It turned out to be a little over 11 minutes... hope that's OK. I am *very* pleased with the way the Shark song came out. I will email Doug a complete tracklisting this week Jean, is there a title for that poem? I did so many takes last night that I virtually have the thing memorized!!! I dance in the music as it revels in my being.. If you are reading this and you can email me the title of the song, that would be great. Otherwise I am just referring to it as the Shark song. :-) I do hope you order a copy of the HBP from Doug so you can hear the final version I also can't wait to hear what other ectopeople, whose opinions I highly value, think of this song. I played it all morning.. I also picked up some new CDs including the cranberries, Cranes (the latest one), heidi berry (I assume this self-titled CD is an american release that includes somgs from the import... true?), The Story's new one, and The Whole World by Penelope Houston All on recommendation from ecto. I got them all used (albeit for about $10 each) --- the store near me always puts out their comp copies and charges for them which is extremely slimy and illegal, and I feel a little guilty about buying things this way (but it is a bit cheaper than regular cd stores) Also, I got a new computer at work and it has a CD drive.... so now I can listen to CDs on my computer while I work... the program that runs it is a little frustrating though.... you can run it in background mode but it will only start at the beginning of the disk and go straight through... and if you reboot in the middle, you gotta start all over again. I must have heard the 1st 2 songs on the Cranberries album about 10 times this morning! Does anyone know of any better software for PCs to play CDs in the BG? My advice is if you absolutely have to guess, and there's no way you can work around it, go ahead and guess; it's better to get blown up early than to get the rest of the puzzle and THEN get blown up. Mega-frustrating I'm not sure what you mean by the "two-button maneuver". Trust me Oh alright, don't. I actually looked into this at one point, and, just so we don't have another ecto-mystery to accompany Senor Footah (well, I know the answer to that one too, but I'm not telling), here's the explanation The mailer on monet.vill.edu is sending out messages with a from address of brni@monet. This then passes through some VAX/VMS system at vill.edu that makes a half-hearted attempt at fixing things by adding a source route to the envelope-from address (so the return path looks soemthing like "<@wild.ucis.vill.edu:mojzes@monet>"--look far enough up in the headers and you should see a few of those), but leaves the header-from address alone, still "brni@monet" (bad mailer!). This then passes through Rutgers Rutgers has some antique Sun-3 (according to the host-info name service record) used as an X-terminal named (guess...) monet.rutgers.edu ns1.rutgers.edu, home of the ecto list, sees the unqualified 'monet', thinks to itself "that's one of ours--I can't let that go out like that" (being an overly conscientous mailer, unlike Villanova's (that is what vill.edu is, isn't it?)) and changes it to brni@monet.rutgers.edu. Ooops After I looked into this, I sent brni a note explaining the whole thing in terms their postmaster ought to have been able to understand, along with my best guess at the fix. Any > hints out there????? What's up with the two-button maneuver, anyway? First, I think it should be clarified that there are *2* common versions of Minesweeper out there (actually, one might be called Mines) One lets you pop anywhere in the grid, whereas the other one consists of a pair of feet that can only reveal squares adjacent to the clearing (I prefer the former) Anyway, the two-button thingie is just a way of clearing the entire 8-square surrounding once you mark the mines with flags. Extra work in my opinion And I disagree that you reach certainty after the first move. Consider: __ __ __ __ __ where each '?' is an unchosen square |__|__|_1|?A|__ Can be satisfied with bombs at: A, C, E, F |__|__|_2|?B|__ or: G, E, C, B |_1|_2|_3|?C|__ or: A, C, D, E, G |?G|?F|?E|?D|__ (draw these out to see what I mean) | | | | | If you look at those possibilities, you find that every possible square might have a bomb. Which means a guess is required This pattern can be done on a larger scale as well (but I *really* don't feel like drawing an Expert field in ASCII) For the record, my fastest Intermediate is 99 sec. and Expert is 699 sec Happy hunting! br!an -- __ ____ __ ____ __ __ (__==__) /\ \ / \_\ / /\ / \ \ / |\ / /\ (oo) ( moo.) / \_\ / /\ |_| / / /| /\ \ \ / ||/ / / /-------\/ -' / /\ | |\ \/ /_/_ / / / \ \/ \ \ / |/ / / / | U.T.|| / \/ |_| \ __ \_\ /_/ / \ /\ \_\ / /| / / * ||----|| / /\ ./_/ \ \ \/_/_\_\/ \ \ \/_// / | / / ^^ ^^ \ \/ |_| \ \_\ /_/\ \ \_\ /_/ /|_/ / Br!an Bloom \__/_/ \/_/ \_\/ \/_/ \_\/ \_\/ brianb@lobby.ti.com .. but music hides me so well, ..and reveals me.. oh well - HR ======================================================================== From: brianb@lobby.ti.com (Brian Bloom) Subject: Re: kd lang Date: Mon, 26 Jul 93 15:37:51 CDT > kiri > who is *really* beginning to hate 100 + /115 heat index weather > byhargie@olemiss.edu > ObWhineAboutDallasTemperatureYetAgain: One forecast pegged Dallas with a high of 104, and I have no *idea* what the heat index was supposed to be (but it's so humid we've been getting sporadic sprinkles the last coupla weeks) *sigh* *gasp!* br!an -- __ ____ __ ____ __ __ (__==__) /\ \ / \_\ / /\ / \ \ / |\ / /\ (oo) ( moo.) / \_\ / /\ |_| / / /| /\ \ \ / ||/ / / /-------\/ -' / /\ | |\ \/ /_/_ / / / \ \/ \ \ / |/ / / / | U.T.|| / \/ |_| \ __ \_\ /_/ / \ /\ \_\ / /| / / * ||----|| / /\ ./_/ \ \ \/_/_\_\/ \ \ \/_// / | / / ^^ ^^ \ \/ |_| \ \_\ /_/\ \ \_\ /_/ /|_/ / Br!an Bloom \__/_/ \/_/ \_\/ \/_/ \_\/ \_\/ brianb@lobby.ti.com .. but music hides me so well, ..and reveals me.. oh well - HR ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 26 Jul 1993 15:30:23 CDT From: Subject: Everybody loves a mystery and other stories Saturday, Stuart Rosenberg played a cover of Iris DeMent's "Let The Mystery Be" by 10,000 Maniacs and David Byrne, recorded in concert. It makes a nice coin- cidence to the renewed discussion in these pages of the etymology of "Footah." To me, "footah" has always seemed to be ecto's rough equivalent of the _World News Now_ national temperature index. They never reveal the formula for the latter; once, they did a segment acknowledging that many viewers had requested an explanation of what the index meant; Aaron Brown, in his inimitable style, went on to say that it meant that the index for that day was n(1) Fahrenheit and n(2) celsius, where n(i)=the actual index scores that day on the respective temperature scales (I forget what they actually were; what is more, the explan- ation of n(i) you just read was mine and not Aaron Brown's) The new Story album is quite good. The number "Fatso" is an adept sendup of the American obsession with thinness; if you didn't know who was doing it, you'd swear it was the Roches People who still plan to send intros for me to read for their HBP selections would be better off sending them to me directly (U15289@uicvm.uic.edu), rather than to Doug (to whom tapes with your musical numbers should still be sent), so that I'll get them faster--particularly now that time is growing short Mitch ======================================================================== Date: 26 Jul 93 19:46:04 EDT From: Mike Mendelson Subject: autopilot McGuyver writes: > 3) what do you do when you make a compilation that you like so much that > you keep listening to it over and over and over even though you think > that you should really be listening to something else? It is the sense of accomplishment and self-interest that turns songs that you've heard a hundred times into something new and infinitely intriguing. Add to that the thought that goes into assembling a tape for a friend (esp. a good one). I know I always tailor the thing to that person... choosing songs and ordering songs to try to guess what they'd like and make sure they don't lose interest. (e.g. making a happy or kate sampler is different for every person I do it for.) This all goes double when you write a song (and triple when you record the song!) that you really like. I wonder if people like happy/kate sit around listening to and admiring their finished product as much as I probably would if I'd written it. That would be a great (IMHO) interview question... one that I've never seen posed to any artist "How much do you listen to your own music? Anyone remember how high it went up the charts? Re: Sundays I most recently finally acquired RRR (and Blind). I *love* RRR I had meant to get this long ago... I'm sure I ordered it from some CD club and I think they lost the order. Anyways, it had been in my CD player for over a week until I had to take it out to record my HBP selections. I have not been able to get into Blind as much, but RRR grew on me right away. Believe it or not, that England song (the 3rd one) reminds me most of Men At Work!!!!! The new Story CD's first few songs sound like Michael MacDonald/ Steely Dan/lightish jazz-rock. There were definite elements of Jazz in their first album, but there seems to be less quirkiness and odd harmonies in this one so far (unfortunately) and so the songs seem not as challenging to the listener. I've only made it through the first third of the album, though. Perhaps part of this is attributable to the fuller sound with more instruments... I loved the percussive use of the guitar in the first album... this is what is so great about Shawn Colvin's solo performances as well I think. Has anyone seen the Story recently? Are they touring with a band? (Hope not.) I'm sure that many of the new songs would sound very different (and better) with just J and J and guitar It is still very good, though, and I would recommend it I suspect the later songs in the album will be even better..
