It's a pretty excellent film, and very well edited. I recommend it on its own merits, though as somebody who's read a lot of the stories it's supposed to be based on, I have to say that it's a poor Raymond Carver adaptation. Altman takes the bare bones of these stories, ignores a *lot* of Carver's subtle points, and then makes his own thing. That, and you have to be aware that it's very much about white "suburban" LA angst, and thus ignores a lot of what's going on in LA right now... and also makes for some really weak stuff. Like the Annie Ross/Lori Singer thread, the only one not based on a Carver story, and the one that, in my opinion, sucks the most. Still, you will be entertained, and most of the performances are good -- some, like Waits, Lemmon, Chris Penn, and Anne Archer, are excellent; others, like the aforementioned Ross and Singer, and Andie McDowell, really started to get on my nerves (and since McDowell was supposed to be sympathetic, that was a minor weak point). You won't regret seeing it, by any means. Ron "now you may ask, how did I get thirty feet of rope in prison?" The waterboys has become much like Mike Scott's private band. Mike wanted to depart from the influences of Celtic music, but other members disagreed so it led to the reorganization? Anyway, 'Dream Harder' is a big disappointment. Most songs are 60's rock like, very flat. The focus is not clear. These would be 1. The right to life 2. The protection of individual liberty 3. Guy Subject: Little Story. Date: Fri, 28 Jan 1994 01:25:23 -0800 (PST) Well, it's not really a story actually, more of an anecdote. And not a particularly gripping one either, but I thought I'd post it to ecto since there may be folk out there who might find it marginally interesting. :) Those who don't should hit "d" now. Of course, the trick is to figure out if you're going to like my anecdote before I relate it to you. So my housemate asked me if I could have a look at her answering machine today. Apparently it's been acting in a very unruly fashion and has made all incoming messages sound like they've been recorded underwater. So I dutifully had a look at it and while I was fiddling with the thing and adjusting the angle of the record/playback head she mentioned that she'd bought it second-hand off Teddy Borowiecki. Now who, you may ask, is that? Well he's the gentleman who has played keyboards and accordion on a number of k. d. lang and Jane Siberry albums. Wow! Just think! If it was Teddy Borowiecki's answering machine, then in all likelihood messages from k. d. and Jane have been *recorded* by that machine! My hands trembled at the very thought! It looks like an ordinary answering machine, but looks can be deceptive! This is an ordinary answering machine that has recorded the words of *Goddesses*! Probably. Anyway, that's my anecdote. I hope nobody found it too trivial, but if so full refunds are available at the door. And for what it's worth I wasn't able to do much to it as I don't have the right tools. So, I'm off to bed now. I walked into a local record store to see what Happy Rhodes/Tori Amos they had. I liked the Tori Amos selection, good Bjrok selection, loads of Kate Bush, Jane Siberry and Julia Hatfield. Looked under "H" while I was in that section and no Happy. Went to "R" and no Rhodes. Well, this guy came up to me and, fro the way he was talking, I think he was either the manager or the owner. He wanted to know if there was something he could help me find. I told him I was relly looking for some Happy Rhodes. He'd never heard of Happy Rhodes but said he'd check on his database. After a few moments he came back and told me he had looked for all Happy R and found nothing. I thanked him, answered a question about Under the Pink and went on my merry way. A few moments later the thought crossed my mind that most databases list individuals last name first. I approached him and asked him if that was the case. Once I said it he replied, "Happy Rhodes is a person?" I said, "Yup, look under Rhodes, Happy." He checked an 6 of the 7 Happy CDs popped up. He gave me a printout and assured me that he could order any of them and they would be in 1-2 days later. At that time I thought about asking him for an application to work there, but decided against it. We traded names (We're both Steves) and I left. That was Saturday. Today, Thursday, there was an add in the paper from that same store looking for someone with retail sales experience and musical knowledge. I had a cow when I read that ad. That night I showed him I had computer knowledge (question asked on their application) when I told him to check for Rhode, Happy. I showed him I had musical knowledge when I asked for an artist with 7 CDs he'd never heard of before *AND* gave an opinion on UTP, which I mentioned I've heard most of it. Now I'm nothing but a name on an application with bad handwriting. :( Oh well, I can always hope I get to the interview stage. I did put in an application on the first day the ad ran, which is a plus I think. I'm also thinking of heading up there tomorrow and seeing if that guy is there. The problem is there are 100+ names in the list so you might have missed it! :) I believe even after Karl Wallinger set up his own band, he still had some connections with the Waterboys. The real break-up should be sometime before Mike Scott decided to make 'Dream Harder.' Several members left the group. The best way is still to post the question to rec.music.celtic. You may get better answers there. As for 'Room to Roam,' actually it's not such a bad album. It pretty much follows the style of 'Fisherman's Blues.' It may not have the views as broad as what 'Blues' has, but the theme is still very consistent and pleasant. Waterboys' Celtic rock is still second to none. The notes from her self titled album say: "All songs written by Eleanor McEvoy and Published (c) 1991 ELEANOR McEVOY: Vocals, Acoustic Guitar, Piano, Hammond, Keyboards, Harmonium, Violin" Now here are my opinions for what they are worth. (Not much I'll admit. I allow all kinds of pop singers into my Goddess category.) Eleanor doesn't have a great voice like Happy Rhodes. Her voice isn't unpleasant or weird, it just lacks the tremelo of a singer who has practiced for 10 years. But the music is quite catchy and endearing. Also I should say for ectophiles who like to analyze music lyrics closely that Eleanor addresses some women's issues like depression ("Only a Woman's Heart") and stillbirth ("Leave Her Now.")
