Well, I just returned from a very good visit to the Washington D.C./ Baltimore area. Aside from attending a wedding and seeing some other friends and relatives in that area, I was able to (finally!) meet Jeff Burka, ectophile extraordinaire. It was Jeff who originally transcribed the 1st3 (I did a bit of proofing and editting as did VM but Jeff did the lion's share) and we agreed decidedly that this effort proved catalystic encouragement for Happy to master the 1st4 on CD. So, it was great to meet you, Jeff! And your patience with my crazy driving and Debbie's crabby demeanour (to which she has since confessed and apologized for :-) was laudable. Moreover, it was good to have someone along who knew their way around the capital district (any of you who've ever driven around D.C. I'm sure will concur). We hit some touristy sites, including the new National Holocaust Museum (highly recommended: free, but you need tix in advance), a very cool sculpture on Haine's point, and the D.C. Tower, where I got a coupla mixed things: Fairground Attraction: 1st of 1M kisses --- very good after a few listenings; reminds me a bit of MMO, and even kd lang at times (ingenue era) Perfect CD5 --- this has 4 tracks listed but only 2 are on the disk!!!!! I hope I can return it or something. Saint Etienne: CD5 --- noticed this showing up on Meth's playlists: I rather like them: a little etherial even; what else is out there and who are they, Meth? Aimee Mann: I Should've Known CD5 --- 2 non-album tracks for us completists; BTW there is another non-album track that beats these two on the Imago Road Show sampler ($5 from Imago) called "Jimmy Hoffa Jokes". Woj, I stuck this on your tape... whaddya think of AM? Anyways, this just proves that it is possible to meet other ectopeople away from home and come Labor Day weekend I hope to have another go at seeing Woj and Meth in NYC. -mjm P.S. Vickie I might just have to come over and steal your Happy Come Home for a few days because I just can't find it anywhere and I'd like to hear it before I get the tribute... ======================================================================== Date: 07 Jul 93 14:38:44 EDT From: Mike Mendelson Subject: Acckkk! Every time I get through one ecto digest it seems I get two in the offing... Ack! Who has the time to read all this good stuff. Woj wrote, in reference to something I haven't read yet... >count me amongst the _breakfast in america_ fans as well. heck, it was the >first album that i ever bought (that and fleetwood mac's _rumors_, if you I *LOVE* Supertramp. BiA was the first album I ever bought (well, it was either that or Queen's greatest hits... I bought Rumors for my cousin as a birthday present on the *same* trip to the store, I think). Is this hilarious, or what? Looks like Woj gave his reactions to the tapes I sent him just as I was asking about them. As for myself, I found Robyn H. solo somewhat annoying, whereas with the Egyptians it was better. I know I like that song Madonna of the Wasps (which was not on your sampler) and the new driving song (which was). Peter Hamill, well, I've only listened to a bit and it hasn't totally grabbed me yet, but not as annoying as solo Robyn. I'm sure repeated listenings will improve my rating though, they always do (I couldn't listen to most of the Dreaming for at least 6 months). I *told* you you'd want to buy Aimee Mann's album. I pretty much agree with you about Gogh and Mylene --- they're ok, but I don't listen to them much. Re: Harmonium, I defer to Justin, who I know has their CDs too, to give you background. I think they are long broken up (5 Saisons, their best, the one I sent you, was circa 1975), but I don't know if Serge is still putting stuff out. Their first album is also great, and their last (a double CD) is way more mellow, but still good (I fall asleep to it often!). Pity they never made it outside of Montreal... anyone I've ever played it for has had much the same reaction as you did. I know I put Dixie on an HBP tape once (remember, Vick?) but you're pal, Mr. Footah, black-holed that one I believe. Correct? Is it still extant, guys? BTW, when in D.C. I listened to WHFS (at Jeff's recommendation). Sunday A.M. they had an acoustic show and played Heidi Berry which I *loved* (and will seek her album more eagerly now). This was a cool station... too bad XRT is a close as Chicago comes to it (U2, U2, U2... Ugh!). PG less than 1 week away. Mitch ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 7 Jul 93 17:54:16 PDT From: Neal R. Copperman Subject: what's the fuss and fuss What's the fuss: Bela Fleck. I guess I just don't get it. I haven't actually heard any discs, but I saw him live about 3 years ago. Seemed ok, but I wasn't very excited, and I was turned off by the endless self-congratulatory commenting of the band. It's ok for critics and fans to say that you are redefining the banjo and taking it to new directions, but it seems like it's something you, or your band, shouldn't repeat too many times at your own show. That, plus my lack of interest in the new directions they were going, really left me cold. Maybe I should give a cd a try. Fuss: I finally got my happy stuff in the mail yesterday. I haven't been in any position to listen to hardly any of it, since I spent 5 hours in transit to see disappear fear (a great baltimore band) in la. Unlike in Baltimore, where they usually play for 2 hours or so, they only had 40 minutes to pound out a sadly abbreviated set, but it was still good to see them. I recommend them to anyone who likes the Indigo Girls and any rough yet tender female singers. I got home and had a great surprise from Aural Gratification waiting for me. I ripped it open and out came Rhodes I, Ecto and HR^5. My girlfriend immediately said, "What terrifying album covers. I don't like them." I thought they were great though. Are they works of Happy herself? While ectophiles are credited on the discs, the actual cover art is not. Before going comatose, I had to listen a bit, so I through in HR5. Girlfriend thought I had mysteriously decided to put in Kate Bush for no obvious reason, which was pretty remarkable, since she can never guess who anyone is ( REM?? no this one's Peter Gabriel.). I liked Feed the Fire, but the resemblence to Kate was uncanny. Ashes to Ashes was just as fun, and I was really warming to the music. Thought the next song was great, but by then my conciousness was about gone, so I don't even remember the title. We did agree that the music sounded great and it was scary how much she could sound like Kate. It was also clear that she could do things that Kate couldn't. She has a great low voice and can drop down to areas Kate certainly couldn't hit. I'm looking forward to actually having a real listen to the music soon. I'm not even sorry that no one told me about a sampler tape so that I struggled before making my 3 cd purchase, since my 3 songs and disc inspection has already left me feeling like my money was well spent. Plus a nice greeting, what a bonus. And now I even know where WretchAwry comes from. Great name appropriation Vickie. I have had an experience with ectosynchronicity before. I was out with a friend of mine and while driving places I had _Wapaint_ playing. We ended up going to another friend's house later that night to watch a movie. When we got to his house "Wrong Century" was the next song that would be played. It turns out that the movie was about a man who goes back in time to another century. (I remember humming "wrong century" the rest of the movie :) ) The one guy who was there who has borrowed _Warpaint_ from me wasn't familiar enough with that song and the other guy I have't played any Happy for....yet, so I was the only one who realized what was going on. I feebly tried to explain it...but gave up and decided to bask in the odd moment. :) I didn't know the content of the movie when we decided to watch it, let alone when I decided what to listen to while driving. but that's the story...sometime I may post my thoughts about lollapalooza (I still have to write them down :) ) but that won't be for a couple of days...my summer class comes to an end on the 9th, so I'm getting ready for the final. bye for now....
