Stuart's bad experience with Ticketslime is only one of many, believe me. I've already mentioned here that we had tickets to see Milla in New York a couple weeks ago, but when we got there the show had been cancelled. I only just this morning got around to calling Ticketslime to see about a refund, and was rudely informed by someone in "Customer Service" that since the cruise went out anyway (sans Milla) the event was not cancelled, and therefore I am not entitled to my money back. I managed to keep my cool long enough to get the name and address of the New York area "customer service" manager, and then proceeded to write him a short, incredibly nice letter (considering) explaining the situation, mentioning the fact that I have already arranged for American Express to place a stop payment on that charge, and assuring him that I'm sure he will see that my account is credited in full in a most expedient manner. Now let's see what happens. I think it's incredibly telling that when I called AmEx to see about placing a hold on payment of that charge, I had barely gotten the first syllable out when the woman on the other end sighed, "Ticketmaster, right? Another one. Okay, here's what you do..." I know there are class action suits against Ticketslime pending in Los Angeles and Miami, but does anyone know of any action in New York? What's involved in filing a class action suit, anyway? Who gets sacked with the legal fees? I would gladly join any group involved in nailing this goddamned slimy, incompetent, monopolizing corporation to the wall. If they won't give me my money back (all service charges included, naturally), I will take legal action, no question. For now, though, I'm just boycotting Ticketslime. I have friends in New York and other places nearby who are willing to stop by a box office and pick tickets up for me. But after enduring service charges which only barely refrain from crossing the border into larceny, getting the worst seats in the house to see Sarah in Town Hall when I was assured that they were nowhere near the speakers, and now this, I'm done. That's it. And I hope to take Ticketslime down with me. :P :P :P Sorry - just had to get that out. Seriously, though -- New York area 'philes, if there were to be some sort of legal action against Ticketslime arranged in our area, would you be interested in joining in? Let me know... Meredith meth@delphi.com ======================================================================== Date: 22 Jul 94 13:49:17 EDT From: Mike Mendelson Subject: Michael Smith & Ann Hill Michael Smith, raised in NJ and based in Chicago, is a rarely gifted songwriter. What sets him apart from some other songwriters is his unpredictability. I consider this a highly alluring quality among songs. The lyric starts off and leads you in one direction, but then it twists and you realize you were way off. Kate Bush does this musically all the time... she is one of the best, if not *the* best at that. Michael Smith is comparably one of the best writers in the folk world. There are no cliches in his songs, anywhere. The true art of Smith, however, is in the combination of his writing with his playing. Deliberate, easy to listen to, immediately mood- setting, he is a brilliant technician. This proves that you don't need long skinny fingers to play guitar well. Smith has carved such a unique creative niche for his style that he is hardly known. Like Jonathan Richman, he has been around for a long, long time, (Smith has been around longer than JR), tours around (Smith tours less) and plays to small crowds, and thankfully records some records. But Smith takes hold of an audience (like JR) *effortlessly*. His deep baritone voice can be infectiously smooth, yet he is gravelly to watch. I like to think of him as the Jonathan Winters of the folk world -- older, wiser, more serious, and more funny than most of his piers. He doesn't need to do very much to engage an audience. The concert I attended last night in Chicago went on for over 3 hours, if you count the longish break between sets. But the time passed so smoothly that I was shocked to see it was almost 1am when I finally got home. Don't miss this man if he ever comes to your town. He will, by the way, be taking his play (about he and his sisters) to San Francisco in the fall. -mjm ======================================================================== Date: 22 Jul 94 14:51:20 EDT From: Mike Mendelson Subject: american pie lyrics wanted If you get this message after 4pm Central Time on Friday 7/22, ignore it, I'll be gone! Clarke looked odd merely because of the poor frame rate and resolution of current videophones. Most of the scientist types (including Cliff "Too Much Coffee Man" Stoll) were OK on their own, although the interviewers asked a lot of inane questions. It sort of looked to me like someone made the decision that the show would be more appealing if it avoided the hard science and details, and had a bunch of segments on social phenomena only peripherally related to the impact event. I thought they dumbed it down to the point of uselessness. Thanks for clearing up that one for me. I just knew she had to have gotten her inspiration there. It's just marvelous. In fact, when Tori comes to Albuquerque for her concert, I hope she returns to Taos (it's only 2 1/2 hours away) and gets recharged. I'm thinking of requesting an interview with her for the Tribune, and I'd like to interview her in Taos if possible. If not, I want to take her to a local pueblo. I just think we'd see a different side of Tori in that context. For those who don't know, Tori is doing a concert in Albuquerque on the 18th of August. Yes, I've been busy, *very* busy in fact, combined with hardware problems it was difficult to keep up reading ecto. I'll spare you of a full report of the activities of those last weeks, most of them were family anyway, but there were a couple music/ecto related events. I'll keep it short. Way back in May we had a great time meeting up with a large number of ectophiles and love-hounds in Cambridge and London. It was great to see many of you again and meet some of you for the first time. Unfortunately time was much too short. It was followed by another fine example of ectosynchronicity. One of the following weekends Claudia was in Paris and on the stairs of Montmatre she met one of the guys who was in Cambridge and London. It's a pity, but we can't remember his name. I don't think he's an ectophile. Speak up if you are. :) Another weekend we visited Ilka & Pete in Darmstadt. This time without a concert, but we visited the medieval market in the city of Frankfurt (part of the celebration of their 1200 anniversary) which was very nice as well. Concerts? Hmm, we've seen Laurie Anderson again, reading from her Nerve Bible, followed by a question & answer session. It seems to me that these Q&A sessions become more and more popular. As a special guest she had Lou Reed playing guitar for her on one song. Excellent show! Has the book Nerve Bible been released by now? We'd love to get a copy it. There has been the Electric Music Festival, a promo tour of some electric wave band from some record label. Nothing spectacular; I only remember Psyche (Canada) and Invisible Limits (Germany). Once again we saw Bobo In White Wooden Houses, just on a small tour this time. The main reason for these few gig was probably that they wanted to give their new guitar player some practice with the band as Heise left them. In fact they replaced him by two guys but we still missed him. :) We've also been to a SF convention again; the local one in Duesseldorf, which is still one of the best of Germany, and it was very interesting to meet George Alec Effinger. Hey, someone interested in a WorldCon in Duesseldorf in 2003? :) New music? I finally got my copy of the Milla CD and although I do like it, it didn't leave a big impression. I've listened much more to other new aquisitions like Gogh Van Go s/t album or the new Youssou N'Dour album. Alright, that's a brief recap of the most interesting events of the last weeks. I'll be back in 3 months. ;) Cheers, Klaus ___________________________________________________________ . * | "Tell me all the plans you have for the great beyond. | _ . * .* . | Will you be physical again, or be a cosmic vagabond." | (_) . | --- Happy Rhodes --- | . . o | Klaus "cosmic vagabond" Kluge klaus@inphobos.wupper.de | <== ======================================================================== From: klaus@inphobos.wupper.de Date: Sun, 24 Jul 1994 12:55:17 CET-1 Subject: a small Klaus (yes, it's this time of the year again) To my own surprise I've catched up with reading ecto. Hi all.. I hope everyone is having a good summer. It certainly is a hot and humid one here (Virginia). Does anybody else have DMX? For those of you who aren't familiar with it, it's like cable for your stereo instead of your TV. Anyway, I am pleasantly surprised at all the different "ecto-type" artists that have been getting airplay. I mainly listen to the Alternative, and Folk/Rock channels. For those who are interested, here is a list of artists/songs I've heard getting airplay (nationwide!) in the past few weeks: ---Kate Bush (Running Up That Hill, Wuthering Heights [new vocal]) ---Happy Rhodes (Ashes to Ashes, and the acoustic versions of both In Hiding and Save Our Souls!) ---Jane Siberry (Bound By The Beauty) ---Sarah McLachlan (Vox,Drawn To The Rhythm,Possession) ---Loreena McKennitt (The Bonny Swans) ---Heidi Berry (The Moon and the Sun) ---Toni Childs (Hush, I Met A Man) ---Mae Moore (Bohemia, Arrow) ---Over The Rhine (Jacksie, Circle of Quiet) ---Victoria Williams (Summer of Drugs) also Bettie Serveert, Kristin Hersh, Everything But The Girl, Iris Dement, Matraca Berg, Rebecca Pidgeon, and October Project. It's great to hear this stuff getting played.. I got Everything But The Girl's new album yesterday. I like it quite a bit. The only slightly negative thing I would say about it is that it's only 36 or so minutes long. But it has some really nice songs on it, so I do recommend it. I was kind of depressed when I left the music store, because there were SO MANY CD's that I wanted to get, but couldn't!!!!! In case anyone is interested, there is a new volume of the "Just Say Yes" CD series out. It's called "Just Say Roe", and it includes brand new songs from Kristin Hersh and Danielle Dax(!!!) that were recorded especially for this album! I didn't buy the CD myself, but I was able to listen to both of those songs while I was in the store. Neither song struck me as being wonderful, but they are certainly good and worth having. Danielle's song (can't remember the title) is rock-edged like "The Id Parade" or "Cat-House", and has a rather dark feel to it. This gives me hope that Danielle is working on a new album!
