No, not the part about your being a big fan. :) There were at least two albums: _A Secret Wish_ (which was horribly mangled for U.S. release, I might add) and _1234_. The latter was recorded after the departure of Claudia Brucken, who provided more than her share of the band's innovation. The breakup was, not unlike that of the Beatles and the Smiths, unfortunate for both: Brucken went on to record some (by most accounts) hideously dull stuff, while _1234_ has its moments but never really transcends its mid-80's top-40 leanings. This has been Ethan's "Guilty Pleasures" report for the day. Future reports will bring you tidbits on such dubious delights as Roxette and Voice of the Beehive. :) Ethan ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 8 Jul 94 09:07:21 PDT From: jeffw@triple-i.com (Jeff Wasilko) Subject: Re: Intro+question/Julianna Hatfield At 1:32 PM 7/8/94 +0000, Mirko Bulaja wrote: >Big hi to all ectoers... > >This is brand new Happy fan on this side of terminal. I'd be interested to hear if she was in any other groups. Her husband (Danny White) may have also been in Matt Bianco. I saw a VH-1 special on Basia a few years ago, but my memory is fading.... I was a big fan back then. :) Yes, but Propaganda has spawned quite a children as well. Off the top my head, a few members formed a group called ACT, and later Claudia Bruken went solo. Later on, a few ex-Propaganda people re-grouped as Propaganda again, but with a vastly different sound. I'll post more details from home. The aforementioned step-mom has _Indigo_ and an earlier album that has Basia. >Her husband (Danny White) may have also been in Matt Bianco. Hmmm. This is striking a bell. Check the _Indigo_ liner notes; I suspect Danny White may have had a hand in that album... In any event, I'm pretty sure I saw the same VH-1 special you saw; I remember telling my step-mother about it. The number of contributions in hand or wending their way through various postal services is miniscule, so act now, or risk being left out of the chance for lasting fame, fortune, and recognition by the Hapster herself. What is this all about? Following is a (slightly editted) copy of the original call for participation, which should answer all of your questions. The Idea For the uninitiated, Happy Rhodes will celebrate her 29th birthday on August 9th. In what has become an Ecto tradition, we send her a collective gift, a tape or three of music submitted by individual Ectophiles. Your selections should be guided purely by music that you think Happy (or even other Ectophiles) would like to hear. It does _not_ have to be Ecto-fodder, female vocalists, etc. Give it some thought, but don't overly worry about achieving perfection. You certainly can do better than "I'm Henry the VIIIth, I Am", which I placed on the 1993 edition of the Happy Birthday Project tape. :) Let's get wide variety and wide participation! Original music is especially welcome! [I didn't see it, but I've been told by an unimpeachable source that in her last newsletter, Happy implored all contributors of such original music to copyright it beforehand. I pass this along.] The Mechanics Please limit your musical selections to ten minutes. I'm going to be stricter about that limit this year, since practically everyone violated it last time (which shouldn't have been surprising in this musically passionate group :) ). Yet feel free to add "filler" music, music to fill in empty spots on the tapes, though I cannot guarantee that the filler will be used. One time I used every scrap of it (and then some) and the next I used none. Just make sure you _clearly_ identify which selections are your primary contribution(s) and which are your filler material. In the very unlikely case of duplications, selections will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis -- another reason to act fast. However, for some historical perspective, duplications have never occurred (to my knowledge) on such a project, though songs have been selected from the same album twice. If you can, feel free to add a spoken personal greeting and/or introduction for your selections to your tape. If you can't but would like to add one, Mitch Pravatiner has volunteered to record any script you e-mail him [u15289@uicvm.uic.edu] in his mellifluous tones for eventual inclusion alongside your selection on the tape. Note that this introduction counts towards your 10min limit. Mail your cassette tape (C-100 suggested), holding your main selections, any filler material, and any introductions to me: Doug Burks 2223 NW 59th St #2 Seattle WA 98107 USA Mitch Pravatiner has also volunteered to serve as the Grand Master of Ceremonies, playing the role of disc jockey tying together any loose ends, voicing any necessary introductions for others' selections, etc. I will compile the result, slipping in filler and other topical selections as required. The final result (possibly along with a gift) will be wrapped and mailed to Happy in time for her birthday (I hope). The deadline To give me more time to put together the best possible tape, the deadline will be earlier this year -- 15 July. However, don't wait until the last moment! Contribute early and often. :) The rewards Besides the good feelings of contributing to such a noble group effort and the joys of showing off your musical fine tastes to Happy and other Ectophiles, all contributors will receive a copy of the final project tape using their submitted tape plus one tape free from my tape dubbing project tape cache. I will also cover the postage and packaging. However, if the project extends onto a third (or fourth! :) ) tape, the extra tapes are available only under the usual tape dubbing project conditions. Non-contributing Ectophiles can procure copies of the final 1994 Happy Birthday Project tape through the tape dubbing project on the usual terms. The volunteers I am personally gift-wrapping-challenged. Would someone like to volunteer to take the final tapes and potential gift, nicely wrap them, add a card, and ship it off to Bearsville NY? The questions Adding a gift to the tapes adds a wonderful touch to the present, in my opinion. I open the floor for suggestions for such a gift. I have some questions I'd like to raise to this collected audience. What do you think about the future of the project? Do you like the current format? Is two projects a year too much? Any and all opinions and suggestions are solicited! The end If you have any questions or problems, just let me know! Eagerly awaiting to be inundated by a flood of submissions, I remain ... (I daresay it should be the other way around.) Are they touring together? As for the SydStraw/KHersh show, it was moved from Park West to Double Door (North/Milwaukee) in Chicago apparently due to poor ticket sales. The Metro Clubhouse is selling tix in advance, still $13.50. Capacity is 400 and as of 2 days ago 160 were sold. Doors open 6:30, concert 7:30. Sue mentioned propoganda in which Basia did not sing. They have at *least* two CDs: A Secret Wish and 1234. Not sure if there are more. The question of where Basia *did* sing before going solo is still open. I saw the Roches live a couple of years ago and they are great. They have done lots of BVs as well, notably for Indigo Girls and I forget who else. I'm surprised no one mentioned they got their start singing BVs for Paul Simon (Rhymin' Simon LP? I'm not sure). That was just 2 of them I think. As for Tori TV appearances, I have a tape of an ABC In Concert she did a couple years back as well. I'm sure there are lots of others. And there is a video compilation from LE. I hope they do one for UtP... I'm sure they will. Tam sez Sarah is coming to Skyline Stage in Chicago Aug. 16 and October Project is opening for her. And Spirit of the West opens for Trag. Hip (we think) on a friday in July/Aug. but I don't recall which one(!). Sarah/Oct Proj tix go on sale Sunday/Monday, I'm not sure, in Chicago.
