I just ran across what I believe is the source of the awesome whoooshes and drone that run with the THX logo in appropriately equipped theatres. It's the opening of "Countdown to Zero", side 2, cut 1 of Asia's otherwise forgettable album "Astra" (available in cheap bins 'most everywhere) ======================================================================== From: r.lovejoy1@genie.geis.com Date: Thu, 22 Jul 93 12:22:00 BST Subject: News A quick addition to my last post: When I spoke to Susanne recently, I was informed that Happy, Kevin, and the band are indeed rehearsing! Be still my heart! I note that indeed a semblance of organization is beginning to surround Chris' visit here! Chris will be arriving on the 13th of August, and if we go by his "plan", he'll be in the Philly area wednesday night. If his suggestions are fine with Greg and Christine, they're fine with me too. Or if any of you want to switch around due to schedule conflicts, that too is fine with me. Brni, do you have room to host Chris Boek as well? In other news, I have to admit to being a Heart fan too! It is interesting to note that at the time they remade themselves into an MTV-type band (and they were quite photogenic!), they were joined by Mark Andes on bass. Mark was the bass player for the band Spirit, who were true alternative pioneers and of whom I should have written in the ectophile's guide (sigh). Mark's work with Spirit was certainly more um, adventuresome than what he did with Heart, but I bet he made a bit more cash playing with Heart. Anyway, the recent album-by-album assesment posted here was right on the money! That's all for now. Glad to see some form taking shape on Chris' visit, let's stay connected. Chris, let us know if you need someone at the airport! Perhaps Christine can pick you up and I could drop you off! Or whatever! Cya! Jeff wonders about the pun and sets me to figuring out that Caldor is not a completely national name...yet. So here goes the explanation Neal was talking about a "Caldor" sculpture in DC. He meant Calder (as in Alexander). Normally, I am just as annoyed by those who meaninglessly correct others' spelling, grammar, etc. but this struck me as funny...by now, it won't strike any of you as being nearly as funny (explained punchlines are never as funny as the joke itself) Caldor (or Caldor's, as it is called (much the same way "Friendly Restaurants" became (first in verbal reference, and finally on their signs) "Friendly's") is a K-Mart like discount/department store. My SO and I joke that we usually encounter some hassle that compensates for whatever it is that is on some incredible sale at Caldor's. So, to summarize, when Neal spelled it (Alexander) Caldor, I pictured a tacky, plastic, day-glo sort of Jurassic-Park-merchandising kind of thing. Sam Walton was the founder of Wal-Mart and (I think) K-Mart...hence the reference to the caldOr sculpture resolving into his likeness.....whew! On to more important things. Jeff, if ever you give-in to the urge to piss on Helms' door, be sure to have previously drunk an extra quart of beer (and had an extra helping of asparagas), and deliver the extra volume in my name (You can even bill me for the brew and side dish). Have you seen the "ARTIFICIAL ART OFFICIAL" poster of Helms? Finally, does anybody have any foolproof schemes for success in ordering WOMAD tix from ticketbastard....y'know, like using modems or calling the furthest office which is actually carrying the show???? Tix go on sale for the SPAC show next? Friday, and I REALLY want to go. It's a truly wonderful album. Buy it now Juha, I guess that answers your question too, doesn't it? I just happened upon the video for U2's "Numb" on eMpTV. Very Interesting, she said charitably.
