One afternoon Mr. S -- whose name was Neil -- made some mushroom tea for himself, leaving the unused portion in a pot on the stove. From: RODRIGUES CRAIG J Date: Sun, 4 Jul 1993 14:15:33 -0400 Hello all, I've just joined this mailing list, and have never heard of Happy Rhodes before, or any of her music. The reason why I joined this mailing list was because while on IRC, I "met" someone from Norway named Yngve, who gave me the Happy Rhodes FAQ. I found the FAQ very interesting, and found it a bit bizarre that someone from Norway was telling me about a singer from Rochester, NY, whom I had never heard of before. (I am in Toronto) I tried looking for Happy Rhodes stuff in all of the cool record shops in Toronto, but could not find anything. Does Happy have Canadian distribution? If so, where? If not, is there a store in Toronto that has her on import? I would prefer to hear a song or two before buying anything....but if I can't get it locally, I might take the plunge and order directly from Rochester....my curiousity about this singer has definitely been piqued! Does Happy's music bear any resemblance to music by the Sundays? I think that the lead singer of the Sundays, Harriet Wheeler, has an incredible voice. Don't stop to think about it :) Honestly, it is one of the best films I have _ever_ seen. It's very funny in parts - when it's funny it really works. It's very moving in parts - when it's moving it really moves you. Really. Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie have always been favourites of mine, and they make no exceptions in this film. Hugh Laurie is quite a good actor. I saw their series 'A bit of Fry and Laurie', and really liked it, but always got the impression that Fry was the main man of the two. IN this film, however, which was written by Rita Rudner and Martin Bergman, Hugh outdoes Fry. Not that Fry was bad. Quite the contrary. Rita Rudner was fabulous too. It's a fantastic script, only I'm a bit dubious that it was exclusively the listed writers. The bits Stephen Fry does are _very_ Stephen Fryish. The bits Rita Rudner does are _very_ Rita Rudnerish. But that goes without saying ;). Kenneth Branagh was fantastic too. As was Emma Thompson. Wonderful film. Go and see it .... just go and see it ...... Don't stop to think about it :) It came and went so fast here that I never got a chance to see it, even though I wanted to. I'll definitely see it when it comes out on video, or on cable. I'm a sucker for "old-friends-get-together-after- many-years" movies (probably because I had no school friends and it's an alien and fascinating world to me :-)). "The Return of the Secaucus Seven" is the best by far, but I have to admit a very soft spot for "The Big Chill" too, even though it's a yuppie movie. It was still very funny, and even moving in parts. Besides, any film that starts out with "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" wins my heart. Mitch could talk more about Secaucus Seven because it's his favorite film. It's been years since I've seen it, though I *loved* it when I did. Speaking of good movies, we saw "Sleepless In Seattle" and had a great time, but the most recent film that we really, *really* loved was "House of Cards" starring Kathleen Turner. It's *SO* good, so wonderful and moving. It's gotten bad reviews, which just tells me that those reviewers didn't "get" it. I've heard it called "pretentious" and "confusing" but we certainly didn't see it that way. It's about a little girl named Sally who exhibits autistic behaviour months after her father is killed in Mexico. It's about how her genius qualities get concentrated in some very unusual ways while she's in this state. It's about how her mother (Turner) tries to reach her one way, while a doctor, an expert in autistic and developmentally disabled children, tries to reach her another way. It's about a lot more than that, but those are the basics. It's a very powerful film, and it left us limp and teary. It's the kind of film that you don't want to say too much about, because there are so many magical and mystical qualities to it. It's a movie to *feel* as well as watch. I fear it won't be around too long, because we saw it Friday night during prime time (7:45pm showing) and there were less than 50 people in the theater :-(. We were upset because as soon as the ending credits started rolling, the house lights came up completely and ushers started rolling around trash cans to pick up litter! I *hate* that! Besides the fact that we always watch the ending credits and they're hard to read with the lights up, we were sitting there stunned from the impact of the film and could have used a few extra minutes to adjust to the "real" world. I had a talking-to with the manager of the theater :-) and she not only apologised, but gave us free passes too. I didn't ask for them, but I accepted them. "House of Cards" -- highly, highly recommended! Live Elektronik & Tape Music I ------------------------------ The venue was the Cathedral St. Marien. 1. Johannes Fritsch (born 1941) performed his composition "Violectra" (1971) for Viola d'amore and synthesizer. He used two microphones to pick up the sound, one on the left and one on the right side. Both were connected with a delay (0.7s). The two signals from the left mike were directly sent to the PA, the two from the right side (direct and delayed) were sent through the ring modulator of the synthesizer. A ring modulator is a frequency shifter with two inputs that produces a multiplicative mixture of the signals: 600Hz \ / 840Hz (600+240) input X output 240Hz / \ 360Hz (600-240) The outcome is a very noisy, metallic sound. Each of the four signals was sent through one of the four speakers that were arranged around the audience. Fritsch played short repetative patterns on the viola and moved it from one mike to the other so that the sound changed continously. The result was very hypnotic, especially because of the atmosphere and the sound in the church. 2. Peter Michael Hamel played the same composition as the day before (Le Tombeau de Messiaen) on his computer organ, but the sound was MUCH better than before. The second composition came from tape and was recorded with an organ and synthesizers. Hamel requested the people to get up and move around and let the music affect the senses. I missed the third part, because I had to move to the next venue where the Kraftwerk concert took place. Kraftwerk --------- I arrived one hour before time but there was a huge crowd waiting in front of the entrance, already. They came from all parts of Germany (it was the first concert of Kraftwerk in years and the only one in Germany and one of two altogether). The audience was quite mixed, but there was a remarkable number of young "techno-kids" who haven't been on Earth when Kraftwerk released their first album. Ten minutes before the beginning they started playing cheap computer music, first on a very low level and then growing louder. Suddenly the light went out and a computer voice announced the band. The curtain opened. The stage looked like the bridge of the Enterprise. The equipment (I don't want to say instruments) was arranged in a big semicircle and each "musician" stood behind a big console. In the backgroud were hanging four big video screens where they projected computer graphics and videos. The four men were dressed in black, very smart with ties and they looked very sterny. They performed the complete mix album, i.e. the remixes of all their greatest hits - nothing new. Most of the videos were taken from very old black and white pictures from the 40's or 50's (Autobahn, Trans Europe Express, The Model), which was a nice contrast to the music. The first encore was The Robots. When the curtain opened nobody has been on stage. The music played and they showed the video for the song. Suddenly the screens moved up and the real robots were standing behind and started moving - very impressive. The curtain closed. Second encore was Pocket Calculator. The four Kraftwerker were standing on the edge of the stage, everyone with a kind of remote control in his hands on which they "played" the music. Two of them held their control into the audience so that some of them could press the buttons. For the first time the musicians were smiling :) The last encore was ... mmmmh ... Music Non Stop, I think. All in all it was the most unusual concert that I've seen.
