Fellow Ectophiles: Here's an idea for all of us to find each other: The concerts start at 3:00PM. At 2:50, I will go stand off to the right of the starge area (right as you look at the stage, or left of the performers!). Come to think of it, as I hope to be there sooner, I'll also stand there at 2:30. I'll probably be wearing blue jeans and a blue T shirt. Look for silver hair (and um, a belly) and that's probably me! (As for the belly part, I've just given up drinking alcohol so I bet that starts to go away!) Anyhow, I'll be there at 2:30, and again at 2:50. If anyone thinks it should be earlier or elsewhere, post here and I'll check my mail again around 10:30 tonight, as well as tomorrow morning. Those of you travelling, feel free to call me at (609) 486-9181 if you get lost or need directions. I should be home till 1pm or so. Wayne Palmer, if you're coming down the NJ Tpk. or Rt. 295, call me tonight or tomorrow morning and perhaps we can join up here before we go. Same to Joe Zitt, who'll be coming up from Delaware. Besides my whole family, another family we know is going, so we can make it a caravan. I'll check back later and see if there's any response. Whatever, I'll be by the stage right side at 2:30 and 2:50 tomorrow, perhaps again at 3:50 in case anyone's late! Folks, It has just come to my attention that Vickie Mapes has unsubscribed from this list. I don't know about you, but her departure saddens me a lot. She always had interesting posts, great HappyNews (tm), and often cried on our willing shoulders. I'm at a loss to fully understand her departure. She mentioned something about opposition to alt.music.ecto and a lack of Happy conversation here, but I sensed no flames WRT ame, and there has indeed been talk of Happy and her upcoming album. I guess I don't get it. I don't have any ideas about what to do. I sent her a letter and told her we'd leave the light on for her, but she may mistake us for a Motel 6 now. I'm in the midst of a most un-Ecto bahaviour. I just bought the Who box. It's magnificent. During my adolescence, the Who were _my_ band. Over the years, I've accumulated quite a Who collection, but the band were never properly represented on CD. Other than Tommy and Quadrophenia, most of the CDs are very lacking, sonically. The early stuff was never properly stored, Shel Talmy owns the 1965 masters and won't let go of them for anywhere near a reasonable sum of money (the Who dumped Talmy and, 30 years later, he still hasn't forgiven them) and the masters for Who's Next are just plain worn out. EVERYTHING previously released on the box has been remixed. The early singles sound absolutely wonderful. Even the 1965 stuff, which unfortunately has not been remixed from the original masters due to the abovementioned butthead. The booklet is very comprehensive (I'm taking a break from reading it to write this). All in all, if you were ever a Who fan, buy this box! ________Paul Cohen______________________pmcohen@netaxs.com__________________ Philadelphia, PA __________________ ======================================================================== From: jzitt@ssnet.com (Joseph Zitt) Subject: Re: Penn's Landing tomorrow... After the show I did hear a few people mention that it was just "OK" (!!!). I can not imagine how anyone could say that it was just OK, but different people have different tastes I guess. The crowd as a whole, however, was very appreciative and Sarah seemed really pleased to be getting such a good response. She remarked how she has never played this area before and that she was surprised to see such a good turnout (Virginia is hardly the hub of alternative type music, believe me). It looked to me as though the concert hall was sold out, but I'm not sure.. Anyway, I thought it was wonderful, and I could have sat there all night and listened to her. Her singing was flawless right through to the end of the show, which amazed me. I've already gone on and on about Field of Vision in these pages quite a bit -- they're one of New Haven's better local bands (there are better and certainly more popular bands, like The Swansons, who actually have a record deal but I think they suck, even if the bassist graduated from Wesleyan my frosh year and worships Tribe, but FoV is my favorite group in town). I put a song from their CD _Groceries_ into my HBP contribution, so look for "Destination New Hope" in a tape compilation near you, coming soon! :) Well, in the past couple of days I've seen them play twice, and hung out with them quite a bit. Thursday night they opened for The Godfathers at Toad's Place, and they'd sent me a free ticket, so of course I went. :) It was quite loud and the sound system was having problems, but they put on a really good set nonetheless, and afterwards Paul the drummer bought me a beer. Last evening they played on the New Haven Green with Letters To Cleo, The Flood, and Gravel Pit (also good bands, though I think Letters To Cleo is overrated), and it was the perfect excuse to leave work on time for once. The threatening rain stayed away, they played the same set as the night before but the sound was MUCH better (you could actually hear the vocals, something Toad's Place is notorious for NOT allowing you to do). Afterwards they invited me to join them for a drink, and it was amusing to walk into the local exotic beer joint downtown with them and witness all the people in the bar start going nuts over them. :) They're a great bunch of people. Once the HBP tapes are disseminated, I'll gladly give fellow ectophiles the address to write to order a copy of their CD, or even stop by Cutler's and buy some from their manager herself. They all put out a lot of money to make this disc, and it's going to take them a long time to make the money back. This is a story we ectoids know well, don't we? Since I don't have my radio show any more, the best way to help them is to plug them all I can on the Net and hope I get some results, so forgive my persistence here... Anyway, while talking to Robin, the aforementioned manager who works at Cutler's Records, I found out that Cutler's has started carrying Aural Gratification releases!!!!! I've been going in there and asking for Happy's stuff for a LOMG time, and apparently enough other people have also been doing so that they've finally decided to place an order. Robin said that ever since I told her about Happy she's heard the name popping up everywhere (!). I'll keep you all posted as to how the CDs sell. Incidentally, Robin wants to get copies of Happy's CDs at WNHU, the University of New Haven station she's got a big hand in. Time to send Suzanne a letter, methinks. There are a few shows on that station that would play Happy if given the chance, and those shows are pretty popular, too. We Shall See. (Some of you may remember my tirade last fall about a clueless Cutler's employee who couldn't tell my why Jane Siberry is filed under "Folk" and was a pain in the butt about it... well, I really think that employee was Robin, and I'm VERY glad she doesn't remember that incident... boy, do I feel like the idiot now! She told me last night that Cutler's is getting some computer barcode system that will tell them were to file CDs based on where the labels want them filed... should be interesting to see where things end up then.) Well, I've babbled on long enough. Field of Vision are going to be part of the Ticketslime New Haven Showcase at Toad's Place on July 28, along with a bunch of other Connecticut bands (I think FoV is actually the only band on the docket not from Hartford), for only $1.98. Area 'philes should seriously think about attending -- woj and I will be there for sure! And try calling your local college station to see if they have the CD -- it's called _Groceries_, and has been sent to stations across the country. Joe (listening to October Project again after their *incredible* concert!) ======================================================================== From: jzitt@ssnet.com (Joseph Zitt) Subject: October Project, Sarah, etc, Review Date: Sat, 16 Jul 1994 23:57:02 -0400 (EDT) I just got back from the first day of the Singer/Songwriter concert in Philadelphia. (I don't think I'll return tomorrow, as getting there from Wilmington on Sunday is an expensive pain in the body parts and I'm not familiar with any of the acts.) I got there at about 2:30, and met Wayne Palmer and The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovejoy who were waiting, as planned, at the stage left corner of the stage. I wasn't sure I'd recognize anyone, so I whipped out a big yellow, purple, and red sign I had made for ecto-folk, and they saw me. I stumbled up to where Bob and family were sitting, and tenaciously grabbed a perch there for the show. (Competition for spots was *fierce*.) At 2:50, we saw a mysterious black-garbed figure hovering near the meeting spot, so Bob flashed the sign at him. The mysterious stranger turned out to be Paul Cohen, who joined us intermittently throughout the show. John Flinn, an amiable solo folkie, opened with a 20 minute set of fun songs, including the rousing "Roadkill Cafe'" and "The Duck Song" ("If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck and there's duck poop on your pickup truck you can be sure it's not an armadillo..." or something like that.) After his set, they announced that Sarah would be at the meet-and-greet booth inside the members-only area, so I hightailed it over there, accompanied by the younger Lovejoys (whose names, I just realised, I never found out). I got her autograph on the CD of FTE that I had picked up on the way to the show, and told her "The Internet crowd is here in force. Luke will be pleased", to which she replied "MmHmm". I missed Iris DeMent's set, since I couldn't here her at all from the members-only area. The crowd reaction seemed strong. The next act was Sonia Dada, a powerhouse rock act somewhat reminiscent of the Neville Brothers without the New Orleans angle. They were real performers, with all three singers pulling off wonderful stuff (including some stuff that defied local laws of gravity). Their songs didn't stick with me, but they're a must to see live. After a long stretch Sarah came on. She was ... uhh ... ok, I guess. I could tell that she was thrown by the sound -- while the mix was near-perfect for the rest of the acts, hers was plagued with feedback and muddy sound. Compared to the showmen that preceded and followed her, her performance seemed kind of small and introverted. The only song that clicked for me was a roaring version of "Hold On". She did an abbreviated set and didn't introduce the band (thus no "Use the Force, Luke"), and only did one encore, an nice trio version of "Ice Cream". I guess she was Good Enough, but it wouldn't have interested me in her had I not known her stuff from before. The topper of the show was October Project. I was surprised that they were closing the show, rather than Sarah, but it made sense upon seeing the power of their performance. The band did most of the album, plus some new material, and all of it was riveting and wonderful. Mary Fahl was riveting in her singing and movements, and the rest of the band kept up. I don't know when I've heard harmonies like that like before. Wow. Definitely the best live act I've seen since Peter Gabriel. They were really excited by the crowd, too, saying that this was the best audience they'd had yet. They did three songs as an encore, including a gorgeous cover of "As Tears Go By". An *incredible* set. We went our separate ways after the show, and I ended up in an interesting conversation on the train, with three women who were coming from a Diana Ross show and a couple on their way to see the Grateful Dead. Cross-cultural, to say the least. All in all, a good show. And it's great to have met a few more Ectophiles! ======================================================================== From: jeffw@triple-i.com (Jeff Wasilko) Subject: Re: Happy concert (Aug 11) Date: Sat, 16 Jul 1994 21:12:55 -0700 (PDT) > > jeffw offwers: > > > If you're planning to go, drop me a line. I spoke to Andrea at Joyous Lake, who works for Happy and also at Joyous Lake.... The show is August 11, and Happy will be one of three bands playing that night. 3 bands from the Alternative Woodstock are playing each night (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday). The show will start around 8:00, and tickets should be less than $10 at the door. Andrea said the new CD should be available at the show!!! Hotels in the Woodstock area are booked solid (when I called and asked for a room, all I heard was laughter (-:). So, I booked the un-official ecto-suite at the Courtyard in Poughkeepsie, NY, which is about 45 minutes south of Woodstock. I got a two-room suite, so there will be plenty of crash space. As Joe Zitt mentioned, a caravan is a very good idea. Andrea said parking will be very tight, and they may be closing some or all streets in Woodstock. Andrea gave me some 'back way' directions that should get us in, though. In any event, it would probably be a good idea to meet and drive to the show together.... I've set up a mailing list for concert related annoucements. Mail to concert-request@jane.tiac.net for subscriptions and concert@jane.tiac.net to have your mail go to everyone on the list. Please keep in mind that jane.tiac.net isn't connected all the time, and list additions are done by hand. It might take a while for postings to make it back out, and a bit longer for additions.... When I saw her in Woodstock she was having beer (before and after the show). > She also did 3 new songs. The only one I caught the name of was "Precious > Time" which was written for her mother and is quite lovely. The other two > songs were very good and I look forward to a studio release. I loved the new songs! In Woodstock she did "Strange Behavior", "Precious Time", "Miles Away", "Falling", "Close To You", and one untitled new song. At her show in Boston she said that she expected to have her next album out next summer. :) > Milla sounded...pretty good. Yeah... the smoking kind of worries me too. Hopefully she'll stop. > On the other hand if she'll quit smoking and take some lessons to strengthen > her voice, she could get *much* better. I know she's plannning on voice lessons, and as I said before I hope she'll realize that smoking and a singing career aren't a good mix. Maybe she'll at least quit smoking tobacco. > After the applause died down, Milla noted that they had struggled for > quite some time to come up with a live arrangement of "Gentleman..." > and had finally settled on one which worked well. Unlike the illustrious Messers Lovejoy and Zitt, I decided not to subject my body to the tortures of sardine can living for 6 hours and instead subjected my body to the contortions of trying to get around an area where there was little maneuvering room to get around in. The show was a smashing success and there were people everywhere. It was really only Sarah and October Project that I wanted to see, so I found where the Ectophiles were sitting and then went walking. Over to 3rd Street Jazz and Rock to be exact where I found a Mike Oldfield CD I have been looking some time for - "Amarok", his last for Virgin. Got back just in time to catch Sonia Dada, a good, tight band, but not really my thing. Sarah was great, the mix was lousy. I loved it anyway. Sarah was as good as I expected her to be, but the set was too short. October Project really surprised me, though. I wasn't prepared for how powerful Mary Fahl's vocals are on stage. October Project remind me alot of Renaissance, a band I was very fond of. Mary's stage presence also reminded me of Annie Haslam in the mid-70s, except that her cape twirling is a tad more reminiscent of Stevie Nicks (who I can never think of the same way again after I saw Mark Volman spoofing her in a Flo and Eddie Concert - imagine if you will, Mark Volman, huge belly and all, twirling around in a cape singing "I'm a Welsh Witch!". Anyway... I enjoyed them immensely and the new song they did was very strong. If it is an indication of the direction they are moving in, their next album will be a killer. I really would like to catch Sam Philips tomorrow, but since Dada pulled out of the show, to put it they way Bob Lovejoy put it "I'm all crowded out". ________Paul Cohen______________________pmcohen@netaxs.com__________________ Philadelphia, PA __________________ ======================================================================== Date: 17 Jul 94 06:54:53 EDT From: Marcel Rijs <100276.2176@compuserve.com> Subject: Warpaint CD Hi, Recently I bought the "Warpaint" CD in Amsterdam. (They've got all of Happy's CD's there, including a new edition of "Rhodesongs" with a pink round sticker mentioning Feed the fire and "Acoustic versions of Happy Rhodes classics"... :-) The man behind the counter told me Happy Rhodes really sells well in that store; the CD's have to be ordered again & again on a regular basis. A _lot_ of people seem to be discovering Happy Rhodes thanks to that store. (That man, a Kate Bush fan himself, is also helping: he tells everyone buying anything by Kate to check out Happy :-) Anyway... I bought this Warpaint CD, and it says "For promotional use only not for resale". What does this mean? Is Aural Gratification sending promo items to regular stores...? Replies to my e-mail address please as I am unsubscribing, as some of you have noticed :-} (sorry about that) for my two week holiday. Hello all, I had the pleasure of meeting up with Wayne Palmer, Joe Zitt, and Paul Cohen at yesterday's excellent "Singer-Songwriter Weekend" concert at Penn's Landing, in Philly. John Flynn started off the show with some of his whimsical numbers. He got the crowd going pretty well for an opening act, and considering the heat and humidity, that's a great feat. Iris DeMent was next. What a sweet pure voice! It was like a bell; my wife said it reminded her a little of Loretta Lynn. Her songs were so sharply focussed, great lyrics! She broke a string on her guitar (first time ever, she said) and was utterly charming as she pattered with the audience. Nice set of music. Sonia Dada was up next, and proceeded to electrify the crowd with soulful, energetic music. Excellent musicians, excellent singers. Not exactly ecto fare, but very enjoyable! Sarah McLaughlin was next. What more can I say? The superlatives which have accompanied her tour applied here as well! The band was up to form, the music was great. I'd have liked a better P.A. mix, but all in all it was a wonderful set. Her encore was "Ice Cream", which she'd omitted at her Glenside concert here a few months ago. Wonderful! October Project closed the show and bought the house down. Playing faithfully to their album sound, they enchanted the crowd and made memorable music. They added a bassist (yay!), percussionist, and new drummer to the lineup, and were very impressive. They remarked that this crowd was the most enthusiastic to which they'd ever played, and I'll bet it was! Quite a spectacle! A wonderful concert! I'd go back for today's, but I'm crowded out! It was great to meet the other ectophiles there, and it seems that a great time was had by all! (of course) Date: Mon, 18 Jul 1994 07:19:01 -0500 (CDT) Well maybe not exactly... I've been lurking (I think that's the term for being on the mailist but not posting) for about a month now, inspired by one of (I think) vickie's posts on a.m.e. about ecto, I decided to try it out, and I haven't been disapointed! :) However, I feel kinda strange because I've never heard any of happy's music, and still don't really have a feel for what it is like. So if you'll forgive me for introducing what is undoubtedly a much-too well worn thread, I would like to ask for some description of happy's music. Probably the easiest kind of descriptions for me to deal with would be comparisons (granted that they are never really precisely true, but I'm just looking for a vague idea) between happy and other artists. Other ecto artists that I'm familiar with: Enya (the reason I'm here in the first place :) ), Loreena McKennitt, Sarah (only fte tho), hmmm.. I'm not sure what else, but pick your poison, I've probably heard *something* by them. Oh - I've also got a couple ani difranco albums which I really like muchly. Thanks for your time - any feedback would be greatly apprisciated.
