My name is Chris, I'm 16, and I live in New Jersey. You may have seen me on the #ecto channel (ColinZeal). I really like Happy, Sarah, Kirsty MacColl, Aimee Mann, Enya, Tori, Suzanne Vega, and a host of other artists that don't have much to do with ecto, besides being brilliant or strange. Among the most notable are Matt Johnson (The The), Richard Barone, Dada, Morphine, Paul Simon, to name just a few. I found out about Happy when I was browsing through the web almost a year ago... someone had linked one of the Rutgers home pages to the ecto archive site. I picked up Rhodesongs a few weeks later and loved it. I've added Rhodes I and Equipoise to my collection, and someday (when I get some money) I hope to have the whole collection. Q: Is anyone farmiliar with Ani DiFranco or Botrundle(sp)? The former was recommended to me, and the latter did some live stuff on a local radio station today. Sounded pretty interesting. All I know about her is that she's from New York and she's signed on some medium-sized label (though she mentioned some connection with Columbia). She said Tower records carries her album, but we don't have any near us, so I want to know if it's worth going out of my way to find. Also, I was kind of wondering about the backround behind the song "Closer" from Equipoise. Hits pretty hard... I really like Ecto and I've found out about a lot of neat music here; keep the reviews comming! And re: setting up an ecto web page, it should definately be done. And we can all help by asking the folks that run popular web pages to add it to their list of "other interesting links". Still lacking an interesting signoff, Chris. ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 25 Jul 1994 00:47:56 -0400 (EDT) From: Michael K Curry Subject: Mazzy Star (and a VH1 rant) Hi all, I taped "What's New On VH1" this past Thursday (it seems to be the only place I can see Milla's "Gentleman Who Fell" video, and until recently I could count on catching Tori's "Cornflake Girl" as well) and had a question about a video I saw. Unfortunately VH1 seems to have decided that Milla's video isn't new anymore, but they played a video by Mazzy Star... the name of which I've forgotten. So my question is: Does anyone have any comments about Mazzy Star? I wasn't blown away by the video, but I was a little intrigued. I'll take a moment here to air a big complaint I have about VH1. For a while they showed an "Inside Music" about Tori Amos regularly, but it was almost impossible to see her "Cornflake Girl" video. Recently they've been showing an "Inside Music" segment about Milla, but her video is also nearly impossible to see. It seems rather stupid to me for VH1 to get their viewers interested in an artist by doing an "Inside Music" about them, and then not show a video by that artist on a regular basis. :P Mike *+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+* | Michael Curry / mcurry@world.std.com / CIS: 70372,3563 | |+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++| | Reaching-From-Nowhere -- The Milla Mailing List | | reaching-from-nowhere-request@world.std.com | *+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+* ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 25 Jul 1994 00:48:27 -0400 (EDT) From: Michael K Curry Subject: Closed roads Bob related: > To those of you who are going to attempt Joyous Lake: Woodstock > will probably close its roads late Thursday. Hmmm... closed roads would certainly make things interesting. :) I suppose getting to Joyous Lake will depend on just which roads they decide to close... I've no doubt they'll shut down at least part of Main St. Just where is Joyous Lake anyway? I've been to Woodstock once (about 3 weeks ago to see Milla) so I'm not that familiar with the area. By force of will my lungs are filled A: 10,000 Maniacs (10) T: Like the Weather (9) 3. New car, caviar, four star daydream, Think I'll buy me a football team A: Pink Floyd (14) T: Money (14) 4. Tin soldiers and Nixon coming We're finally on our own A: Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (14) T: Ohio (17) This is the lyric that I had replaced and then put back. I originally thought that the title was "Four Dead in Ohio", putting it in the Numbers Group (see below). I realized later that it was just "Ohio", so I pulled it and replaced it with "99 Red Balloons". But then I realized that I was missing a member of the U.S. Locales group, so I put it back in. Didja follow all that? :) 5. There ain't nothin' in the world like a big-eyed girl Make me act so funny, make me spend my money A: The Big Bopper (14) T: Chantilly Lace (13) 6. I want a little bit I want a piece of it I think he's losing it I want to watch it come down A: Nine Inch Nails (4) T: March of the Pigs (4) Fairly popular "alternative" song from a couple months ago. 7. Dreamed I was an Eskimo Frozen wind began to blow Under my boots and around my toes It was a hundred degrees below zero A: Frank Zappa (8) T: Don't Eat The Yellow Snow (7) A very funny song, and a minor hit in 1973. I was pretty generous with guesses at the title (some of the responses were "Don't Eat That Yellow Snow", "Don't Eat Yellow Snow", "Don't You Eat That Yellow Snow", etc.. I didn't accept one person's guess, "Don't Eat Snow Where the Huskies Go") 13. Now it is 1984 Knock knock at your front door It's the suede denim secret police They have come for your uncool niece A: Dead Kennedys (5) T: California Ueber Alles (5) One person guessed "Jello Biafra". Close, but no cigar. 14. You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice If you choose not to decide you still have made a choice A: Rush (12) T: Freewill (12) 15. Our little group has always been And always will until the end A: Nirvana (9) T: Smells Like Teen Spirit (9) A very popular song from 1992. I'm not surprised that not many people got this one, since Kurt Cobain's diction wasn't the best (probably intentionally). 16. It's that little souvenir Of a colorful year That makes me smile inside A: The Sundays (11) T: Here's Where The Story Ends (10) On the other hand, I *am* surprised how many people got this one, since I didn't think The Sundays were well-known outside the "alternative" crowd (at least not in the US). 17. And she can see no reasons Because there are no reasons What reason do you need to die? A: The Boomtown Rats (14) T: I Don't Like Mondays (15) A modern classic. "Bob Geldof" was not acceptable. 18. When I wake up, I know I'm gonna be I'm gonna be the man who wakes up next to you A: The Proclaimers (15) T: I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) (6) I was a real stickler for the title on this one. A lot of people had the number of miles wrong (it varied between 100 and 1000). "500 Miles" by itself wasn't acceptable, because that's just the subtitle (unless it's been renamed "500 Miles (I'm Gonna Be)") 19. People dancin', people laughin' A man selling ice cream, Singing Italian songs A: Chicago (12) T: Saturday in the Park (12) 20. Goodbye my love, maybe for forever, Goodbye my love, the tide waits for me A: Alan Parsons Project (6) T: Time (4) 21. While the sun is bright Or in the darkest night No one knows She comes and goes A: Rolling Stones (11) T: Ruby Tuesday (11) 22. If I had a box just for wishes And dreams that will never come true The box would be empty except for the memories Of how they were answered by you A: Jim Croce (14) T: Time in a Bottle (14) 23. Baby, my ship is capsizin' I feel it risin' and risin' A: Marvin Gaye (2) T: Sexual Healing (2) Congrats to Phil Fernandez and The Tampa Quizzers for being the only one to get this right. 24. It's getting late have you seen my mates Ma tell me when the boys get here It's seven o'clock and I want to rock Want to get a belly full of beer A: Elton John (16) T: Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting (16) 25. You got a hubcap diamond star halo A: T. Rex (13) T: Bang a Gong (Get It On) (11) "Get It On" wasn't sufficient for the title. To everyone's credit, no one guessed Power Station for the artist. 26. These are the days of the empty hand Oh you hold on to what you can And charity is a coat you wear twice a year A: George Michael (6) T: Praying for Time (4) There were a couple near-misses on the title for this song, "Playing for Time" and "Waiting for Time". 27. One - you lock the target Two - you bait the line Three - you slowly spread the net And four - you catch the man A: Front 242 (6) T: Headhunter (6) 28. "This is it, boys, this is war." A: Nena (6) T: 99 Red Balloons (6) ("99 Luftballons" also acceptable) Where is she now? PART II - GROUPINGS =================== Group 1 - "Time" ---------------- The Time, "The Bird" Peter Gabriel, "Big Time" Alan Parsons Project, "Time" Jim Croce, "Time in a Bottle" George Michael, "Praying for Time" Group 2 - U.S. places (I accepted "places" or variants thereof) --------------------- CSNY, "Ohio" Boston, "Don't Look Back" Kansas, "Dust In The Wind" Chicago, "Saturday In The Park" Dead Kennedys, "California Ueber Alles" Two respondents also listed "Chantilly Lace" under this category. I looked it up, and there is a Chantilly in Virginia, so I gave credit for it. Group 3 - days of the week -------------------------- The Sundays, "Here's Where The Story Ends" The Boomtown Rats, "I Don't Like Mondays" Chicago, "Saturday In The Park" Rolling Stones, "Ruby Tuesday" Elton John, "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" The most-commonly identified group. Group 4 - Numbers ----------------- 10,000 Maniacs, "Like The Weather" Prince, "1999" The Proclaimers, "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" Front 242, "Headhunter" Nena, "99 Red Balloons" The Dutch Officials also included Nine Inch Nails, which I completely missed when I was putting the quiz together. They got credit. Group 5 - Artists or Lead Singers Who Died Violent Deaths --------------------------------------------------------- Big Bopper, "Chantilly Lace" (plane crash) Nirvana (Kurt Cobain), "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (gunshot suicide) Jim Croce, "Time in a Bottle" (plane crash) Marvin Gaye, "Sexual Healing" (shot by his father) T. Rex (Mark Bolan), "Bang a Gong (Get It On)" (car crash) I accepted "dead guys" or variants. No one actually pegged "violent deaths", but one tried "deaths from vehicle crashes," which almost works. Note that Rolling Stones doesn't qualify because Brian Jones wasn't a lead singer. and now the grouping that no one got.... Group 6 - Songs With Odd Meters ------------------------------- Pink Floyd, "Money" (7/4) Nine Inch Nails, "March of the Pigs" (varies between 7/8 and 4/4) Yes, "Roundabout" (partly in 7/4, the "da da da da daaaaaa daaa da!" part) Rush, "Freewill" (partly in 5/4, and 7/4 I think) Frank Zappa, "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow" (7/4) Yeah, pretty tough, in retrospect *too* tough, but I wanted to see if anyone would get it. The closest anyone came was "70's Progressive Rock". The scoring: 5 points for figuring out a grouping motif, one point each for correct constituents of that group. Even if you didn't get the artist and title right for the constituent, if you knew it belonged to that grouping then you got credit. For example, everyone who said that the Proclaimers song (no matter how many miles they had) was in the "numbers" group got credit. I got introduced to her through my fiance, who saw a show up in Seattle with one of her friends. I got a couple dubs from her and have been flipping (flip... flip... flip) ever since. Apparently she has one of the most powerful stage prescences in the business - unfourtunately I haven't been able to check it out firsthand yet. Hmmm.. let me try to describe her music. Most of it is her playing the guitar and singing, without a lot of backup (although I might be wrong, since that's all I tend to notice). It was described to me as happy feminist music.. she does a lot of social commentary, but it's really energetic stuff. She also does a fair number of bisexual/lesbian songs too. I would say if you're a more conservative type of person a lot of the songs might rub you the wrong way, but if not she comes with my definite reccomendation. Lets see... she's on an independent label called righteous babe records (I think) and I can get you more info if you want. For a first time tho, I'd say get a dub from the friend who mentioned her, and after that think about getting more. The two that I listen to are "Puddle Dive" and "Imperfectly". Good luck! Does anyone know if there's a precedent for this? After all, if you're suing somebody, then you're automatically making derogatory statements. Of course, you have to prove that they are false to win a judgment for libel. And since we all know that Ticketmaster really is scum, and truth is an absolute defense, I say we win. (Alright, Ticketmaster, I'm ready to take you on.) I'm happy to say that here in Albuquerque, there is an alternative to Ticketscum. Dillard's handles all of the State Fair tickets. I don't know what their handling fees are, but I doubt they're as bad as Ticketscum. Unfortunately, the event determines the broker. They aren't both selling Tori tickets, for example. I was more interested in the friend than Karla so I went. Surprise: Karla is ecto-fodder! She fits the genre: personal, meaningful lyrics, writes her own words and music, has a very good voice, all the rest! She does include songs that are a tad too mainstream pop for my taste, but about half the songs were extremely good. I am going to start hunting up a few records of hers, but I fear that I will have to make my own best-of tapes, to delete the country-pop stuff I did not like so much. But it is interesting how I missed her all this time. Then, I did not discover KaTe until 1985, either. Also on the bill was Nicolette Larson, who had a hit with Gonna Take A Lotta Love a long time ago, doing mostly other people's material. She was more entertaining when she talked between songs. Good sense of humor, and interesting to listen to. She is sort of out of the loop these days; her new album is a collection of songs to play for babies. The things one finds when one ventures, however briefly, into the mainstream. I also posted this on alt.music.ecto, which I discovered I can subscribe to via the Fidonet/Usenet dog door thus avoiding having to shamble about on the AOL gateway. Maybe that is why Vickie dropped off of this list; so she can put more effort into growing a.m.e. Which of course begs the question, what should us Ectophiles do about a.m.e.? Double our online time by giving full attention to both? Ignore it as a place for non-list people to hang out? Since I can get it through the fido Point program I will be getting both for a while, but I think I would rather stay here if I had to choose.
