Her husky voice and the melancholic quality of the songs (all in english) remind me a lot of Tanita Tikaram. Instrumentation is quite sparse. Main instrument is acustic guitar, supported by violin, mandolin, banjo, bass, drums and percussion. And although Tikaram's "Ancient Heart" is better, B&B shows a lot of talent and much more imagination than the following releases by Tanita. Unfortunately the CD came in a digipak which didn't include the lyrics. :( Anyway, I've listened to this album a lot in the last weeks, and I can recommend it. It's her 2nd album, but finding the 1st was unsuccessful so far. --- Peacock Palace, "Adding Wings", 1991 Peacock Palace is another Band from Berlin. The story how I found them is quite interesting. In de.music.misc, a german newsgroup, was a small discussion about female voices, and I asked people for recommendations of female singers. I dropped a couple of names of my favourites (yes, Happy was leading the list :), and a guy suggested to look out for Peacock Palace which he said, are a lot like Rainbirds with mouth-organ. This monday Bayern 3 aired a concert by "Petra Jansen and Band" which turned out to be Peacock Palace. The first song took us by surprise. We knew it! "Like a snake" was on the radio a couple of times, and we were always wondering if this was something new from Katharina Franck or Rainbirds. They are certainly coming close. Petra's voice sounds a lot like Katharina's, although she doesn't quite have the power, and the music is mainly guitar based as well. The next day I was lucky to find their album "Adding Wings", and the songs were not that surprising, as I've just hear most of them live. Has one of you heard of one of them? Karl? Dirk? ___________________________________________________________ ( "Tell me all the plans you have for the great beyond. ) ) Will you be physical again, or be a cosmic vagabond." I distinctly heard Lindsay Buckingham's voice. I thought they were playing a recording. Maybe I imagined, since it's his voice I expect to hear on that song (or maybe the singer was a talented impressionist). b) Which ever network I happened to be watching at the end of the speech (I was shifting around to see if if any network was doing anything interesting) had a commentator who made some idiotic comment about Jefferson Airplane. >the band never once covered Buffy Ste. Jeff ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 17 Jul 92 23:38:52 EDT From: kosky@saul.cis.upenn.edu (Anthony Kosky) Subject: Richard Thompson live at Penn's Landing Hi All! I just got back from seeing Richard Thompson live at Penn's Landing, Philadelphia. I only found out about the concert the day before yesterday, when I heard in mentioned on WXPN. I tried to get a group together to go, but everyone I could think of was either busy or wimped out because of the forcasted thunder and hail storms. In fact the rain gods were kind to us and, apart from a little rain as Richard came on, we were spared. Mind you, once it got dark, the stage was being lit up by lightening in the background, which certainly helped add to the atmosphear. I got there about 45 minutes early, and picked out a nice central spot on the front step in front of the stage. The support performer was someone called Willie Nelson: Ok but not terribly inspiring. Richard Thompson was his normal mixture of great, clownish humour and awesome guitar playing. In fact his humour seemed even more on form than normal. The between song banter included a charade to help the audience guess the next song, and a brief epigram on "British sex" which really seemed to hit home. The concert was shortened a little by an impending thunder storm, but was nevertheless great. As usual, when seeing Richard in a solo acoustic performance, I left asking myself why he bothers with other intruments and musicians on his albums: he really doesn't have any need for them. "But what, pray tell, has this to do with Happy Rhodes?" I hear you ask, fearing that, after All About Eve and Buffy Sainte-Marie, I have now taken to posting total irrelevancies on this list. Well I was coming to that: This concert was sponsored by WXPN as part of their Singer-Songwriter weekend. At the begining of the concert the WXPN person introducing the performers said that there would be a WXPN/World Cafe benefit held at the Mann Music Center on 17 September --- performers to be announced. At this point, somewhere in the depths of my brain, a light-bulb went Ping! and I thought "I read on ecto that Happy was invited to play at a concert at the Mann around then". So I went along to the WXPN stand after the show and spoke to WXPN's program manager. He confirmed that Happy would be performing, and said that they were in the process of finalising negotiations with 10,000 Maniacs. I mentioned that Tori Amos would be touring around then and he said that she was one of the artists that had been approached but he didn't know how things stood there. (He seemed interested when I told him that Tori would be touring the states in mid-september, but that the tour schedule was still being decided). I asked about Peter Gabriel, but he seemed to think that he would be unlikely to attend. Still the idea of Tori, Happy and 10,000 Maniacs performing at the same concert is enough to make me feel slightly giddy. -Anthony ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
