The weirdest thing just happened- I'm writing this in my word processor, in a file called "ecto.720", since I go by dates and such, and the file was already in use... by the Digest from July 20, 1992! I think it's time to do some housecleaning on my hard drive... :} I'll post my playlist tomorrow, or whenever Delphi lives again- it's too expensive to do through GEnie now. I just wanted to post this bit: I searched the stores this afternoon trying to find Jane Siberry's new one, but they were all clueless. ("Jane who?" :P) I did, however, scare up a copy of The Story's _The Angel In The House_ before they even put it in the bin, and I'm listening to it now. It's quite nice... on first listen I think that's all I can say for it, but _Grace In Gravity_ had to grow on me a bit, too. There's a lot more instrumentation on this one, and slicker production, which at times seems to downplay the intricate harmonies that make them unique- but whether this is good or bad remains to be seen. One thing that seems evident is that this is really Jonatha's album, and Jennifer doesn't show up as prominently as on the first one. The verdict: one pinky toe up and wiggling, the other one undecided until a fourth or fifth listen. (Something did happen which somewhat restored my faith in humanity. I bought the album at the Strawberries down the road from where I work, and the woman at the register asked, "What are they like?" I tried to explain as best I could, and she said, "I try to listen to a little bit of everything- maybe I'll give them a try!" Could it be that someone with a clue is working in a national record chain store? I shudder to think what that may be doing to the balance of the universe if that's true.) While doing my show this evening someone called who was in the area on business from Albany- he had never heard of Happy, so I fixed that right away. :) I don't know what he thought of it, as he didn't call back, but he said he would check her out. I also announced at the end of the show that I post my playlists here and on GEnie- I'm sure no one actually wrote down the ecto address, but You Never Know, right? :) Meredith meth@delphi.com (Do NOT reply to where this came from!!!) ======================================================================== From: brianb@lobby.ti.com (Brian Bloom) Subject: Re: Greetings fellow Ectophiles! I have lurked on this mail list for several months now, occasionally sending private e-mail to individuals when their comments called for my comment, but never getting the nerve to dive into the fray, so to speak. I guess I felt a need to accumulate some more Happy CD's and feel a bit more confident -- I hate sounding too much like a 'neo' (a term for those who may overlap into SF fandom). My collection is not yet complete -- I have Warpaint, Equipoise, Rhodes I and most recently, HR5 (thanks to Vickie who emphasized that we lurkers qualify as Ectophiles and can legitimately be among the "Favored Few". *Thanks*!) I suppose I should get the stats out of the way early: Name: Ken Hoyme Home: Plymouth, Minnesota (a suburb of Minneapolis) Birthdate: December 8, 1957 Shoe size: 9 (American style) I am married (to a Veterinarian - just shy of 14 years) with two daughters (ages 4 and 6) who have their dad wrapped around their little fingers, and who *love* both Happy Rhodes and Kate Bush. (The Kate Bush "Whole Story" video gets play time comparable to Barney and Disney tapes -- they love to dance along!) We also have cats. (Lame excuses for members of the feline persuasion, though.) I work in a research center developing computers that aren't supposed to ever fail in order to help fly those airplanes that most people fly for granted. My introduction to Happy Rhodes came early this year when I finally found a CD of hers in a local CD store. The connection chain started with Peter Gabriel, who led me to finding Kate Bush, which led to rec.music.gaffa which expanded my horizons to Tori Amos and now Happy Rhodes. I had heard the references and subscribed to the Ecto mailing list before first finding her music. My musical life has been enriched greatly this past year or two as I have followed this path of discovery! My thanks to all on the net that have helped me along. I am looking to complete my collection and would be interested in the answer to the question posted a week or so back -- is it better to order them directly, or to find them at a store and use the purchase there to help get her noticed more? I have 'infected' a co-worker with her music, and he is ready to order a complete set of Happy's disks. (He is also interested in what would promote her music best.) Miscellaneous ramblings on topics which have passed by recently: Rhodes I: The sublime and addicting nature of this disk had already hit me when this discussion can by. I have been locked in on this one for nearly 2 weeks now -- it occupies about 70% of the time in my CD player. (It is in my ears as I type this.) I think my favorite is "Case of Glass", though that changes from listen to listen. The beautiful statement of a complete love that causes you to want to place your love under glass where you can simply gaze on them really hits me. And that the love is so strong that you would wish them to find as strong a love should they 'ever wander'. *That* is true and total love. When I played it for my wife, she also thought about the love a parent has for their child -- wanting total protection as they are young, yet praying for them to find a total loving relationship when they grow old enough to leave the nest. This observation has given me another angle when I listen to this song. There is both a simplicity and incredible sophistication to this collection of songs. Compelling... DIDs and DIBs I don't have the patience to be able to name top 10s -- it changes from month to month anyway. But, I find the lists interesting as it gives me the chance to explore new things that are liked by people that share some of my likes. Regarding the Thomas Covenant books -- *yes!*. I remember reading the first trilogy while in grad school. It was the first time I brought a fiction book with me to school -- (the second book). I finished it in my office, went home and was lost for that weekend until I completed the third. Wonderful read! I have one recommend, of a slightly different bent that what has been listed up to now. Read "Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follet. Follet is an espionage fiction writer that has a fascination with the Middle Ages. He had worked for years on this book based on cathedral building in the 12th century. But as a writer of thrillers with twists, the story is gripping. He shows a fascinating insight into the life and politics of that age. Hard to put down... Happy Tour: I was thrilled to see Minneapolis on the tentative list of cities for the tour. All of us (kids too!) will be there if that transpires. I mentioned this in my letter when I ordered HR5. Mental illness: I suppose this might have been discussed in the past, but it seems that Happy's music has a recuring theme regarding mental illness. Several songs on Rhodes I mention the topic (Rainkeeper, Possessed, Moonbeam Friends at a minimum). Others dance on the edge of it (Suicide Song, Step Inside). And Cohabitants on Equipoise. And the 'heavy metal' art covers could be considered in this vein. Does anyone know the reason for this?? Has Happy wrestled with this issue -- either herself or someone close?? Actually, Cohabitants hit me quite hard. My wife has a cousin who is a schizophrenic. I remember seeing him degrade, before being diagnosed and placed on treatments. At his brother's wedding, he sat in the corner and talked to imaginary people. It was terribly sad to see this change, and this song always makes me think about what it must have felt like inside of him as this illness grew. Scary stuff... Well, that is more that enough for a first post. Hopefully some of you have even made it through it. :-) Now that the ice is broken, perhaps I can put my $0.02 in more often.
