Thus, I will prove my ignorance and post this to the list in general. Disappear Fear has three things out (that I know of) They are: Deep Soul Diver (which is OK) Echo My Call (which is FANTASTIC) Live at the Bottom Line (I don't know) All three are available via SILO a music service that our bookstore uses. I've heard them described as sounding like early Indigo Girls (on this list and elsewhere) but I don't like any Indigo Girls and really like df. I can see the comparison but df is IMHO much more interesting. I still think the cranberries "Linger" has a d sound or feel but will withdraw this if challenged (I'm feeling wimpy this week). Neal Cooperman(did I spell this correctly?) seems to know much more about them. They have something new coming but are waiting until one gives birth??? Last time they were here only one of the two women came because the other was about to multiply (or perhaps subtract?). And no, I don't like df better than the indigo girls just because I've seen df live, I've seen ig live too. brad -- bhutchin@vdoe386.vak12ed.edu There's some real people in the world and some who are pretend. --Robyn Hitchcock ======================================================================== Subject: Kate on NPR Morning Edition tomorrow? Sometime ago, this and the band name 10 cc were the subject of etymolog- ical speculation in these pages. I heard the same plug that Dan did for Kate's appearance (or whatever) on _Morning Edition_ tomorrow. Nice to know I'm not the only NPR addict around daily posting time :-). The tapes for Meredith, Angelos and Brian are now in the mail. For taking the trouble to lug the tapes up to the neighborhood post office up the street from the branch library, I got to take in the neat WPA mural of the history of Chi- cago that hangs above the windows. I even saw mailmen delivering stuff, giving me reassurance that I might actually find something in today's incoming snail- mail. I may have been on a roll that way ever since yesterday, when the email that Jens sent me over a week ago finally came in :-). Before _All Things Considered_, of course, is _Fresh Air_. Today Ken Tucker, their rock critic, expounded on how he'd dragged his feet on listening to his promo copy of WIWAB, because he had not been particularly impressed with Jane's previous stuff. But he finally ran out of excuses, played the thing, and was mesmerized. He says he'll now review Jane's future albums with dispatch. Tucker also waxed rhapsodic about an album called _Tuesday Night Music Club_ by Sheryl Crow, calling it things on the order of a state-of-the-art version of Joni Mitchell, and the _Court and Spark_ for the 90s. By an ironic coincidence I went for a browse in Blackout Records en route to the library, and picked up that very album on tape for $1.99, along with a cassingle of "60 Second Critic" by Brenda Kahn and Dave Pirner, and a CD by a band called 700 Miles, which the owner had recommended highly, for $3.99. By another coincidence, the window of the vacated Southport Department Store a few doors north had touted used tapes and CDs for sale, inquire within. I did, and ended up buying a CD by one Amy Shoemaker, called _The Trap and Bait_, for $5. I subsequently asked the owner of Blackout who was occupying that space; she said that The Drovers were living in it pending its remodeling for other uses (possibly a theater). The bottom line: I apparently have bought a used CD off The Drovers. All in all, a vintage day for ironic coincidences :-). (Almost forgot: Blackout also had a couple of used cassettes of the new Melissa Ferrick album for $3, which I didn't get because I already have it on CD--Tim, your swap-disk should be in the mail soon. Linda writes WRT an old excerpt from one of my posts, included in someone else's old post: >wait. i'm confused. the french call french bread italian bread while >the rest of the world calls french bread commonwealth of massachusetts? Proof positive that whenever somebody tries to interpret one of my flights of fancy in these pages, anything is possible :-). Like they said in _The Music Man_: you gotta know the territory. Philip writes WRT my reference to winter clothing for Christmas: >winter clothing?? Mea culpa. I was writing in a hurry, and forgot to take the southern hemispher e into consideration. Thanks to Brad for posting the Disappear Fear info. Usually, when I pursue records by artists (I just caught myself typing "pursue artists" initially, but given the disrepute that celebrity stalkers are in these days :-) ) whom I hear for the first time in stores without knowing who they are I'm not disappointed. I'll have to dig out my Indigo Girls albums to see if they really sound similar. Now if only I had time to read the IG digest I sub- scribed to last week :-). Happy birthday to the Clinton presidency. Wonder if Rush has expressed the hope for further severe winter weather, now that only essential federal work- ers are supposed to come in ? :-) Mitch ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 20 Jan 94 18:28:13 EST From: WretchAwry Subject: Re: where's love-hounds? New recordings are being worked on right now in Nashville, with occasional breaks for performances, many of them just Sonia. (The core of df is sisters Sonia and Cindy Frank, plus a band that has been with them for a year or two.) I just found out yesterday that Sonia was doing a solo show in Santa Cruz on Jan 15. Oh well. The new music will be released by Rounder, while the other stuff is on their own disappear records. I can get addresses if anyone wants to order anything direct. I first heard all there music repeatedly live, and it is hard for me to judge the quality of the albums. (Any comments Jeff H?) I think the Live album is definitely worth getting, though the recording is a little iffy. There are 5 studio songs (some repeated from live songs) at the end. Before the band (and older versions of the band) came out, there was just Sonia and Cindy, and they got a lot of I Girls comparisons. I think they are appropriate, but not overwhelming. I still don't hear any Cranberries there, but certainly don't require Brad to withdraw his opinion just because I have repeatedly disagreed with it. (I also liked, from the first listen until now, Jane Siberry's "The Waitress", and all of Borders, and have tried and failed repeatedly to get into Sarah McLachlin's Solace (or whichever one has Vox on it).) Cindy is indeed pregnant, but is reported to be staying with the band. I will post tour dates if I ever get the chance. While I recommend the albums, I would say don't miss a chance to see them live. A quick check of the bins yeilded quite a few Jane Siberry CDs and a few Hatfield CDs as well. Went over to the R's and there were no Happy Rhodes. So I asked the guy about it and he checked the database and found nothing. He told me he searched under all "Happy R". After a few moments I asked if he listed individual singers last name first... His response, "It's a person?" Hehehe.. I told him to check under Rhodes and he was surpised when 9 listings came up (3 of them are tape & CD).
