Spent an enjoyable evening last night (can you spend an evening at night?) with Steve the vagabond over at gaffa central on farwell street. It's always cool to meet roving philes although I often feel slightly awkward discussing net stuff in person (kind of like a betrayal of the sacrosanct inner society). Nonetheless, we had lots of fun. Unfortunately, Kirsten was unable to make it, but C&V were there (of course) as well as Chip Lueck, Mike Kaufman, and Charlie. And I finally got to see the infamous Sarah rolling around naked in the mud video. We also recorded our HBP selections in the gaffa control booth, completely with microphone and women's undergarments. The only thing we have yet to determine is why the white furry merow was so attracted to steve's wheels. It kept licking them and fawning them and rubbing up against them. The Courtstress would have loved it. [BTW, I have been told that SNL-like speech and quotes are taboo in these parts, but for what it's worth, I'll take WW over that horrible new Batman flick any night of the week. Did anyone understand BR? Was there a plot somewhere that I missed?] Here's to more visits from faraway ectolytes and gaffanarians in the future. Till then. -mjm (mike mendelson) ======================================================================== From: kyrlidis@athena.mit.edu Subject: Re: Steve V in The Windy City Date: Thu, 02 Jul 92 11:45:05 EDT mjm (who is *not* Charlotte stern anymore :) ) writes: >[BTW, I have been told that SNL-like speech and quotes are >taboo in these parts, I wonder who has told you this? Was there a plot somewhere that I >missed?] I haven't seen WW, (I love the skits in SNL, but to watch a full two hours of that must become tiresome :) ). BR was IMHO a very *funny* dark comedy full of sexual tension and innuendo adn magnificently staged and directed. I thought the script was hilarious and full of puns and in-jokes. The set design was awesome with its neo-nazi-like grandeur. And then there was Michelle Pfeiffer (*Schwing* :) say no more) who was absolutely amazing. I think her performance as Catwoman was her best to date. And I have seen most of her films (don't think I've seen Grease 2 :) ). Michael Keaton was also better than in the first movie darker, schizophrenic. Maybe there was no plot per se, but still if you look at the movie as pure entertainment, I think it was great! Enough said. Date: Thu, 02 Jul 92 15:37:56 -0400 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu I'm sitting by my CD player/music collection trying to decide what, if anything, I want to listen to. I start whistling a melody I really like. I have absolutely _no_ idea what it is, except that I know I own it on CD. I have to sit there and try to listen to myself whistling to figure out what it is, but I know that if I concentrate on listening too hard, I'll lose track of the melody and no longer be able to whistle it at all. Fortunately, I figured it out. It was "Shine On Crazy Diamond (part i)". If I _hadn't_ figured it out, I would have driven m'self crazy thinking about it. Jeff |Jeffrey C. A somewhat belated Happy Birthday to the list, but as most of you must have noticed by now, I'm notoriously lagging behind. Currently I'm reading digest # 258. When all this started, I was less than convinced it would lead to anything good. I teased Klaus about suddenly getting fannish about someone, he had never been before (ok, he wanted/got everything by/about KaTe he even vaguely heard of, but that didn't go as far as T-shirts or actually meeting other fans). I thought he was overdoing it and no artist could be worth so much enthusiasm. Well, as you all know, he and Happy and you people have changed my mind thoroughly, and though I still distrust very much the worshipping aspect and narrow mindedness some fannish activities can get into, there's little of this among us. Since I'm reading ECTO, I always felt that this list is not only about warm fuzzy blueness but also very much about open-mindedness. So, Jessica and all the other veterans, thanks for starting it and keeping it up! Hm, a few relativley new thoughts first, before I go back to my notes on old digests, as usual. When we went to Bruegge (Bruges to you) last month we took along a Tori tape and a Happy sampler, and actually got my brother, in whose car we were riding, to play them. He only made a dozen or so derogatory remarks throughout. He's not very interested in music, what he listens to has to have a wham-bam in it, favourites are Deep Purple, Rory Gallagher, Status Quo and other stuff along that line ... hopeless. But what surprised me very much was how bassy Happy's stuff actually is (his car stereo matches his tastes) and I liked this very much, just think of Perfect Irony. Our speakers at home have very little bass, no matter what you do to the equalizer, I even managed to tickle more out of the mini-equalizer on my walkman. Happy's always good for a surprise, and always a nice one! Did dig dig dig ... clonk! Found something! (About a month ago) Just listening to the HGP again. I didn't for a long time, this is probably only the 3rd time or so. I just have to say it again (did I say it before? I hope so!) how much I'm impressed with Jessicas cover of Kate. Angelos, at the start I wasn't too intrigued by Eleftheria, but now we've got the CD her music is growing on me, in fact meanwhile I like it very much! I'm learning a lot through you folks ... ;-) Steve v.D. said on Feb 13th: >And I'll do sort of what Vickie did earlier and feel insecure >about the way my voice sounds on tape. I've always hated the way >my voice sounds on recordings. In my head I have this deep, >warm, sort of gravelly voice that's strong but not usually loud. But you do! That's exactly how I would describe my impression of your voice on the HGP and when we talked on the phone! I know you don't, but your voice makes you "look" like a tall, strong, nice grizzly bear (the fuzzy, kuddly kind :-). BTW, I only found out afterwards from Vickies interview that Happy counts Sting among her influences, a nice surprise as I like him a lot (including the old police stuff). Although of course that means she's heard it before. Having taped our messages for the HBP last week I guess I know now how you people feel. We didn't count the takes, but there were a lot. We left it at the first one where we managed to get through our text without stumbling. Don't like MY voice on the tape, much too high and girlish (although it may make me sound younger ;). Have to sign off and go make dinner.
