Maybe I should try to see fewer concerts....nah, that's not a very appealing choice Oh well, it was worth a shot >> 2) is there any place in this wide, wonderful net of ours that I could find >> Cocteau Twins lyrics? Or something Actually, this compilation was made for someone else specifically and I don't like sending/giving compilations made for someone to anyone other than the person it was intended for, except me, I like to keep copies of them, sometimes. This one was done b/c she had asked me about some bands that I have albums by and she doesn't. Since I had been sorta planning another one for her anyway, her asking about the bands was all I really needed to make it. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll keep it mind if I ever make a compilation that's not intended for someone specific. I have no idea when that might be, I'm having much more fun making them for other people and keeping copies for myself than just making them for me > Jeff Mike Mendelson said: > McGuyver writes: Umm, "Guyver-One" and MacGyver (or is it McGyver?) don't have anything to do with each other. :) My "mail-name" comes from a Japanimation thing that I saw and liked a lot. I'd torture myself over the order of the songs (once I've finally finished picking them) Trying to figure out what works best after this song, what would be good to start with and end with. For all the times I've asked myself those questions......Funny thing is, I didn't really do that with this one, I put the bands in an order and just filled in spaces with song on my whim, then I made a few minor adjustments, it took a *lot* less time > It is the sense of accomplishment and self-interest that > turns songs that you've heard a hundred times into something new and > infinitely intriguing. Add to that the thought that goes into assembling > a tape for a friend (esp. a good one) This fits in that category, truth be told (always!) the last 4 I've made (including this one) have gone to the same person. inf. For me, the satisfaction comes from hearing how I did in terms of making it. The order of songs, timing between them, things like that, that's usually what I judge myself on > I know I always tailor the thing > to that person... choosing songs and ordering songs to try to guess what > they'd like and make sure they don't lose interest. (e.g. making a happy > or kate sampler is different for every person I do it for.) In terms of tailoring, usually what happens is this. As I'm buying cds I hear things and fall in love with some songs and decide that (in this case) she needs to hear them b/c they're so great. And I'll toss some things on that I know that person would like. The order comes from what makes sense to me, I can't do it any other way. But I wouldn't send one person a compilation that was made for another person, I'd rather make a new one. :) I can't comment on writing my own music. I just don't have the knack for that. Sorry you two missed The Rainbirds :-( Vickie ps, however, Mari Boine Persen can be seen, if only for a couple of minutes, on the "One World, One Voice" video, which, if I can ever find again, I'll type in information about. (I know where the video is, it's the *box* I can't find. Pfft!) Anyway, it's something put together by Kevin Godley, produced by Rupert Hine. The video features a list of musicians a mile long and includes everyone from Peter Gabriel, Laurie Anderson, Suzanne Vega, Mari Boine, and Maria McKee to Nusrat Fetah Ali Khan (sp?), Lou Reed, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Clannad and tons of other people. Each artist only gets a small piece of the action (it's one long "song") but it's still pretty darn cool. It was cheap too, something like $12.00 at Tower, and well worth the price. (To me, 2 minutes of Mari Boine was worth that price and more!) ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 27 Jul 93 1:49:39 EDT From: Greg Bossert Subject: Re: Minesweeper (r) heh, another case of ectosynchronicity! jessica got "minesweeper" with windows for her new computer, and has been playing regularly. her expert-level times are impressive; she is a frighteningly good game player... i was intrigued enough to write a version for X11 (there was already a version, but i wanted to start my own from scratch -- i am a bit compulsive about Xwindows programming ;) i am thinking of adding strange new features :) when it's done, i'll let y'all know ;) um, that's all, i guess. :) footah! -greg p.s. It is now a sort of compulsive habit for me; hardly a day goes by when I don't take a Minesweeper break. It's about the only good thing that came with MS-Windows, which I otherwise despise As for being able to complete a game without guessing, one example has already been given and I know that there are a variety of other ambiguous positions possible. The best you can do is make the moves that are least likely to uncover a mine, and hope your luck holds out until you've found them all The "two-button thing" (pressing both buttons to try to clear all the squares around the current one) is actually very useful for avoiding mistakes, and greatly speeds things up when you hit a region largely devoid of mines by uncovering all of the empty space > i was intrigued enough to write a version for X11 (there was already > a version, but i wanted to start my own from scratch -- i am a bit > compulsive about Xwindows programming ;) i am thinking of adding > strange new features :) when it's done, i'll let y'all know ;) I'd be happy to beta-test it. Chris found a compilation tape called "Bigger Bolder Louder Faster" (aka "Follow Our Trax Volume Nine") which has some cool stuff on it, *including* a new Jane song! It's called "Sail Across the Water" and it's wonderful! Jane's voice is gorgeous and in beautiful condition. The song has a *great* groove (a groove that caused goosebumps while I listened on headphones!) and it builds momentum, just as Jane's voice does throughout and eventually the groove is buzzing your ears and your body and Jane is wailing and your eyes are closed and the lyrics keep getting darker and more intense and you know that Jane is back and is as subversive as ever and all is right with the universe and as the intensity dies down and the song fades you bring your- self back to reality and open your eyes and blink a couple of times and sigh and then go put it on auto-repeat for about the next few hours. Or so Vickie ps, also on this compilation is a *wonderful* new Heidi Berry song called "The Moon and the Sun." MJM, is this song on the album you bought? pps, Minesweeper? Hello again everyone. More random thoughts from me... :) 1) Can someone out there explain to me the Bowie "mythos"? I've never really been a big Bowie fan, but I do have his Changes CD. What I'm wondering is how some of his songs tie in? This has come up since I've been listening to Happy's "Ashes to Ashes" and really listening to the words. Is this song part of the "Ziggy Stardust" story? What other songs are included in the story? Any help is appreciated... :) 2) Does anyone else get goosebumps when Happy sings the line from RUTH? :) 3) In response to Jeff's note about WHFS possibly playing Happy, I do remember hearing that show when I took my wife to the airport last month Her flight left BWI at 8 am on Sunday morning, and I was somewhat surprised at the music they were playing. In retrospect, it does seem like a good show for Happy's music Also, when we took our trip to the beach :), we heard a show that featured covers of songs. We heard Sting sing "Tempted" and someone else sing "Invisible Sun". This sounds like a good show for "Ashes to Ashes". I don't remember what time the show was on, but Saturday mornings aren't usually early for me. :) The only thing I care about on Saturday mornings is "Schoolhouse Rock". :) 4) Woj, a blank tape is on the way for the tape tree.. 5) Vickie, nice response on gaffa to the "Dreaming" post. Some people take things a bit TOO seriously... :) 6) Why do I always post random thoughts? I guess I have a random mind... :) 7) Thanks to everyone who posted suggestions for places to visit. We're still amazed at all the history that's here. I think most people don't realize just how ISOLATED San Diego is And my little travel tip to anyone :), if you ever get a chance, take a trip of New Mexico. That's the place that Jenn and I want to move to eventually. We took a road trip there just before we left San Diego and we were STUNNED by the beauty of it. Carlsbad Caverns, White Sands, Bandelier National Park, Tsankawi (sp) ruins, etc etc... At Tsankawi, we had the whole mesa to ourselfs and we wandered along the cliff face and walked the paths that people walked ages ago. Plus, we got to explore all the dwellings. Ah, it was truly magical to be the only ones there... :) Take care everyone, John ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 27 Jul 1993 12:41:23 CDT From: Subject: Quote without comment "And, let's face it, there's an emphasis in America about how you have to be No. 1.
