A friend of mine came by today on the way to sell off his CD collection (a long, grim story) at Ye Not So Olde Used Wrecka Stow, and gave me first dibs at the stack. Of the 30 or so tempting morsels, I snarfed U2's "Zooropa", Miranda Sex Garden's "Suspiria", Bowie's "Young Americans", and k.d.lang's "ingenue" for $20 plus taking him out to dinner. I then meandered into Sound Warehouse after a show (Austin Ectophiles (are there any others?): See "The Swan" at Hyde Park Theatre. Now. Hang up yer phone and call for reservations. Jason Phelps is a wonder of nature, even if he probably comes from a planet whose inhabitants can all move like that...) and found "Rhodes I" and "Rhodes II"! Wow WOW. Let me explain: For those of you who don't know who Reich is, he's an American composer (from New York state) who's one of the founders of minimalism. I personally like his stuff more than Glass. He composed the piece, "Different Trains," performed by the Kronos Quartet, which won a Grammy for Best Composition in 1987. In that piece, Reich used spoken word recordings of Holocaust survivors talking about their experiences, and the quartet would imitate the vocal inflections with their instruments. It's a brilliant piece of music, just barely missed my DID list "Early Works" has some similar pieces, "Come Out" and "It's Gonna Rain." What Reich does on these pieces is to take some spoken word recordings, put them on tape loops, then play them back at *slightly* different speeds, so that they go in and out of phase with each other. Then he adds more loops, and more, and the result is a quivering structured morass of noise that is absolutely mesmerizing On other fronts: to you Bobs fans out there who want to know when they're playing in your area, call their hotline number, 1 (510) THE-POOP If any of you have "new age" radio shows in your area that might play my tape, please send their addresses to me I called Susanne White today (well, her machine, really) to tell her to send some Happy to a certain music writer here in the Bay Area who is a *huge* Kate fan. Well, this was my first time experiencing Sun 60's music in any form. I was standing right near the bass guitar amp, and I can assure you that live, this band does not suffer from a lack of volume! Ouch. :) In fact, all of the instruments really overwhelmed the vocals. I'm not too fond of that. The band does shred, sure, but most of the songs still seemed rather weak. There was plenty of energy though As for the cranberries, if you like Sinead O'Connor's voice, you oughta like Dolores' too. I didn't notice the similarities until I went to the show The few songs I'd heard on the radio didn't quite inspire that comparison Ummm, live, I wasn't blown away, but they were still good. Dolores and the gang didn't really move around enough, though she did partake in some clogless clog dancing at the end.
