I have discovered that many people drag out their resistance to "womyn's" music when I try to interest them in the artists discussed by the members of this fuzzy blue list. "What are you doing listening to womyn's music?" Arrghh. Enough with the spring steel labels, already. I'm continually amazed by the resistance women meet at this late date. Nordstrand is a word which jumps into my eyes like being underlined and highlighted with a text marker, as this is the name of my birthplace. It is an island in the Northsea, not that far from Denmark. What I find strange is, that I've _never_ (with this exception of course) heard of anyone whose surname is Nordstrand. Can someone tell me a bit about "Bob State"? I saw a video special about the Sugarcubes on Euro-MTV, and suddently they played something by that band, which at first made me believe that the Sugarcubes special had ended. But only until the singer joined in, and I'm absolutely sure that this was Bjork as well. There is no doubt about this voice. I've tried to find their album "Exile" but with no success. Was this a pre-Sugarcubes band? She apparently has some good straight songs in >addition to her performance pieces and humorous songs. Sounds like a good bet >to me. Beaten to the punch, as usual. From February until May I'd been meaning to ask if anyone knew anything about Meryn Caddell, whose album I'd heard a tape of whilst visiting a friend in Texas. An acquaintance of his had sent him a tape with _Angel Food For Thought_ on one side ('cept he didn't put the title of the album, just the singer's name) and a collection of Jane Siberry songs on the other side. Back in May, I was in the car with some friends, listening to the local 'alternative' station, when all of a sudden, I heard a familliar sounding song. I had _no_ idea what it was, but the name "Meryn Caddell" sprang to mind. But I couldn't imagine hearing anything by her on the radio. I asked my friends in the car if they knew, but they were all clueless as well, though a couple had heard it before. Finally the dj comes on and (for once!) gave the title and artist. I smacked my forehead in disbelief. After explaining a bit about what I remembered of the album, the driver of the car went out and bought it (at Tower, fyi). I finally made a copy of the CD about 3 weeks ago. The description of Meryn as a cross between Laurie Anderson and Sandra Bernhardt isn't bad, but it leaves out a very important (and obvious) influence: Jane Siberry. The opening cut of the album is strikingly reminiscent of "Map of the World, Part I" (my favorite JS song). It's also the most musically 'pretty'. Most of the rest of the album is spoken word, borrowing somewhat from Laurie Anderson, though Meryn has her own style of delivery, without making as much use of pauses. The album has a couple of dull tracks, but overall it's a lot of fun and well worth a listen. So, Mitch, having heard the piece on NPR, can you tell me (us) anything else about Ms. Caddell, other than the fact that she's from .ca? I've now been officially middle-aged for a week, and appear to be holding my own. I have every confidence that you, too will be able to hold your own in three years. On the other hand, I seem to recall having been able to survive three years ago about this time of year, and so I likewise have every confid- ence that you will survive this. Actually, I seem to recall that the most palpable birthday depression I have had in recent decades occurred in 1981, around the occasion of my turning 29; but you obviously survived that just fine a long time ago, so I don't think it's nearly as instructive as the other examples :-). When the announcement of Zappa's prostate cancer came out last year, I seem to recall hearing at the time that the treatment was reported to be going well. I haven't heard anything on this since. Chris Sampson said: > Eight, implicit in the above item (Fourth), cast one vote IN >FAVOR of continuing the Women's Music thread, either in this forum, or if >it DOES retreat to email, please include me. The same goes for me. NPR's piece on Meryn Caddell starts out with an excerpt from "The Sweater." It goes on to say that that song alone could make you mistake her for "the Ray Stevens of rock," but points out that she also does good ballads, one of which it excerpts. It then states that her spoken word pieces are here real signature works, playing an excerpt from "Job Application." It quotes her as saying that some of her works are fiction, but some come from experience. The correspondent observes that _Angel Food for Thought_ is the kind of album that drives record stores crazy because it's hard to classify, as is MC herself . She was born in Waterloo, and moved to Toronto in the early '80s to study art. Performance art was then becoming popular, and she got into it. She says her influences were diverse: broadway musicals, Carly Simon, Roberta Flack, camp songs, and whatever else was played in the house when she was a kid. She sees herself as an unlikely success and credits the success of "The Sweat- er" to its acknowledgement of the universal adolescent need to be like everyone else. The album was funded initially by a performance grant from a Canadian arts organization; she had free rein to do her own thing, and never really thought to produce a hit single. She's now playing small clubs, making vague plans to take on either TV or the movies, and has another single in the works about the Barbie Doll. This may or may not have saved Jeff $10 for a trans- ript or $12.50 for a tape of yesterday's _Morning Edition_ show, on which the profile ran. The song about the Bush-loving lesbian, with its male chorus, reminds me some- what of Christine Lavin's song "Sensitive New Age Guys," from the _Attainable Love_ album, in which there is a bit of business in which CL's line "who cares about my orgasm" is not met by the usual "sensitive new age guys" from the chorus. She repeats the line at least once, with no more response, until one man says "Well, we're sensitive, Christine, but we're not that sensitive." Last but least: The _Tribune_ ran a review yesterday of Melissa Etheridge's concert in Chicago over the weekend. The conclusion was that she's as good as ever when it comes to her good old hard-driving raw emotional songs, but she's drifting into ballads and other softer stuff, when it comes to which she's something of a sappy wimp (to borrow a term from someone else). The reviewer did like the opening act, though. Mitch ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
