Boston area Tori fans heavenly voices Back on the list ======================================================================== From: Neil K. Guy Subject: Jane Siberry article Date: Sun, 30 Jan 1994 14:20:35 -0800 (PST) This is from the Jan. 28 - Feb. 4 1994 issue of the Georgia Straight, Vancouver's free entertainment weekly. Retyped completely without permission, etcetera, etcetera. Siberry Adds Body to Her Soul Canada's queen of quirk learns to sing from below the belt. By Jillian Hull. If you look back at much of what has been written about Jane Siberry over the years - the reviews and interviews and promotional blurbs - it's hard to miss the way most writers describe Siberry and her music. She's called "quirky", "ethereal", "cerebral" and "enigmatic." (I think I may have used a few of those words myself.) She's also labelled "eccentric", "inscrutable", and "introspective". So when I called Siberry in Toronto before her tour to promote her latest album, _When I Was a Boy_, there was something I wanted to know. "Does it bug you," I asked, "when people describe you this way?" "No, that doesn't bother me," she said matter-of-factly. "You either have a whammy-bar personality or you don't. But you know what I really hate? I hate it when someone says that I giggle. I don't giggle. That drives me up the wall. The closest I come is maybe a derisive chuckle." And although I can't say for sure that I heard any derisive chuckles - or giggling, for that matter - as I replayed our conversation, I can see how someone might think they remembered a giggle. There is an almost childlike quality to Siberry's speaking voice. Not childish; far from it. Rather, it's somehow daringly innocent of artifice, especially given the hard-sell, self-promoting aspects of the music business. It is, of course, that same transparency one hears in her singing voice as it bends and breaks and arches over the complex alloy of emotions and sensations she reveals in virtually all of her songs. But with the release of _WIWAB_, something most Siberry fans will be hearing for the first time is a voice that fairly throbs with fevered sexuality. There are times when this album is so raw it's a bit like hearing people making love in the next hotel room. "What you're hearing is that I'm singing from my crotch, as one friend so rudely put it," said Siberry, who returns to town for two shows per night at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre next Friday and Saturday (February 7 and 8). "Know that what you're hearing is someone who's gotten rid of a lot of baggage and removed a lot of tension from her body. I'm much more grounded. I'm walking this earth more solidly than I ever have, so my voice does sound lower. What is has is more body. Literally." That may seem odd - this huskier, sexier sound - given that, lyrically, WIWAB is particularly attuned to love and spiritual transcendence. Consider the song titles: "Love is Everything," "Temple," "An Angel Stepped Down," "Sweet Incarnadine," and "The Gospel According to Darkness." But with this album Siberry has elaborated a theme that effectively couples, as it were, spirituality and sexuality. The body as temple, love as salvation; it's all there in a sort of diversified, polymorphous vision of sexuality. "Oh," Siberry groaned, "I fall in love all the time. Though not necessarily with a person. People don't usually speak about it this way, but I read something about women from other cultures long ago where they would be able to have an orgasm as they regarded the shape of a tree or a rock. That's the first time I'd heard it somewhere else, the idea that the erotic world that's available is limitless. Lately, I've done some videos in which I'm using mostly women in them, so they're very warm and erotic. But it's been interesting, because some people were calling them homoerotic. But what they're really seeing is the natural gift women have to connect with erotic energy. Period." Yet even as she articulates thoughts completely off the mainstream grid, Siberry brings a surprising precision to most conversations. As she was speaking about women and erotic energy, she stopped abruptly in mid-sentence and asked; "Are you taping or writing this? Taping? Oh, good." There are times - let's be blunt - when Siberry can sound as flaky and uncritical as a New Age acolyte. And there are other times when she sounds as exacting as your tax accountant. It is at once surprising and not surprising at all to learn that before turning to music full-time, Siberry was a science major, getting her degree in microbiology from the University of Guelph. "Well, just a science degree, period, was one of the most valuable ways of learning how to learn, training the mind to input information in a more specific way than normal. It put within me a precision that I'd never had before, and I was relieved to understand the physical universe in a much less mysterious way. As a matter of fact, as science has caught up to the esoteric sciences and they're finally able to describe physically what people have always sensed - you know, energy fields and all that - I'm able to couple the two, which I find extremely valuable. Partly to discriminate between high-quality material and people who are just blowing." Siberry's background in the micro-aspects of the physical world is likewise evident in some of the signature aspects of her music: in her lush, intricate arrangements, in her unerring attention to the small and minute. "Well, I know when I move away from it, the quality goes to hell. When I was at Real World Studios with Peter Gabriel, that week of collaboration with a whole bunch of musicians, the vibration in the valley got so high through the week it was affecting my writing. More and more, it felt out of place to write too specifically. I was moved to write on a more universal level. But my writing took on a highfalutin', proselytizing quality that I've always rejected in my work, which told me that it was an unnatural high for me - that I just have to stay where I am, whatever I am, and, for me, it's just right to look at small things, to sort of kneel before the universe within something small." If Siberry sounds comfortable with the ground on which she now stands, it is, nonetheless, a hard-won confidence. Despite the critical success of her last album, _Bound by the Beauty_, it disappeared rather quickly from the airwaves, and despite wide praise and acceptance by her musical peers, a rowdy crowd of 7,000 booed her off the stage at a concert in Scotland last year. In the three years between _WIWAB_ and her last album, stories of great success followed by strange failures swirled around her like fall leaves. Though Siberry self-produced this album until the final stages and insists that it is "a Jane Siberry album if ever there was one," two producers, Michael Brook and Brian Eno, were also brought in at the end. Still, of her experience working with Eno - who is a great fan of _BBTB_, even having written her a gushy fan letter - Siberry remains equivocal. "When I worked with Brian, I sort of gave myself up to him. But in a couple of cases with the vocals, I thought I was mumbling and they had to be clearer, so I wanted to redo them. But Brian's not big on vocals. I think he's afraid of vocals. They're so emotional and frustrating and can be very time-consuming if somebody wants to do them over and over again. So, he wanted to use the sequences I'd done in two hours when I wrote "Sail Across the Water," and I'd done them really quickly and carelessly, knowing it was just a demo. I thought he was going to work from scratch with real musicians. "But when it came down to it, he was very busy and that never happened. So I would madly try to upgrade them on lunch break and after he'd go home at seven, because he had to tuck in his little girls and he hates working on a computer and he's always swearing at it. So I would just stay and do my own work when he was gone - bring it up to some level so it wasn't so sloppy. Bringing in people at the end... well, it was very valuable and I'm glad I did - there's lots of great stuff that happened from working with other people - but I also learned that I'm a really good producer myself. I like the way I see things and actually can do things quite 'no fuss, no muss.'" If Siberry's honesty sounds almost intemperate, given the backslapping hoopla of most publicity tours ("Oh, he was the greatest; I loved working with so-and-so, an incredible experience!") this may well be the profile she has earned within the industry as well. When I ask her about the song Shawn Colvin wrote about her, a somewhat disturbing song called "Kill the Messenger" in which Siberry is cast as a some kind of visionary who has to pay the price for delivering the truth, Siberry does *not* giggle. "Well," she says, *possibly* chuckling derisively, "I guess I wish she'd said *tip* the messenger." -- 49N 16' 123W 7' / Vancouver, BC, Canada / neil_k_guy@sfu.ca ======================================================================== Date: Sun, 30 Jan 94 17:47:27 EST From: jessica Subject: Re: She'll be here, but she'll be ecto > > Now, to sum up what happened at USENIX: I met the moderator > > of the list from which ecto was born (gaffa/love-hounds), > > Bill Wisner. > :-) I don't know....rec.music.gaffa went down...ecto digests > disappeared....earthquakes in California...cyclones in Australia... > lordy knows what would happen if Jessica(ecto), Bill(love-hounds), > AnthonyK(rdt), AnthonyB(fte), AnthonyH(margot) and some of the > others got together at one time! Date: Mon, 31 Jan 1994 18:35:01 +1100 Well, here we go with another un-lurking post - now that I'm on the loose-mail format, I should be able to keep up with, and respond to, ecto a bit better. The sarah-list is going nicely - theres been around 60 or so subscriptions since it started, which is many more than I expected. I'm working on a digest-mode for the list, that should be ready soon-ish. Any other Anthonys (Anthonies) out there that feel like starting a mailing list? As both AnthonyK and AnthonyH have pointed out, theres the potential for some truly amazing confusion here :-) One of my workmates came in today with something he found for me last night - a Jane Siberry poster, advertising her upcoming concert! It was at the restaurant he and some friends were at, he saw it, said 'Gee, I think Anthony* would like that' and convinced the owner to let him have it. Yay! * thats Anthony-who-is-writing-this-post-and-maintains-the-Sarah-list, not Anthony-who-maintains-the-Margot-list, or Anthony-who-maintains-the- Tori-list. Everybody clear on that? :) I rang radio station JJJ last night, to try (again) to get them to play some new Tori (I want to hear it! *sulk*) but the DJ said she didnt have access to the CD library at that time of night, so she played something by someone, I think they were called Kirsten Hirsh? The spelling is almost certainly wrong. Anyway, it was quite good - anyone heard anything about this person? *hugs* to all that I spoke to on IRC over the weekend - I was on and off at all sorts of strange times, spoke to a reasonable number of ectophiles. Its good that IRC is a text-only interface, sometimes. Last night I was sitting at home, typing away. I'd just got back from the beach, and had had a long soak in the bath (saltwater + long hair == ouchie ouchie knots mangled hair) (and sunburned a smidgin) (gosh, I type like I talk, lots of little digressions all over the place :) so I was dressed in a baggy old tracksuit, wearing my 'giant feet' slippers, and with a towel wrapped around my hair. It must have looked appalling :-) I found a copy of David Lynch/Angelo Baladamenti's "Industrial Symphony No.1" for $5 on video the other day. About half or so of the tracks feature Julee Cruise, the others are a bizzare mixture of things, typical David Lynch style, but a bit wierder than his more mainstream efforts (Twin Peaks, and such.) For fans of Julee, its probably worth picking up, if you see it cheap, otherwise I wouldnt bother. enough for now... Sure it's a Happy song, she wrote the music. I don't know if she collaborated on the lyrics, or if DS wrote them all. In any case, it's the first and only time she's ever collaborated on anything with anybody other than Kevin (as far as I know or remember). Maybe Happy will talk about Dave Snyder in her autobiography (yeah, right) but until then, all I can pass along is that he was a long-ago friend of hers who was unfortunately having massive mental problems himself at the time they hung around together. He (or, in some cases, characters inspired by him) has popped up in lots of Happy's songs. Off From Out From Under Me ("I knew a man who was very odd...") Under And Over the Brink ("on the brink of insanity I see my friend...") Asylum Master ("the living breathing corpse...") and I suspect, others too, but I've never asked her about them. I know they were very close at one time, and he inspired her and helped her in lots of ways, but I don't feel qualified (or comfortable) to talk about specifics. Here again, is a case of Happy writing and recording songs not having any idea that they'd be heard by lots of other people, and I don't know exactly what she herself would say about them. No way can I speak for her. (Even though I do anyway sometimes) "Not you, or her, can say who I am" HTR :-) > Further on in the post: > > > I realize that Ecto probably would be a lot bigger if the > > non-Happy/music content and volume were lowered. That's a good idea, but it would be extra work for someone. The current situation seems to be the best. People who can handle Ecto, stay with Ecto. People who can't, still read my postings about new releases, play dates, etc., elsewhere. This seems to me to provide the perfect excuse for another European EctoFest as I imagine a number of Ectophiles will make their way to the UK that weekend. As this weekend is during our Easter vacation I will have very few constraints on my time and should be able to cope with the organisation, so I'd propose that it happens chez moi in Cambridge on Saturday 9th April. There could be an event on Friday evening for early arrivals also. I can accommodate a number of people in relative comfort at my home but I could also arrange for rooms in my college (just a couple of minutes walk away) to be available at very cheap rates. It takes an hour by train from Cambridge to central London, so getting to the Convention on Sunday shouldn't be too arduous a journey. Cambridge is reachable from all three London airports by bus/coach. The journey takes 3 hours from Gatwick, 2 hours from Heathrow and 45 minutes from Stansted. The main Cambridge bus depot is a couple of minutes walk from my home (I live pretty centrally). You can also do the journey by train (via London) but it's probably only quicker for arrivals at Gatwick. (It may also be possible to arrange to meet people at airports depending on arrival times etc.) So, who's up for this? Three methods are available for getting the tapes: * Establish a cassette account. In other words, send me a check to cover the cost of cassettes, packaging, and postage. Put in as much as you want, not necessarily just to cover a single order (though you can do that, too). After your first order, anytime you want a cassette, you just e-mail me, and I fill your order as soon as possible without your mailing me anything. In this case, I would dip into my own supply of medium-quality chrome cassettes which I've ordered in bulk (Thanks, Mitch!). Accounts can be opened or closed at any time. Put in as much as you want, as more tapes will be added. * Establish a cassette account, as in 1, except that I will purchase whatever type of tape you specifically request. Obviously the cost of the tape will be higher, though the packaging and postage will be the same. * Send me the cassettes you want to put the music on (C-90 or C-100) along with money to cover packaging and return postage. I will copy the tapes you request and return them. Consider opening an account, as it will save you having to mail an order, let alone the cassettes. * How much will it cost? If you use my stash of cassettes, the cost for the cassettes is currently $1.22 each. The packaging for mailing the cassettes is between $0.35 and $0.62, depending on the number of tapes mailed. The postage varies according to the number of tapes and the destination. So far, it has ranged between $0.98 and $16.70. Big help, eh? If you wish a more precise estimate of your postage costs, I can give you one via e-mail. US orders will be mailed book rate, taking five to seven days. Non-US orders will be air mailed, taking about seven to ten days. As for foreign payments, so far everyone has sent either American cash or a money order denominated in US currency. I believe that I can handle anything denominated in US currency, and probably any cashier's check (a check drawn on the bank's rather than a personal account). * Where do I send the order? To me. My mailing address: Doug Burks, 2036 West Plum Street C7, Fort Collins CO 80521 USA Orders will be processed in the order I get them, with special dispensation for foreign orders. Please note that I will not process any e-mail orders unless you have an open cassette account. * Anything else I should know? Just a few odds and ends: If I make any mistakes, I will replace the tape for free. I intend to post a progress report on the dubbing operation regularly. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! Believe it or not I'm in work only a few hours after landing at Heathrow (hero or what). I'd just like to do a few thank-you's (briefly 'cos I should be working!). Thanks to Chip for picking me up, dropping me off and generally showing me around Chicago. Vickie for showing me the cool thing, taking me CD shopping (this was a *serious* shopping trip!) and hosting the ecto party (where interesting fuzzy blue drinks were consumed in great quantities). and finally a great big thank you to HM Customs who have raised the limit for stuff you can bring in from 32 pounds to 136 pounds which made my CD haul even cheaper. Laura ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 31 Jan 94 14:13:13 PST From: Neal Copperman Subject: heavenly voices I got this really cool CD set last week, which I listened to 1 disc of and promptly lent to Jeff Hanson, who has now heard it more than me, has all the info about it, and ordered his own. (Perhaps the completely unsubtle nudge will get you guys a bit more of a review.) Heavenly Voices is a 2 CD set from Projekt:darkware. It's a sampler of ethereal music and has such recent ecto-mentionables as Moon 7 Times and Love Spirals Down and scads of others. It cost $24, which seemed a steal for 2 packed discs with very nice packaging. If anyone cares, I can eventually post ordering info, or Jeff can now. On an initial listen, a lot of the music blended together, but it blended together in a wonderful way. Looks like we are hours away from the new Tori release. We are lucky to have a funky place called Discafe in La Jolla, that is open til 2am on weekdays and 3 am on weekends. The first time I went in there you couldn't find anything for under $16, but now it looks like they enlarged the lounge area, decreased the disc-space, and lowered the prices. I guess coffee brings in more revenue than discs. I guess I didn't mention it is a cofee shop, with occasional live music and dj's, and it has listening booths set up all around so you can listen to the discs. Oddly, it makes for the least sociable coffeehouse I have ever seen (bunches of people sitting around with headphones on), but it's still a pretty cool idea. Thanks bunches to NeIlg for the Jane article. I thought it was fantastic. Today we had a Northern Norway Ecto Party (2. of that kind actually) Testing some new loudspeakers (Snell Q) and mainly listening to UTP but also Warpaint and Equipoise. UTP is just incredible - I just love it and wonder if I'll get some sleep at all tonight!! :) Ok, the lab is soon closing so I'll write more tomorrow ...
