Happy Birthday New to group ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 29 May 92 14:18 GMT From: Merow!! Meow everyone..hope exams arent TOO bad for those of us still suffering from examitis!!! Personally I have four more exams, but since I really only have to pass, not do well, I am not *too* concerned!! Fuzzy blue thanks to Chip for the wonderful pictures!! Chip, I have to tell you that you have this knack for coming out with some weird but interesting shots!! Why is it that in your group pictures you never caught us in front of the letters, whereas Klaus' (positioned the same place) never FAILED to delete a letter?? *sigh* another mystery of the world!! ANyway, I really like the pictures alot..thank you! I just got back from my visit with Stephen in Canterbury this past weekend. I was hoping to meet with Terry but timing didnt allow unfortunately! However, Stephen and I did have a chance to pop into London for the 10th Birthday party of Homeground! Kate wasnt there but it was neat seeing the HG editors and chatting with them, and also nicking posters off the walls. They had xeroxed and blown up alot of the earlier issue covers as well as the cartoon drawing for the party itself and like Jessica..I was quick to snatch and conceal! =)!!! Jessica..there IS a psychology to grabbing off goodies off the walls!!! We also got to see the 3 hour vidoe presentation that Dave Cross of HG put together of Kates work..he had also updated it from 1990's convention by adding in Rocket Man footage!!! All in all a wonderful day and weekend!! After Canterbury I went to London to say goodbye to a friend who is returning to Anerica this Monday. Together Hope and I went to Highgate Cemetery and I managed to get some wonderful shots of angel and animal tomb monuments! They had some great stuff to shoot and I had the black and white film that my mom had..I will let all interested know how they turn out, and I will be more than happy to share them with anyone who would like to see them! Well..guess thats it for now... I would also like to make a request for my sister Kiri. SHe is going thru a really bad time right now and I would like it if everyone could take a minute and send a quick word to your guardian angel..personal religion/belief in her behalf. I am sure she will appreciate it and *I* certainly would! Thanks... Quite spiff, as one might expect from her. I was rather intrigued to realize that a lot, if not all, of the lyrics are in English--and apparently having at least _something_ to do with the film _Far and Away_ (the song is played during the credits of the movie, or so I've heard). At the very end, Enya is quite distinctly singing "far and away" to the melody. Anyone heard anything of a single release, or will the English version only be on the _Far and Away_ soundtrack? BTW, one segment in the video brings new definition to the "pop-up book" idea--characters from the movie pop up from the book Enya has in front of her--really neat stuff! Jeff |Jeffrey C. If not, I guess I'll have to straighten it all out in a couple of months. : From: klaus@inphobos.w.open.de (Cosmic Vagabond) : Date: Tue, 24 Mar 92 22:23:48 GMT : Stephen of Philly: : > One last non-Happy question, I want to pick up a Dead Can Dance album. : > Throw your suggestions my way. Thanks. : I started with their 1991 compilation, called "A passage in time". : 16 Tracks summing up to 64 minutes. It's a great compilation which : contains all of my favourite tunes. The only problem with it I've : found, is that if you go and buy their other albums, there isn't : that much more left. You already have all the good ones. hmmm... If I was going to put together a DCD compilation, I would have chosen about the same number of songs, but onlz about 2 or 3 of the ones found on PIT would have been on MZ compilation... I feel stronglz that PIT is not a good representation of DCD's best tracks, although it is a good sampler that gives zou a good idea of the different kinds of stuff the band does, and if someone has no other waz of hearing stuff bz the group before actuallz purchasing something bz them, then PIT is a good 'first CD' to buz. Do not let Klaus' remark discourage zou from getting the older discs though - if zou like certain tracks on PIT, zou'll like the other tracks on the corresponding recordings even better (IMHO). The onlz reason I got PIT was because of the two previouslz unreleased tracks, which I am quite wild about. another DCD comment - I think there's a new Patrick Swazye movie out which has DCD doing the soundtrack. It isn't new material though.. Has anzone seen the movie? anz comments? Angelos - I am listening to the apbaniktah cd as I tzpe this message, and it indeed is beautiful! I am so glad I had a second chance to hear it since I was kind-of trashed at that late hour at Greg's house and wasn't able to fullz appreciate it. Do zou happen to have an extra copz of the CD which I can buz off of zou next time I see zou? I also got a tape of Tori Amos which will tide me over until I get to Newburz Comics. I'm sure that I'll love it once I have enough of a chance to listen to it, but so far I just heard it once in the background while doing other things, and it does sound nice although I didn't find it inspired instant fanatical devotion in me like Happz Rhodes or Bel Canto did... I'll reserve further comment until I had a chance to reallz listen to it though. LOREENA MCKENNITT - This is kind-of a message addressed to Justin Foote, but if anozne else saw her live, I'd love to hear about it. How was she when she plazed in Montreal last Februarz? I am thinking of joining her fan club once I have a home-address. _____________________________________________________ ) European Ectophile Party, Wuppertal, Germany ( ( write to us at ectoparty@inphobos.w.open.de ) ======================================================================== Subject: dies und das From: klaus@inphobos.w.open.de (Cosmic Vagabond) Date: Thu, 28 May 92 22:01:20 GMT Meredith quotes Kevin: > going to start rehearsing for the tour in the fall. Which reminds me of a footnote by Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman (from "Good Omens, The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch"), where they describe what a "firelighter" is: Note for Americans and other city-dwelling life-forms: the rural British, having eschewed central heating as being far too complicated and in any case weakening moral fibre, prefer a system of piling small pieces of wood and lumps of coal, topped by large, wet logs (apparently made of asbestos), into small, smouldering heaps, known as "there's nothing like a roaring open fire is there?" Since none of these ingredients are inclined to burn, underneath all this they apply a small, rectangular, waxy white lump, which burns cheerfully until the weight of the fire puts it out. This is a firelighter. Chrissy asked: > yet, which CD should I get? If any/all of you had to pick > the CD to play for someone that is a "definitive" Happy I'd also suggest _Warpaint_. I still like this album the most, although the others contain many a great song as well. Mentioning _The Dreaming_ is correct. It is my favourite KaTe-album, but if I want to play some KaTe for someone who hasn't heard of her, I would choose _Hounds of Love_. > Danke schoen, > --chrissy Bitte sehr, Klaus. :) footah: > unexpected european ectogether, featuring the unexpected Alan Ezust, Shouldn't that be ectogather? :) > we watched a fair number of videos (and wedged staaaaaar trek in > between) -- highlights for me were Sarah MchL's "path of thorns" and Watching star trek seems to be a prerequisite for a ecto party. Just like watching KaTe. Not only during the european ectog?ther, but also while Alan was here we saw a bit of it. :) Unlike the current weather situation in Chicago, it stayed beautiful over here. For nearly 2 weeks now! The satelite pictures show central europe without any clouds, which seem to gather in the mediteranean and scandinavian area. Last monday, Alan and I visited Germanys biggest record store, which is located in Cologne. I've never been in there before and boy, I was impressed. I found many discs I've been looking for for months, and the pile of CDs Alan brought to the cash box was also impressive. In fact we had more CDs than we could pay for (as they don't accept credit cards), but luckily they accepted an eurocheck. I think, I'll see Cologne more often in the future. It looks like this September will be _the_ month for ectogethers. The first week at MagiCon in Florida, next weekend in or around Boston, followed by Chicago. I wonder if we will see something of the country, or just various fuzzy blue drinks. :) Until next week, as we are going to Bruegge (Belgium) for the weekend. My name is Dirk Kastens and I live in Osnabrueck, Germany. I'm a geography student and I'm employed at university, so that I have access to the net. My favorite female vocalists (beside Kate Bush and Tori Amos) are: Joni Mitchell, Toni Childs, Rickie Lee Jones, Sarah McLachlan, Judy Tzuke, Joan Armatrading, Alice, Anna Domino, just to mention a few. But I'm very open-minded to any kind of music (electronic, heavy rock, ethno, etc.). I joined gaffa and really-deep-thoughts for a few weeks, when Klaus told me about Ecto and Happy Rhodes and he sent me a cassette with his favorite Happy songs (thank you, Klaus!). When I heard Happy's music for the first time I was surprised about the great range of her voice. Her high, mid- range and low voice seems to belong to different vocalists and her music is difficult to classify. It reminds me of Kate Bush, Toni Childs, and Anna Domino. The music is not of an artistic perfection (like Joni Mitchell) but it is very athmospheric and gloomy. I hope to hear more of her music, soon. -- Dirk --------------------------------------------------------------- + Children laugh, children cry + They're the ones who will survive + Will they know what we've sold + Nature's gift we've turned for gold -- Toni Childs --------------------------------------------------------------- ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
