My ancient monochrome > monitor refreshes, I belive, at 70hz. I can't hear it under ordinary 70 Hz would be the vertical scan frequency. You shouldn't be able to hear that bass note on your screen. 15 kHz or more is the horizontal scan frequency which is LOTS more and therefore LOTS higher. A 70 Hz monochrome monitor (sounds like an Atari ST (RIP)) probably scans faster than 15 kHz. The Atari did scan at a little over 30 kHz. If you're good (very good), you might hear this. > usage, ie the hard drive on, the stereo blasting ("Crystal Orbs," even as I > type! ;-), etc. But if I've only got the monitor and 'puter on, without > any noisy perhipherals, I can hear text scrolling up the screen. WHAT AM I > HEARING?! Wow! ;-) No real idea. Maybe some parts of the screen that change between white and black also change between hot and cool (a little at least), and maybe that causes the noise. Another possibility would be the chip-singing stuff I mentioned when my new PC in the office accesses the upper memory banks. But again, these are total guesses. I know some of y'all are already on the folk_music list, but I thought more than a few of us would be interested in these items from the latest digest. The actual question is never revealed, of course, but the answer is "42." (The TV adap- tation did reveal that the question was some arithmetical operation, which escapes me, but to which 42 was indeed the answer.) I've often wondered wheth- er the architects of the new Chicago ward map were _Hitchhiker_ fans, inasmuch as their handiwork shifts most of the downtown area from the 1st Ward, where it had been for at least 150 years, to the 42nd. And now I've been 42 years old for a whole day, and apparently have lived to tell about it. Such is the effect that these arbitrary benchmarks in the cognitive packaging of time can have on a person's psyche. For me, it coincides with at least a couple of impending shakeups. There now are exactly three months left in the life of this computer account, and my downloading project has only gotten up to the end of October, 1991. In the worst case, I expect to have a net.access of sorts after this one turns into a pumpkin, but it's nowhere near as good as what I'm used to. On the other hand, I've got an interview next week for a very good job opening; there's no unconditional guarantee that I'll get the job of course, but if I do I'll be able to afford good net access on the open market--at the price of less time to read the umpteen mailing lists I'm on. Forrest Gump was right about life being a box of chocolates--you don't know what you're going to get. Yesterday having been Bastille Day as well, I set out to indulge my personal custom of eating French (of sorts) for lunch. Somehow, on the way to Au Bon Pain, I got diverted to the Bennigan's next door by memories of their TV commercials for Monte Cristo sandwiches, which sounded rather appetizing at the time. I tried to salvage some of the reasoning behind my original plan by reasoning that _The Count of Monte Cristo_ may or may not have been written by Alexandre Dumas, who would certainly provide a rational nexus between the name of my lunch and the area of the other hemisphere where the national day was then being celebrated. It then occurred to me that Dumas definitely did write _The Three Musketeers_, one of whose characters--Athos--subsequently had a computer named after him, which was the original home of this mailing list. When I was pondering a choice of beverage with my meal, the waiter suggested Long Island iced tea, advice which I promptly took for want of any better ideas. It subsequently occurred to me that Long Island is in New York State, which is next door both to Quebec (where a substantial amount of French is spoken), and to New Jersey (where Ecto resides). There's something about minimally-considered changes in a game plan that encourages tortured processes of reasoning, in order to rationalize them :-). In a reflective moment, I pondered why I felt such urgency about tying my personal birthday celebration to coincident celebrations in the external world, to which I had no direct, substantive connection. After all, I have no French ancestral background (though my late father did pass through there in '44-45, along with the rest of the 8th Air Force), nor do I even speak the language (though the magic of subtitles has enabled me to enjoy the French cinema as much as the next person). It ocurred to me for the first time that had my birthday been on June 27th--Stonewall Day--whether I'd have marked the occasion by going to a gay bar is a question I find genuinely unanswerable. Or maybe not--while going through the Bennigan's menu, it occurred to me that for about the same money I could have gone to Hooters :-). Apparently someone at the next table was having a birthday as well--he had a small cake laid on him, while a chorus of waiters and waitresses seranaded him and his companions with one of the more vapid songs I've heard in a while. Guess it pays to keep some kinds of personal data firewalled from the restaurant industry :-). I left the restaurant overstuffed, and things soon began to get better. I walked up to the Museum of Broadcast Communications to view the part of _Tales of the City_ I'd fallen asleep on when it was on home TV the night before, and some parts of the story finally began to make sense. The day's email reading went faster than expected, and when I got home, my younger cat finally decided to put an end to three days of hiding out in remote corners (he'd been a little under the weather, apparently). Being this age may not be that bad after all :-). It obvious that Douglas Adams believed that 42 had something to recommend it. Whether the judgment of the amateur cartographers of the City Council ought to carry quite as much weight is, of course, a separate issue :-). Although some parts of the movie were unrealistic (i won't ruin it by going into details :) ) it did me a world of good. I guess you could call me a lurker but i guess i'm shy about these things. I really enjoy this list and all the little tidbits of info. I'm a huge ("consumer"?) fan of Sarah and unfortunately have not had a chance to see her yet. Milla was also here in town last night and poor me couldn't go see her:( oh well next time for sure. see ya Bernadette ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 15 Jul 1994 19:11:16 -0400 (EDT) From: WAYNEPALMER@delphi.com Subject: Re: Philly Get-Together Dennis: As of about 10 minutes ago WXPN forecasted humid and in the 90's both days...and yes it's going to be outside. *=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=* | Wayne A. Hmmm. I can't recall if the original radio broadcast ever reached this point, but both the written series and the original tv series did include a "question" to the answer. This occurs in the second book of the series, _The Restaurant at the End of the Universe_, after Ford and Arthur are marooned on the early version of Earth. The question, imprinted in Arthur's brain is, "What do you get when you multiply 6 by 9?" Or thereabouts. The joke, of course, is that you most *definitely* do not get 42. It seems to me that another version of a question was written in flaming letters somewhere in the third book (or within the course of the third book; it would be rather disturbing if the publisher had actually managed to create a product that would become incendiary upon reaching a certain point in the action). Jeff ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 15 Jul 1994 16:33:46 -0700 (PDT) From: David Dixon Subject: D^2's "What's the Connection?" Quiz I posted this on rec.games.trivia today, and thought some of you music-heads would like a crack at it. D^2 ======================================================================= Yes, it's another lyrics quiz, but this one has a twist. The quiz has two parts; first identify the artist and song title from the lyric snippet, then group the songs into six groups of five each. For example, if five of the songs were: "Red", XTC "Down Colorful Hill", Red House Painters "Red Red Wine", Neil Diamond "The Lady in Red", Chris DeBurgh "Lunatic Fringe", Red Ryder they would be grouped together by the keyword "red". Four of the groups are like this example, being grouped by a keyword in the song title or artist name. The other two groups are grouped in different ways than this, but I'll let you try to figure them out. One point for each correct title, one point for each correct artist, ten points for each correct grouping (five points for getting all its components, five points for explaining what they have in common). Some of the songs belong to more than one group! Email your answers to me, dixon@argon.eecs.berkeley.edu, by Saturday, July 23. I'll post the answers on July 24. Good luck! 1.
