I feel a little like a cosmic vagabond myself (sorry Klaus). British ectophiles look out! Heh. I've managed to pass on the word about Happy to several friends. The interesting news I found out about this is that a local chain here, Silver Platters, is also carrying _Warpaint_. The Tower branches here have been carrying it for a while. Just wondering--do Rainbirds have any other cds besides the self-titled one? I just bought it at a cut out sale for $3 and love it. I also bought Bel Cantos _Birds of Passage_ and have been playing as often as Jim will let me (hi Jim when you read this). I really appreciate how people share their new musical interests here. It gives me a safe way to experiment in buying new music--I can trust your taste. (Though I'm not about to buy _Diva_. Annie Lennox's choice is songs I find quite boring and *for me* she fits in the nice voice bad material category.) Vickie--did you ever get the tape of Dalbello I sent you? Have you had a chance to listen to it? Did you like it at all? I meant to put in a Dalbello song for the HBP but never got my act together enough to buy the required 100 minute tapes before the deadline. Anyway--time to get packing. I'll be looking forward to the stockpile of digests when I get back. --Neile neile@u.washington.edu ======================================================================== From: guetzlaf@gravity.cray.com (Cathy Guetzlaff) Subject: Happy in Ladyslipper Date: Sun, 26 Jul 92 16:03:37 CDT I just received a copy of the Ladyslipper 1992 spring update catalog and here's what it has to say about _Ecto_ (it's listed under New Spring Titles, Rock): "Happy has a voice which will be (exhaustively) compared to Kate Bush and Annie Lennox's; there's just no way to avoid the comparisons, but her visions are a bit darker, say in the gothic-apocalyptic vein - or, rather, lots of blood red roses and peeling wallpaper kind-of-moods... Anyway, it's just the greatest voice, and when she self-harmonizes, the result is just heavenly! The instrumentation is highly melodic and sometimes heavy synth, with sprightly counterpoints - 'complex and labyrinthine but at the same time totally natural.' This 1987 release is her 4th; highly recommended!" The cost is $15.98 plus shipping and handling when ordering _Ecto_ through Ladyslipper. They also have _Warpaint_ available for $15.98 for CD and $9.98 for cassette. -- Cathy Guetzlaff Cray Research, Inc. guetzlaf@gravity.cray.com ======================================================================== Date: 26 Jul 92 22:40:53 EDT From: Bob Brown <74756.1557@compuserve.com> Subject: Happy on TV! I was flipping channels during a commercial break of the olympics this afternoon when I landed on a station with some guy with a guitar in his hand sitting on a stool. What's so unusual about this you ask? Well, on the wall behind him was a 8x10 promo photo of Happy! I couldn't believe it! Quite a nice picture too. It clearly had Happy Rhodes printed under the photo and it was signed by Happy with a note on it to whomever it was for. The guy with the guitar was talking about his music (I still have no idea who he was) and after about 3 minutes or so the show ended and credits started rolling. The entire time Happy was prominently displayed in the upper left corner of the TV screen. The cable channel I stumbled across was a local pay channel called PRISM and it turns out that the footage was filmed at 21st Centruy Sound in Bryn Mawr. I presume it was the back room of the store and the photo was from Happy to Lenny (the owner). It was a very nice photo of her...wish I had one. Finally getting a chance to relax after a month of craziness here. I've been lurking and following the happenings here. I haven't been able to do much else though. Vickie - Do you still need a copy of that tape...if so, let me know and I'll get one out to you this week...I promise! Meredith - I enjoyed reading your posts about the lesbian/womans music. Your views and comments made me sit up and say - Right On! Greg and Jessica - I owe you guys dupes of my pix for the Ectozine. Can you still use 'em or is it too late? I'm awful sorry for not getting to it. Our vacation from hell (putting my wife in the hospital...she's much better now) and stressful work schedule has really taken a toll on time since I saw you guys last month. Anyone have any more details on the Sept benefit here in Philly? Perhaps I should call WXPN this week and get some info. I think with the onset of middle age, I'm losing my ability to defer gratification; I came out of there having paid full price for the new albums by Meryn Cadell (which, it turns out, is really how it's spelled), Maggie's Farm, the Story, and a couple of other things that looked enticing even though they weren't even on sale. But to make a long story longer, my most important discovery was that the cassette section, at least, is now carrying _Warpaint_--and at full price, to boot. Vickie will no doubt find it reassuring that not every large retailer feels the same about this album as Rose on Wabash. Glad to see that Vishal picked up on the same _bon mot_ on Mike's part that I did. As gender-bending metaphors go, however, I don't think it's as imagina- tive as the one my doctor came up with a few years ago, while examining my symptoms of what turned out to be a pinched nerve. Noting the limited range of motion in my arm and shoulder before the pain set in, he quipped that I must have difficulty putting bras on. At the time, I thought that was the most imaginative gender-bending metaphor anyone had come up with since young Warren Harding's father told the nation's eventual worst president that he was lucky to be male, because his incapacity to say "no" would otherwise have left him perpetually pregnant (or was it rendered up the spout?). Neile: hope you manage to submit the Dalbello song to some future H*P tape. I've been curious about her music ever since I read it being described favora- bly in the complementary magazine of a record store chain (which happened to be published in Canada), but have never been able to find her recordings in this country. That and _Metro Music_ by Martha and the Muffins, which seems to be the only one of theirs I've never found on tape either as a cutout or used. Greg: Glad the band is sounding so good. I'll be sure to add the party to the list of places I wish I could afford to fly to on a whim, even after the fare wars have ended. (The upcoming rise in the effective price of the CTA weekly pass would be well worth it if the airlines would honor them.) I immediately looked at them all to see which one Happy had signed, and for a moment thought she hadn't until I saw the silver metallic writing on _Ecto_ which was such a good match for the color of the printing that it wasn't immediately obvious.
