Just wanted to mention that if anyone is ever passing through southern Connecticut, before you get into WESU's listening area, check out WPKN in Bridgeport- 89.5 FM. They are quite eclectic, so you never know what you're going to get when you tune in, but it's guaranteed to always be interesting. On my way home from work today I caught the last half hour of Ruth Eddy's show, and heard, among other things a set of Celtic harp music, Zap Mama, "Dog Dreams" by The Story and Jane Siberry's "Everything Reminds Me Of My Dog". If I'd had a car phone I would have lobbied for a last-minute Happy request, but alas... They do have Equipoise, Warpaint, and HR5, and are giving airplay to all three. The best show I've come across is Binnie Klein on Saturday evenings from 6-10PM, featuring story hour at 8:00. We have exchanged tapes (I introduced her to Rainbirds and now she wants more :>), and she's a definite ecto-ish DJ. I do my best to call and promote Happy whenever there's a possible show on and I'm home, but it's hard to do alone, which is why I'm posting this. WPKN could (and would, I could help get it arranged) be a stop for Happy to interview were she ever to play in this area, and the station has a connection to The Buttonwood Tree, a coffeehouse in Middletown that would be a prime place for Happy to play an acoustic set, if she could be so persuaded (that's where Ingrid Karklins plays when she's in the area). But she needs to become a force there, which is difficult since they're *so* free-form. But I'm trying! (me not.) Unfortunately I twisted the order number in a recent discs order and exchanged 08.673 with 08.637. The unfortunate result is that I am now a 'proud' owner of a Hape Kerkeling maxi-CD. Well. I think I will listen to it exactly once, or if someone around here desperately wants to have it I would be glad to give it away. Just for the curious: Hape is a German cabaretist. :-/ Uli ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 14 Jul 93 23:23 MET DST From: uli@zoodle.robin.de (Ulrich Grepel) Subject: Re: Test post- non Love-Hounds disregard > By the way, I've been meaning to ask; is the 12" UK pressing of the single > of "The Sensual World" that's double-grooved on Side A with the > instrumental a common edition? Well, I have a copy of it. I don't think that's the only UK version, but I have another nice (not half as good as yours, but anyway) story about it: Some people always got the instrumental part and brought it back to the shop, complaining... If you do mathematics (eek! not again!), you'll see that if you have 1024 discs sold, one of them (statistically) will play the instrumental piece the first 10 times you play it. Might become annoying, waiting for 'the real thing'. Date: Thu, 15 Jul 93 23:54:19 -0400 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu Congrats to our own Dr. Kyrlidis. Hmm. Why do I have this really odd image of Angelos insisting upon being let backstage at a Gabriel concert: "And just who do you think *you* are?" sneers the bouncer. "Why I'm Angelos Kyrlidis, PhD!" at which point the doorman turns very apologetic, bows his head, and says, "Right this way, sir." Well, hey, it would be a nice graduation gift, eh? I finally got together with our other newly doctored doctor, Dr. Beth the other day. She says to tell everyone hi, and that she's doing her dangedest to get net.access. It seems she's stuck using this horrendous system called PROF (or PROFS?). I mentioned that to Mike and he just laughed before telling me it was some horrible IBM thing that worked as a front end to some other horrible IBM thing called MVS. Beth apparently managed to telnet into her account at keane, but couldn't send any mail. She hopes to rejoin these pages soon, though! In the meantime, she sends thanks to all the folks who wished her well... The news of mine to which Mike alluded briefly yesterday, is that I was accepted into the GIS program at the University of Maryland! Which is to say I'll be spending the next couple of years working on a dual MA/MLS in geographic information systems. Wow! I'll actually be entitled to have an account at umd (my syrinx.umd.edu account is, well, quasi legal. ;-) But enough about advanced degrees... Mitch, a slightly late but no less heartfelt happy birthday! You've done an amazing job of setting a good portion of the tone for the words that appear in these pages and it's always a pleasure to have you around. I'll note that you missed a couple of obvious Gabriel tracks in your list of music for the midwest... The most obvious, of course, is "Here Comes the Flood" which would apparently need to be put on infinite repeat. The other, of course, is "Washing of the Water" which contains the amazingly apt lines, "Oh roll on through the heartland / til the sun has left the sky" Uli: thanks for the note about Mike's NeXTform being on that CD-ROM. I made the kite early last January as a slightly late Xmas present for Mike. Scans of it and other kites I've built have been available on the net for a while, but now that I've been pressed onto a CD-ROM, I feel like I'm immortal. Or something. For those interested, you can pick up scans of some of my work can be found in the rec.kites archive. Anon-FTP to ftp.hawaii.edu and cd to pub/rec/kites/graphics. The /jpeg directory contains only my stuff. In the /gif directory, check out "kite1.gif" and "rev2jcb.gif." That last one is probably the best of the lot and features me flying one of my kites with the Jefferson Memorial in the background. If you *are* interested in these, I'd suggest waiting a little while. When Mike scanned 'em, he screwed up the quantization on the JPEG compression and thus the (24-bit) JPEGs are a bit grainy. I'm about to send the original photos off to another fellow who's offered to re-scan 'em for me, so I may be getting better quality scans in the next week or two. Date: Fri, 16 Jul 1993 15:54:24 +1000 (EST) Hi all, Sorry, about that last empty mail. It wasn't simply an attempt to diplay my sig in spurious places, honest .... I got my HR5 a few days ago. It's fabboloso :). It's funny that I always seem to have a need to invent words when I'm trying to describe things that I really like. English just ain't good enough :) And the surprises are nice :) I also picked up Cyndi Lauper's new album, 'Hat Full of Stars', then I went to pay for it. Ha ha. ahem. It's a _great_ album. I had to listen to it a few times to get into it, but once there, it was very worthwhile. The last track (which is also the title track) is just beautiful ... The first track, a little more upbeat is a favourite too. I don't what that one's called. Anyway, highly recommended! In case anyone's interested, this is my current itinerary for the tour of the US.
