This list is simply amazing...A *big* thank you (or should it be THANK YOU :) ) to jessica for starting/maintaining it and making sure that it is, and will be among the best mailing lists around. And also another big *THANK YOU* to all ectophiles without whom this list wouldn't be the same. Angelos PS. Arson Garden were absolutely great. April is *so* funny... Their next stop is Richmond VA, where hopefully they will play to more than the 3 people who showed up in Baltimore... Some other points of interest: I called Pennsylvania Public Radio today to see when Happy's thing on ECHOES is to be broadcast. Apparently I was the second one today, so who was the first? 'Fess up! :) I explained the concept of the list to the woman on the other end, and when she asked what it was called and I said, "Ecto", she started laughing and said, "Of course!" Someone familiar with Happy's music- good sign! The show is going to be transmitted on July 2nd. Unfortunately for me, the station in Stamford I found doesn't pick up the ECHOES from the Thursday feed- just the Tuesday and Wednesday. :P She did seem to think that if I called the station and begged they could be persuaded to make an exception, so I'm going to try tomorrow. It will, however, be broadcast from 3-5AM on the 3rd on WFUZ 90.7FM in the Bronx- Barry, can you pick that up? Jess? I'll let y'all know if I succeed in getting WSHU in Stamford to change their policy. :} Yeah, right. But I can at least try... And one other thing: FYI, Greg, Jody's got the same number of Y-chromosomes you do. ======================================================================= |Meredith A. I'm sorry you didn't find Happy to your liking- if you know of anyone who would enjoy the sampler, feel free to pass it along. :) I don't know how soon you got unsubscribed, but your post has gotten quite a bit of reaction, and I thought I'd clarify a few things that you brought up: First of all, Steve's remark about Cynthia's return was meant to be a tongue-in-cheek observation, since even she has likened herself to an Anti-Vickie on .gaffa and it was rather interesting that her return coincided almost exactly with Vickie's. Steve found that also amusing, so he mentioned it. I can see where you would think it was a bitchy thing to do, I also thought that, though I also thought it amusing, as well. I don't think you can really consider it "back-biting", since Cynthia has as much evidence to the Ecto Archives as anyone else, and there has been evidence that she has used that access a few times. I don't have a problem with that. As far as dissenting opinions not being tolerated on the list, well, that is quite frankly bullshit. woj hasn't been around lately, so there haven't been as many as there could be (:), but I've seen blatant worship on the nets, and believe me, this doesn't even approach the hagiography I see on the GEnie SFRT. St. Happy of Rhodes she's not, and all mention of her belonging to some sort of Holy Trinity is purely a joke, and is meant that way. There are some songs of hers I cannot listen to because I can't stand them, and I fast-forward through them all the time. But I don't talk about it on the list, usually because I'm too busy talking about something else, usually other artists. I think that may be some of the reason you only see (mostly) positive response to Happy on Ecto- we've got other things on our minds, and it's more fun to praise than to bitch sometimes. I think the atmosphere of Ecto is the most comfortable on the net, but some people are turned off by it, and I can see where they would be, too. I wasn't turned off by your post by the content at all- rather, I was turned off by the tone. I should think that after all this time of reading the list, you would have picked up on the general open-mindedness of the group. Just because we have an ability that is all too rare on the nets- the ability to have a healthy discussion that doesn't degenerate into useless flaming- doesn't mean we are closed to opposing viewpoints. As Angelos put it, opposing viewpoints are necessary to any discussion of art, to keep it honest and vigorous, and, most of all, constructive. I'm not trying to lure you back to the group or anything- it's stupid to subscribe to a list devoted to an artist you've discovered you don't like. I thought it necessary to give you the other side of the question. It's been some sort of rare luck that has kept Ecto what it is- I hope we don't ever lose it, although the odds are that one of these days we will. Openness has given the list its character- closedness isn't in the equation at all, and I'm truly sorry we gave you the wrong impression. (I have CCd this to the list, since this letter contains everything I wanted to put in a post addressing the issues your post has raised. I hope you don't mind- I didn't want to do it without your knowledge.) ======================================================================= |Meredith A. Yet another intro from a newbie to Ecto. I lurked for a few digests to get a feeling for the flow here and now I'm jumping in. I found Happy at a local record store (sounds like a religous experience, eh?) and got on the Internet at roughly the same time. I saw Warpaint sitting up on the display above the bins and pulled it down to have a look. The song titles were intriguing, especially "Words were'nt meant for cowards" (a favorite song now), and it was enough to get me to buy it even though I was put off a bit by the name *Happy*. Since, I'm here on Ecto I guess it's safe to say I liked the CD, a lot. I'm sure everyone is sick of the Kate comparisons but I just have a quick story to share. I was listening to the CD when a friend dropped by. We chatted for a few minutes then she paused and looked at me strangely and said, "I can't believe you didn't tell me Kate had a new album." At the time "Words..." was the track playing. I said it wasn't Kate and she didn't beleive me (I guess my trickster nature is too well known...). I had to dig out the case, which had gotten buried somewhere since it was the only thing I had been listening to for a few days, to prove it to her. Well, just a few things towards an intro. I'm 22 - born June 23, 1969 - and my shoe is a size 9 (actually, both of them are). I work at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY and they are the kind providers of my Net access. I listen to a lot of the stereotypical "ethereal" female vocalists; Happy, Kate, Tori, Enya (In that order ) and a whole bunch of other things ranging from rap to alternative, classical to industrial. As long as it has emotion almost anything appeals to me, for the most part. So, there it is. I look forward to participating here and hearing more from you all. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is our life. What a chase it has been. [...] Thanks for all the "thanks" !! Your're welcome and, believe me, the pleasure is all mine. I feel that Happy's music is finally getting to a lot of people who would appreciate it most. I have a vision of the songs as rare and precious jewels in a darkened one-room glass house. I'm outside urging people to go in and look. It's very hard to get inside the house though. You have to make a special effort to get there. Very slowly, a few start making that effort to enter and they go in with flashlights. Larry Hernandez was the first to enter. He deserves special credit. Then Michael Peskura, then Mark Semich, then Gregory Bossert, then Jeff Burka, then Mike Mendelson. As more people entered and looked they started coming out with me and joining their voices with mine, urging people to come in too. Then, because of those people helping me, the lights were turned on in the house. Now, lots of readers are either oohing and aahing or waiting for their goodies to arrive so they can see what the fuss is about. Those still undecided will hopefully buy at least one of the albums at some point. The lights are on and we can play a big part in getting the sun to rise on the very wonderful House'O'Happy! Please keep up with the posts about your reactions. I can't TELL you how great they are to read! After being a lonely Happyfan for so very, very long (seems like forever!), it's fascinating to hear other people talk about songs that I know well and have never heard anyone else talk about. Sure, I've been playing Happy on the radio in Kansas City since 1988, but not that many listeners actually took the time and effort to send away for the tapes. Those who did never called me up to talk about specific songs (except for one guy who was obsessed with "The Wretches Gone Awry"), so...talk about a Happy delirium...the one _I'm_ in now is the BIGGEST one of all!!!!! Bless you, all who have posted about Happy. [...] Kevin and Happy are thinking SERIOUSLY about putting all four tapes on CD. Kevin was wondering if it would be worth the expense involved.
