Copperman Subject: Grab a name quick I just read that Bob Wiseman (I think that's the name, formerly of Blue Rodeo) has legally changed his name to Prince, since the name was up for grabs. John Wesley Harding has been joking about doing the same Chris Boek says: If there is still confusion email me, and if Christine and Greg or woj could let me know if the change sounds OK, then I'd be Happy :) If Bob and John are Prince, Prince is ?&%?, and Chris is Happy, how far can we possibly be from a return to the Tower of Babble (so save the world, don't tell Chris what's going on) Aimee Mann here (yaayyy!!!) opening for the Kinks (aaawwwww), thus pushing up the ticket price and the distance to the stage, and down the length of the set :-( Out of the blue - someone was marvelling at non-Americans wonderful usage of colloqual (?) English. Any comments on why that is? (the usage, not the marvelling) (The first obvious comment is why do you think only American's speak English, but he seemed most impressed by non-English speakers like those slang-happy Finns) Back to the bookstore, where Lewis Shiner was reading from his new book Glimpses. I'd never heard of him, but bought the book, which sounded great. Very music oriented, although it seems focused more on the late 60s stuff. Main character seemed on the verge of a breakdown, but in whatever state it was he arrived at, he was able to psychicly reproduce classic records as they perhaps should have been done in a better setting. In the reading, he re-did the Let It Be version of the Long and Winding Road into a Beatles song rather than a Paul solo song. It all sounded pretty intriguing, and the author was friendly and fun. (While music is integral to the book, the heart of it is really about the characters (poor) relationship with his father and how his death affected him.) (Also, prominantly features cats, as apparently did his previous book, Slam, where the main character was a proprieter of 23 cats who had inherited a fortune.) Yeah, but which *song* is that? Besides. I dare you to transcribe the lyrics to "Lazy Calm." I just *dare* you! ;-) >it works really well, especially when you are temporarily altered I wouldn't know. Jeff ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 29 Jul 1993 22:01:00 -0400 (EDT) From: Suspended In Duct Tape Subject: SANDMAN and Ingrid (what a pair) Hi! Greg Clow wonders: }This reminds me... at Neil's last signing here in Toronto, I }gave him a tape of "II" and "Ecto" (they were the only two Happy }discs I had at the time). That was about 4 or 5 months ago now, }I guess. I don't know if he ever listened to it, but with }someone *else* giving him Happy music, maybe he will. Maybe }I'll drop him some email (now that I know his address) and ask }him. Hey, maybe we'll even see some Happy lyrics show up in an }issue of SANDMAN. :-) So that was you!!! :) He has listened to the tape at least once, he mentioned having done so, but I'm not sure what he thought of it. To be honest his silence probably means he didn't think much of it at all, but I'm not 100% sure }And speaking of Neil... has Happy read SANDMAN? If not, someone }should buy her one (or more) of the collections for her }birthday Someone gave her one of the compilations, but when I asked her about it she hadn't gotten around to reading it yet, though I seem to recall she figured she would probably like it. That was some time ago, though, so I'm not sure of the current status of her SANDMAN reading history }And then once Happy is finished catching up on SANDMAN, we can }start her on CEREBUS... :-) Oh, my, what a concept. :) Jeffy reports about the Ingrid Karklins concert: }Ingrid was on keyboards, kokles, penny whistle, and violin }Very impressive was the song in which she played penny whistle }with one hand, keyboard with the other, and every now and then }moved the pennywhistle away from her face so she could sing Oh, she's still doing that? Keen. :) }There was a drummer (Stacey somebodyorother) and a bassist }(can't recall his name) both of whom were quite good. I was }quite impressed by the drumming, and it was nice to see a female }percussionist jamming away--it seems rare Stacey? Where was Thor??? He was AMAZING the last time I saw her- he must be off with his other band(s) in Austin }Ingrid was nice 'n talkative. Apparently they just left Austin }yesterday morning 10:00 am and drove for 30 hours Eeeek. Sounds like this is a repeat of their tour in February- they played in the DC area that time too, and probably in the same place }There was a surprisingly (to me) large Latvian contingent in the }audience and she spoke to them in Latvian a bit As I recall when they're in the D.C. area they stay with Latvian folks there- there's quite a network across the world. I knew a woman on my program in Germany who's Latvian/American, and made money when we were there by house-sitting for various Latvians in the Munich area. She even flew back to Boston for a weekend to attend a convention of a Latvian/American youth organization to put feelers out for post-graduation jobs, one of which has since panned out. Weird, eh? (Since she is from Chicago I asked Ingrid if she knew her- she said not personally, but the name sounded familiar! :) }And news...Ingrid says that Green Linnet has agreed to release }another album, so she'll be hitting the studio this fall!! Yep, aren't we all excited!!! For those Ectophiles in the Connecticut area who are interested in seeing her at the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown on Sunday at 7:30 PM, call (203) 347-4957 to make a reservation. The venue holds maybe 40 people at the very most, and when I was in M'town on Tuesday there were posters all over the place, so reservations are a Very Good Idea. If you get the machine (you probably will) leave your name and number and why you're calling, and Stephen will call you back to verify as soon as he gets the message Suggested donation at the door is $5. Please give more- the group which runs The Buttonwood Tree, NEAR (North End Arts Rising) is in dire, dire financial straits and may not be around much longer. :( I know of at least three ectophiles who are going to be there, maybe as many as five or six so far. Let's show up en masse and seriously weird her out. :) Meredith meth@delphi.com ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 28 Jul 93 21:52 MET DST From: uli@zoodle.robin.de (Ulrich Grepel) Subject: Re: as Klaus as Klaus can be > > [Klaus:] > > PS to Uli: ARTE (french/german culture TV channel) will show a feature > > on Mari Boine in the repeat of Megamix on Wednesday! Well - lucky enough I wasn't there on Wednesday. Lucky? Why? Well - that way I had to program my VCR to tape the whole show and that way I also got that old (about '81) video clip from Laurie Anderson they showed later. ;-) I have to admit that Mari Boine Persen life is a completely different experience than on the album. And, Klaus, how did you recognize her FACE? I certainly would not have had any chance to recognize her from my Gula Gula cover. Is your cover different too? And so I did not keep that video. GRRRR.. I think I have to buy it. (Easily availlable, I know a shop. Now please, anyone in Darmstadt and reading this is NOT going to Karstadt and is NOT going to take it away from me. GOT IT?)
