They came highly recommended to me by several of the people who I went with (with whom I went just doesn't sound right to me), as well as my housemates, who had to beg out for financial reasons. For those who are unfamiliar with their work, they are notable (besides raw talent and a great sound) because Bela himself plays a banjo, an instrument somewhat neglected in current "cuting-edge" jazz, although the Preservation Hall Jazz Band wouldn't be the same without "The Only Left-Handed Banjo-ist in Captivity". More notable, is the rythym guy, who play the "drum-ax-bass-synth-itar" (and has his shoes wired into the synthesizer for cymbals usually). And that, although they do great things with them, the don't let them get in the way of their music. Anyway, I'll shut up now. I saw her 99.9oF show last night - and it was fantastic. I really liked the lighting. They did a very interesting job of it ... I've recently gotten into theatrical lighting myself, and I was quite impressed by the things they did. But then I suppose I'm easily impressed. Some of the renditions of the songs were good. Most of them sounded like the album versions, but Marlene on the Wall was done a little differently, which was nice, but I really liked all of the songs. She did two encores, and each one started with just her coming out and doing something solo ... The first was Tom's Diner, which was just her voice, and it was really really good :). The second, well, the second was The Queen and the Soldier. Need I say more ... ? It was by itself at the end, and was *wonderful* :). In the middle somewhere she told a couple of funny stories ... the first was about how the first time she was in Australia, she went to one of the gigs, and saw some people queueing up outside, so she went up and spoke to them, but before too long, a bus turned up and all of the people got on :) :). Gosh how embarrassing .... She told us about when she was five, and at school she was taught all these songs that they sang. They didn't know what they meant, they just sang them. She mentioned the song 'Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree, merry merry king of the bush is he' one, "That's Australian isn't it ?" she asked :), and the she sang this other one for us that had somewhat suggestive lyrics (I must admit that I can't actually remember what the lyrics are ) sort of making the comment that she used to sing it when she was five ... lucky she didn't understand what it meant :). A nice touch I thought. Anyway, I loved it. And now, I should do some work. Chris. P.S. My choice of stops may be very limited I'm afraid when I pop over to Holland ... I'm trying to see if I can make a stop in New York, but if I have to stop in more places, it could cost me >$500 more for the ticket. "In the best interests of the child" Yes, I agree and I feel with you. I've read about similar judgements where children were treated like lifeless and unfeeling goods. This often happens to aliens with a temporary residence permit. Their children grew up in Germany, are perfectly speeking german, have german friends, and suddenly the courts decide: you have to go "home". But where is their home? They are considered as strangers in Germany and they will be considered as strangers in their "native" country. The courts don't ask the children where they feel home and where they want to stay. They only "comply with the rules", what is a cheap excuse. I can't understand the courts that decided about Jessica. A mother who gave away her baby and suddenly wants it back isn't what I would call a mother. It's guaranteed that she wants to get rid of her daughter at every turn, when she's crying, when she's ill, when she's romping, etc. On another tangent: I listened to the Femme Music Collection I+II again this weekend and I like it more and more. I truly miss all of you folks and I look forward to being reconnected shortly! The deadline is less than four weeks away, and with the necessary intervention of a myriad of postal services, ACT NOW! If you've forgotten what this is all about, I've tacked the original (well, slightly editted) announcement onto this message. Some contributions are starting to trickle in. The current list is: Albert Philipsen Steve Fagg Doug Burks (Admittedly, I haven't put mine on tape yet, but I have made my choices. :) ) Let's give Happy a rousing birthday present. Contribute early and often!! Doug Burks _O_ dbx@olympic.atmos.colostate.edu |< She really is!! Greetings, On August 9th, our heroine Happy Tyler Rhodes will turn 28 years old. Such a day definitely should not pass without some collective gift from Ecto. Thus this is the announcement for the 1993 (or 28 AHR (or 35 AKT)) version of the Happy Birthday Project. The collective Ecto gift will be a tape or two full of greetings and music collected from Ectophiles. Anyone who wishes to contribute should put together a tape of personal greetings, wishes, their chosen songs, and any introduction for the song(s). All of this will be compiled onto one or more tapes which will be mailed to Happy in time for her birthday, possibly along with a small additional gift. That's the gist of things, so let's try to anticipate any questions. * What songs should I choose? Choose any song that you would like Happy to hear. The only restriction is that your total contribution of greetings and music should not exceed ten minutes. Thus you can even choose two or even three short songs, if you so desire. In spite of this, feel free to contribute some extra songs, in case some troublesome empty space needs to be filled. If you do so, be sure to indicate which songs are your true contribution. * Recording and mailing a tape seems like a lot of effort, can I avoid any of that? The only way is if your chosen song is buried somewhere deep in my collection, a possibility (though not a likelihood, knowing this crew :) ). In that case, I can record it straight from my copy, avoiding one copying generational loss in the process. It's certainly worth a try, so why not check? * How can I add my personal greetings, when I have no equipment to record my voice? We have two different options available. One, Mitch has volunteered to use his mellifluous tones to record any greetings you wish, so e-mail him [u15289@uicvm.uic.edu] a script for him to record. Two, if you are too shy to write anything, Mitch will record an introduction for you, including your name, city/country of residence, your selection, and anything else that pops into his mind. :) * Where do I send my contribution? All contributions should be mailed on cassette tape to me: Doug Burks, 2036 West Plum St C7, Fort Collins CO 80521 USA * Can I get a copy of the finished tape? The final tape will be available to any Ectophiles via the tape dubbing project. Contributors who send me an actual tape will receive a free copy of the tape, including free postage and packaging. However, if it runs onto two (or three (or four (or ...)) tapes, the additional tapes will be available under the tape dubbing project conditions. * What happens if someone else picks my song? In the past, Ectophiles posted their selections to avoid this. However, I personally prefer surprises on the final tape, so will not require this. (Should you desire to post them, though, don't let this stop you). Also given this group's eclectic tastes displayed in past similar efforts, duplications are quite unlikely. If that unlikelihood does occur, the duplications will be handled on a first-come basis, another good reason to submit more than one song and to submit early. * What is the deadline? We are going to get it out on time this year, even if I have to be a bitch (or whatever the male equivalent is :) ) about it. The deadline for all ends of the project is August 1st. Anything sent after that date will never see the light of day. While that sounds deep in the future, time flies, especially in the summer or with slow postal service. Act now!! Contribute early and often!! :) I hope this covers everything. If you have questions, problems, or comments, feel free to ask me personally or raise them here. Here in Ann Arbor where the DeBoers live, it's been an all too constant news item for most of the last year, what with all the legal machinations. The DeBoers never actually adopted Jessica--by the time they filed the papers to complete the adoption, Dan Schmidt the {un} natural father had gotten involved. This is a point that has often gotten lost in the national coverage--to the terror of adoptive parents everywhere, who could conclude that the same thing could happen to them. The baby is at the mercy of blind justice because, not having been adopted, she falls through the cracks in the law as it's now constituted. This doesn't make the situation any easier to stomach, but it does make it a little easier to understand where the courts are coming from. Too bad they're so wrong...
