The Happy Rhodes Encyclopedia - Status Janie Mitchell ======================================================================== From: Alain.Lachapelle@167-290-33.hexacom.com (Alain Lachapelle) Date: 28 Jul 94 22:35:51 -0500 Subject: Planned Happy article in Cyclone Bonjour all, I need info on Happy Rhodes that could be relevant in an article introducing her to a crowd of progressive rock music amateurs. I'm writing an article for Cyclone, a Quebecois (Canadian French if you like) glossy magazine on progressive rock. Since I'm convinced Happy could have a bunch of fans here in Quebec I'm pushing this article. Her being but a 4-hour drive away from Montreal could also open an eventual possibility of a live concert here (dreaming?) I recently read Vickie's FAQ, so that gives something. I, of course, have all the albums up to Equipoise. Since the next Cyclone will be in a few months, I'll, by then, have "Rhodesongs" and "Building the Colossus". What I'm looking for is, I dunno, inspirations some of you may have regarding the introduction of her music to people with rather an open-minded attitude amongst which, undoublty, we can find Kate Bush fans also. Pointers, suggestions, anecdotes, etc... I'll mention the Ecto mailing list in the article. (Perhaps this will call for an internet primer regarding progressive rock info sources also). Since articles in French can be very lyrical, I'd like to adopt a way of writing that would reflect her music most. French is a very literary language and I'll be looking for a balance in the writing style that would swing poetically on the edge of being easy to access while retaining the color of Happy's music. Something to convey in a downright manner: "hey you, you gotta hear what this lady does." But said in a colorful and inspirational manner, of course . Ever since I've first listened to "Warpaint" on a tape given to me by friend Tracy Barber of Albany (with whom I saw Mitch Elrod live last year in Troy - he's listed in the credits of the album) I knew Happy would strike a chord somewhere in the hearts of the people here. Now is one chance of making her known. Quebec has a strong history of being progressive rock lovers. British bands such as Gentle Giant would play here, years after years, in front of audiences of 15,000+ when elsewhere in the world they would play ridiculously small venues, for instance (apart from Italy where they were quite popular too). I will also include one Happy song in a progressive rock tape I'll be sending to two promenient journalists in Montreal in the near future. Makes me think, if you'd have to send only but one Happy song which one would you send? Not obvious, eh? I thought of "Out Like A Lamb" from "Equipoise" on the basis that it got... - well, I may try to explain something while in the end it's purely instinctive. Cheers (and hoping to hear from some of you guys and gals), Alain al@hexacom.com Now Playing: "Si tu bene valeas ego bene valeo" - Deus ex Machina ================================================================= ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 29 Jul 94 1:50:26 EDT From: WretchAwry Subject: Talked to Happy Ohboyo, where do I start? I talked to Happy for quite a while tonight, and she passed along large amounts of tidbits. First, the album is completely finished, recorded, mixed, mastered, and is now in production. Street date is August 31, 1994. Here's the track listing of the new album: Building The Colossus 1) Hold Me 2) Just Like Tivoli 3) Dying 4) Collective Heart 5) Building The Colossus 6) Omar 7) Pride 8) You Never Told Me 9) If I Ever See The Girl Again 10) Down, Down 11) Big Dreams, Big Life 12) Glory Tidbit list: The CD runs at just over 58 minutes. Recorded at Cathedral Sound Studios. Mixed at Bearsville Studios. Mastered by Dr. Toby Mountain Jerry Marotta plays drums on tracks 2, 4 and 8. David Torn plays guitar on tracks 1, 4, 7 and 10. Monica Wilson plays cello on track 11. There are no other backup singers on the album, Happy does all the singing. The show World Cafe will be premiering the album August 18 (date subject to change) and Happy is going to be interviewed (by phone) for that show this coming Tuesday. Happy wouldn't give too many details about the cover, but said for Ectophiles to look closely at it...something's in there for you. :) Happy's favorite songs are "Hold Me," "Just Like Tivoli," "Down, Down" and "Glory." Especially "Down, Down." Happy wrote songs that didn't make it to the recording stage, but didn't record any which didn't make it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Happy is *NOT* playing the Woodstock II festival. I was on the phone with her when she got the phone call saying that the organizers had nixed her. The Joyous Lake show is still on, though Happy wants people to be aware that she will only be playing about an hour, and probably won't hit the stage until midnight. She'll be one of 3 acts playing that night. The Joyous Lake show will consist of Happy on vocals (of course) and guitar, Kevin Bartlett on keyboards, Martha Waterman on keyboards, Dave Sepowski on guitar, Peter Sheehan on drums, and Matthew Guarnere on backup vocals. Kelly Bird fans: Kelly couldn't sing backup because she's singing lead in a musical in Albany. Happy couldn't remember the name of it, but it's playing in Washington Park in Albany until the 13th of August. The only other "set in stone" gig at this point is still the YesFest. It's a Yes fan convention, to be held at the Manhattan Center in New York City on September 9. Happy will perform a Yes medly and one of two of her original songs from the new album. For more info about the convention, write: Wonderous Stories 320 E. 58th St., Apt. 5C New York, New York 10028 (though I bet we can get some info on the net too, I just don't know where to look. I don't think it's quite like this. No additional memories need to be generated, just the feeling of deja-vu. The feeling that there are memories is an illusion. There are no additional memories, just like there are no bent lines when you're experiencing an optical illusion where straight lines seem bent. Of course, this is only partially true, namely when we consider the phenomena from some "objective" viewpoint. Seen from the subjective viewpoint of the person experiencing them, the illusory things really exist, in approximately the same way as a large memory really exists for a program running in a virtual memory environment. To exploit the computer analogy even further, one could think of a deja-vu experience as the result of two different pointers pointing to the same data. No copying of memory is involved. One of the definitions that parapsychologists use to define deja vu is: a sudden feeling of familiarity, not a reaccurance of an actual event in time... Any sort of actual event with not only sight, but sound, smell, touch, etc. is considered precognitive no matter how small of a space in time it covers, because it is not a simple recollection.... Her acoustic-oriented, airy, folk-pop tunes ("For me it epitomizes that time of my life where I was listening to a lot of Kate Bush, a lot of Enya") aren't tremendously radio-ready. Even so, the wistfull first single, "Gentleman Who Fell," did well with stations of the "adult alternative" ilk, as well as garnering play on alternative rockers such as L.A.'s KROQ. Milla (pronounced MEE-la; she recently stopped using her last name, Jovovich) emigrated to America from Russia with her parents at age 5, and her modeling career took off just a few years later. ... ALthough she was signed by SBK Records on the basis of an original demo she cut at age 12, she was soon shuffled off to sing along with tracks laid down by producerw who saw her as a potential looker out of whom they might be able to squeeze a couple quick European hits. She initially complied, then balked, defiantly insisting on recording her own material. The impasse was resolved in her favor; SBK eventually allowed its headstrong teen creative control, and those embarrassing early sessions never saw the light of day. Sky Cries Mary is a band out of Seattle, but abwsolutely nothing like the 'Seattle sound' (tm). Very interesting. And the last is my absolute favorite of the bunch. Has anyone heard of her? At times, the style is like Sade, other times it's a little Celtish. She has a great voice with a large range. And she uses an all-cardboard CD package. Well, I like it despite that. :) Meredith, do you know anything about her? Well, I got an announcement in the mail the other day that it has just been released on cd. Apparently it's newly remastered, and there's a new track on the disc. _Psalm & Squall_ is something I picked up purely on spec. I was ordering from Ladyslipper's catalog and read their description of the disc. They compared her to Jane Siberry (which I can see a little bit in some songs). Anyway, since I tend to listen to cds at home and only have a tape machine at work, I took it there right after receiving it and I never really *listened* to it but played it several times and suddenly it was totally stuck in my mind and I had to listen to it obsessively. I shared it with Mike Peskura, who says it passed his TIU! (Turn It Up!) test. When I sent my message to ecto I said that I thought I'd discovered another apostle, and I still think so. Janie Mitchell writes songs with a lot of range, both emotionally and in the sound she puts out--she can do both psalms and squalls, truly. The announcement includes two reviews: "From Shropshire, Janie Mitchell's songs are intensely personal, but far from inward looking. She calls on an immense palette of melodic and structural devices to provide the backdrop for, broadly speaking, spiritual lyrics: the arrangements contain anything but hackneyed effects, creating a heady atmophere. The overall tone is dark, but this is not a solemn affair--on the contrary, it is quite rewarding and positive." _Folk Roots_ (London, England). "Now this is a surprise--A British singer-songwriter putting together a gem of a debut that runs the gamut stylistically from Enyaesque atmosphere, to moody neo-folk, to pop, with some clever lyrics adapted from Shakespeare, Wordsworth, and Ovid, recorded not in Jolly Olde in but Portland, Oregon. Janie Mitchell's flexible voice resembles Kate Bush one minute ("Renascence" or "Takilma Nic") and Dead Can Dance (if they sang intelligible English lyrics) the next. She gets a lot of good input from multi-instrumentalist Daniel Crommie (synths, drum programming, flute, and penny whistle). From the Welsh border to Portland, Oregon--hats off to New Weave Records for a real discovery." _Dirty Linen_ (Baltimore, Maryland) Before I ever knew about the cd issue, I asked Doug to include one of her songs, "Sophisticate," on the HBP--I hope some of you will give it a listen there. Anyway, I highly recommend this disc. It's available from Ladyslipper (1-800-634-6044) and through New Weave Records, P.O. Box 17553, Portland, OR 97217, USA. Anyway, here's more from the announcement: "Hailing from Shropshire, England, Janie brings her folk music heritage of wild Welsh borders to Portland, Oregon's progressive Living Room Studio. "Drawing upon influences of medieval church music and traditional acoustic aires of remote places, _Psalm and Squall_ recreates the ambient, timeless quality of ancient melodies couple with new dimensions of electronic synthesized sound and choral harmony. "At the heart of _Psalm and Squall_'s varied instrumentation and style is a voice of emotional power and remarkable range. Searing blusey wails and unusual intonation and trills display Celtic and Eastern European influences. "The lyrical content of _Psalm and Squall_ concentrates on Janie's relationship to landscape and its people: feelings of displacement and retrospective observations of home while travelling and performing in foreign settings. "Whilst honouring Romantic literary sources ("The World is Too Much With Us"), Janie's lyrics offer an unsentimental, sharp awarenes of environmental change ("Wy'east and the Diamond Cutters"; "A Bed of One's Own") and social types ("Sophsticate"; "Takilma Nic"). "_Psalm and Squall_ poetically explores the wilderness of the isolated self ("Renascence"; "Sappira"), the tempests and desperations of human love ("Black Nights and White Squalls"). "Stormy lyrics and angelic tones complete this original first offering of Janie Mitchell, singer-songwriter." Anyway, as you may have guessed, I am still really impressed with this recording and have pretty much worn my tape out. I'm sending a check for the disc in tomorrow's mail. This is a good one, folks, really. Forgive the length, but I think the disc is worth it. --Neile neile@u.washington.edu ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
