply that >Cynthia was an old adversary (but not a current one), and I did >feel that it was bizarre and ironic (but not perverted) that >Cynthia would resurface by coincidence at almost the same time as >Vickie, as if they were karmically linked. But you are putting >an exclusively bad spin on the whole interpretation, as if my >whole intent was to slam Cynthia, which is wrong. Well, gee Steve. I'm sorry. Yes, I guess I did take it wrong. I screwed up. And that's okay. People screw up from time to time. It's natural. I would like you to know that I would never originate any bad feelings to anyone on Ecto, being the lurker I was. My intent was never to slam you in return for the slam I imagined you made toward Cynthia. And I guess I did imagine it, didn't I? Silly me! My only intent was to make it clear what one of many reasons I had for unsubscribing was. I didn't even mention your name on my original post. I mentioned merely what had been said that irked me. It's okay that I was irked. People get irked sometimes. The ability to become irked is part of human nature. And that's okay. >If my earlier reply didn't get through, then I will state again >that Cynthia and I are not enemies. At one point in the past I >disagreed with her confrontational approach and argued with her >about it, but she has mellowed since then and I am more willing >to ignore her attempts to rile people. Oh, a "taming of the shrew" so to speak. How nice. Well, if Cynthia is a confrontational person...that's okay. Or it should be. No one should ever try to change the nature of another person. I too am very confrontational when I see what I consider an injustice. Hence (what I thought would be) my final post. Maybe I should have ignored it since I don't know any of the people in question. I guess some have the right to rile and others do not. Yes, it is true that I never read the Ectoprotocol pledge. A pledge meant to be ridiculous, but could it possibly be close to truth? "The Unwritten Law"? But I digress.... Steve? >If you haven't seen a nasty remark about anyone in Ecto before, >you haven't been a long-time subscriber or you weren't paying >attention. Ecto participants are not unfailingly benevolent. Well...maybe I have on occasion. And that's okay I guess. But I have never seen one directed at someone who doesn't subscribe. Except maybe Tori Amos. And I'm sure she couldn't care less. It just seemed somehow different to me in that Cynthia isn't really a public figure. Truth be told, I'm sure Cynthia couldn't care less either. And that's more than okay. >And to prove that (Ecto participants are not unfailingly benevolent), I >am going to say that I find your continued arguments about this >tiresome and pointless. You take one sentence from one of my posts, >interpret it in the worst possible way, then attempt to justify and >rejustify your position from an interpretation that I have already >tried to tell you is wrong, as if I couldn't possibly know what my >intention really was or that no other interpretation of that sentence >was reasonable. "Your story has grown tiresome. Now it is the time on Sprockets where we dance..." Well I was actually explaining to Jessica why I drew the conclusions I drew. Since she CC'ed Ecto, I did too. I wasn't "attempt(ing) to justify and rejustify (my) position". I said in my "Private Idaho" post that I would respond to people in the same manner that they posted to me. Promise kept. And that's okay. I did deviate from the order of receipt, though. Meredith was supposed to be next. Yours was just mean enough to demand more immediate attention. I never aimed at you. Just what you said. My only problem was with your words, but it seems you have a problem with me. Oh well, I'm gone anyway. *sniff* You won't have me to kick around anymore. *SOB* (I'm sorry. I don't usually get so emotional.) In the future, all responses will be made in private e- mail UNLESS they are responding to future messages posted to me and CC'ed to Ecto. As Wilford Brimley says, "it's the right thing to do." >I have nothing against you leaving the mailing list if you don't >like it. Especially if your participation is going to consist >mostly of criticizing people's posts rather than criticizing >music. Well to tell you the truth, I wasn't criticizing "people's" posts. Just the one. And that's a first, so I must have felt that it warranted it. I don't generally say anything. Until recently, my name wasn't seen much around these parts, now wuz it? And since it has been established that I am COMPLETELY wrong about my interpretation of that post, It won't be seen again unless it's in the aforementioned response. Good reason to keep it in private e-mail, ain't it? >Now I really am getting bitchy. I didn't sign Angelos's >Ectoprotocol Pledge either. Well Steve...that's okay. BYE NOW. (Jody turns back to mirror) Well. I suppose things *DO* get blown out of proportion, but that's okay. I *love* that album, although my favorite is "Rearmament". I mean, anybody who could listen to that masterpiece (all the more stunning for its two-week gestation period (hmmmm...should I make comments about rendering up the spout? probably not. besides, Kevin was out of town-- that was the whole point. Ouch! I'll stop now)) and not be awestruck simply doesn't deserve welcoming. You still have a chance, though. Retract your statement, admit the superiority of "Ecto" and "Would That I Could" and "Ode" and "Poetic Justice" and "Project 499" and "I Won't Back Down" and "To Be E. Mortal" and "If So" and "I Cannot Go On" and all the other great songs on _Ecto_ and I'll welcome you back to the list with open arms. ;-) (well, sort of..._ecto_ is probably my favorite Happy album) Jeff |Jeffrey C. HAPPY BIRTHDAYS TO John, Ken & Dave!! WELCOME BACK TO Vishal!! GOODBYE TO Jody...(Mountains out of Molehills...sheesh!) Hey, would anybody be interested in calling and leaving a message on our answering machine for Happy. Those who don't have access to a recorder, but still want a personal message to go on the HBP? Steve VanD did it last time, and it seemed to work out ok. Chip & Kiri are going to be coming over sometime this week to record their messages at "Gaffa Central" and I'll be mailing off a tape to Mr. Footah himself with our messages & songs. I can put your messages on that tape and Gregger can sort it all out at his end (Bwahhhhhahahaha!!) If So (Ecto, 1987) then just give us a call. The machine should be on during the day, but at night it might not be, so you'll have to call twice, once to alert us to turn the machine on, second to give the actual message. WARNING: Due to technical problems (a result of our "Deeper Understanding" hotline back in 1989) the machine will only record for 30 seconds, so you'll have to keep it short and simple. I'm one pleased lady..I just came back from the record store. I couldn't find anything I went there to look for. Loreena McKennitt-I found The Visit at a used record store for $7.00 a few weeks ago, but I wanted all her others on CD. Nope. Mari Boine Persen-(THANKS FOR THE DUB KLAUS!!) Nope. Eleftheria-Nope. Warpaint-just checking. Nope. Varttina-(THANKS PERTTU!! Perttu?? PERTTU???) Nope. Nadieh-Nope. Gyan-Nope. Sheila Chandra's new one-Nope. Geez, and this is a store that prides themselves on import CDs! Walking around moping, I happened to notice the new Mouth Music Cd single! Yay! Then, for the 1000th time, I checked the Portugal section and YES! There was a CD of Fernanda Maria, the exact one I wanted too!! (Those who got my "International Sampler" have a few songs, but they were a dub from a dub.) Finding those 2 made an otherwise disappointing day at the record store very pleasing indeed! The Fernanda Maria CD was fairly cheap for an import and it has 25 songs on it. It's all traditional Portugese songs, so it's not going to appeal to everyone, but I like it. The only disappointing thing about it is that there have been 2 songs so far (I'm listening to it now) sung by a man. The reason I like Fernanda so much is her voice, and the way she makes these tradional songs sound fresh and new, even without any modern touches. This guy sounds like a lovesick puppy. Ugh! (Nothing wrong with lovesick puppies, mind you, I just want more Fernanda!) Plus, it seems common for many "International" albums by women to have men singing on one or more tracks. Why? I think the record companies think the things won't sell unless there are men on them. Closer to home, we found (finally) kd lang's 1st album on CD a couple of weeks ago and paid (ouch!) $20.00 for it (it was labeled an "Import" and we bought it because we thought we might never see it again.) I lovelovelove kd and it's great to finally have a complete set of CDs, but 1) the CD is less than 30 minutes long and 2) there's a *GUY* singing on one track! Not just backup vocals either! Grrr! I know that ravings like this make me sound like a real sexist toward male singers and I'm not really, but my goodness, when I buy albums by *women* I like, I expect to get an entire album by that woman. (Of course, now I'll make a hypocrite of myself and say that I just love it when *male* bands use female singers on certain songs. Laibach using Germania, Style Council using Tracey Thorn, etc.) Would it come as a suprise to anybody if I said that I *don't* like Mitch Elrod on "Wrong Century?" Peter Gabriel-yes, Mitch Elrod-no. Cute quote: "Sure I go to church. But I'm not one of those guys who opens a meeting with a prayer. When I run into a guy like that I just button my wallet because he's gonna pick it for the Lord."
