Kate Bush, The Dreaming; Happy Rhodes, Warpaint (tie) 4. Tori Amos, Little Earthquakes 5. Happy Rhodes, Ecto And the most popular artists, based on # of mentions: 1. Kate Bush 2. Happy Rhodes 3. (Of course, the key word is "commerically", > since generally many singles are released as promos and "not for sale".) > > Thanks for the recommendation. > hi there. actually, my recommendation is to buy the albums rather than the best of sorts of things, since each album has a certain feel, and flow, and emotional, um, what word to use?, well, it presents a certain mood or emotion, which is different from album to album. cutting and pasting songs of theirs disrupts that flow. also, _the pink opaque_ is an early best of collection, so it won't reflect the later (cleaner sounding) stuff. lessee: _garlands_ is like edgar allan poe; blue bell knoll is sorta like the king arthur myths, and _heaven or las vegas_ is like one long very happy acid trip. i've heard _treasure_ and _victorialand_ (my friend [vic]tori[a] claims that it is the best album ever), but its been a while and all i can say about them is that i remember them being fabulous. i tend to like garlands best out of what i have. how'se that to confuse you a bit more? > > TRAVIS > hhtra@chevron.com > brni ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 13 Jul 93 22:40:08 PDT From: Neal R. Copperman Subject: San Diego, I like it, Really John S.: I wasn't knocking San Diego. I like it, honest (although it's no Baltimore :-)). My club going experience has been better in the Baltimore DC area though, and it's not too surprising that a local Baltimore band would only be given 45 minutes in LA, rather than the 2 to 3 hours they get in Baltimore (although they did get almost 2 hours in both Berkeley and Santa Cruz). If you need any local tips (clubs, theaters, resteraunts, whatever) let me know. In fact, what were a couple of your fave resteraunts out here. Chris ?: I believe that's who will be in LA soon. Maybe I'm as close as it gets being in San Diego, about 2.5 hours south. Do your travels take you outside the LA circle? I just saw Orlando tonight and I was a bit disappointed. On the plus side it is one of the most beautiful lush looking films I have seen in a while. Each scene was awash with colors and fantastic costumes. It moved forward rather slowly (or gracefully if you are more generous), and forward seems a bit of a misnomer, since it didn't seem to really go anywhere at all. I would have expected a bit more character development considering the time frame involved and the experiences of the main character. The feminist points seemed rather blunt and obviously stated, perhaps that is due to the age of the novel, but it did seem the director had her hand in on it too. (I recently finished the Female Man by Joanna Russ, and while this was obvious, at least it wasn't shrill and overbearing like that book. Any defenders?) All in all, I found it attractive looking, but not particularly moving. Does anyone know what else Sally Potter has directed, and how about who Quentin Crisp and Billy Zane are? All seem familiar, yet I can't place them. Neal ======================================================================== Subject: HR5 spotted! Date: Wed, 14 Jul 93 0:41:33 CDT From: Joe Zitt I was at Tower in Austin today, cruising past the newage section, when what do I see but a familiar half-woman-half-monster face staring up at me from in front of a band name card saying "Equipoise", filed dutifully under the "E"s. I reported it to the salesperson who snarfed them out of there and put them in the Happy Rhodes section under Popular. He said he knew that she wasn't newage since he had just been playing a compilation disk on which he heard her doing some Bowie song. I doubletook and asked if I could see the disk. He pulled it out of the promo rack -- there, indeed, was HR5! I told the guy some stuff about Happy and the net-based fandom, and asked if he could get the 1st 4 in. He said that I should have showed up about 5 minutes sooner, since the Big State Distributors rep had just left. *arrgh*. Anyway, he said that, having heard HR5 and liked it, he'd be sure to order more Happy. I followed up with the ordering information, and also mentioned this mailing list. There's a slight possibility that someone already subscribed in reaction to that, so if there are any other Dutch Ectophiles out there, why don't you just say hello? I also offered the possibility to get a sampler tape, and two people have replied to that. I'm not making the tapes myself, but I'm sending Doug their addresses, so he can send the tapes to them. Very convenient! Albert P.S. Meredith, I'm sorry, but I have to punch a hole in you theory. In a recent newsletter from the Dutch Kate Bush fanclub (Kate), they mention that "Eat the Music" is indeed the first single from _The Red Shoes_. They got their information from EMI Holland. "Big Stripy Lie" is a reference to the American flag. ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 14 Jul 1993 01:07:08 -0700 (PDT) From: Neile Graham Subject: A belated DiD Sorry, but it took me a long time to decide (even though this list would probably look different some other day). I'm really looking forward to this concert, and of course, the company. :) Also found a copy of the Jenni Muldaur disc, which I don't like. I found it a little too pop for my tastes.
