So I figured after sitting here in Lovely Upstate New York and reading all of your messages while drinking hot coffee, that I would finally actually type something and attempt to send it to the net. I am rather new at all this Internet stuff myself, but no stranger to computers. I live in Niskayuna, NY which is the next door neighbor to Schenectady, and I play in a couple local bands, so i am familiar with the local music scene. I started hanging out in a place called the "Last Exit Cafe" in Troy, and it was there that I got hooked up with a band of fine musicians that go by the moniker "Mitch Elrod's Swim Team." Of course, you people probably know the history from here. Kevin Bartlett used to play with this same group of guys in a project called ThoughtCrime. My first experience with Happy Rhodes was that she was there, acting as the photograper. This was back when Kevin was first thinking about producing these guys. I saw that one person here has mentioned the Elrod Disc, which is very good, and these guys are great live. I see em almost every show. If you need a taste of Mitch's voice, then check out "A Stranger in this World" on Happy's Warpaint CD. I was lucky enough to be in the audience for Happy's Albany Show, so some of you may have even seen me there. That was a good time. So I am going to sign off for now, but maybe in the future I can be coerced to tell stories of when Happy, Kevin, Me, The Swim Team's Rhythm Section, Mike Bassett, and my Harmonica Player Henry all moved Mitch in a Ryder truck on a really snowy day to Albany. I am not trying to start a discussion. If you're allergic to religion or Christianity, please fast forward. This letter is a bit cranky, since the subject hits close to home, so if you can't deal with that, please fast forward. You have been warned. Thank you]. [Hey! Where did everybody go? :) ] No matter what you claim, you cannot take Christianity out of Christmas. The name itself literally means "Mass of Christ", and "mass" is the Eucharist/Communion, a intrinsically Christian rite, so even replacing "Christ" with "X" doesn't rid you of Christianity. If you are non- Christian, why are you celebrating Christmas, in any shape form or fashion? I don't celebrate your holidays, so why do you celebrate mine? Make up your own holiday, if you feel left out. Yes, I am very well aware that December 25th was chosen as Christmas to coincide with the Roman Saturnalia, and it's a fact certainly not hidden from any Christian. A close reading of the Christmas story as set down in the Bible makes it clear that his birthday has to be in the spring. The date was knowingly chosen so that the celebration would go unnoticed and thus unpunished during the times of Roman persecution, not out of any attempt at historic accuracy. By the time Christianity was adopted by the Roman emperor (the worst day in Christian history, in my opinion), the December date had the huge inertia of over 300 years of tradition. Yes, Easter is a holier day than Christmas, but that doesn't invalidate Christmas' religious importance, any more than celebrating Martin Luther King Day on his birthday rather than on the date of his murder does. Many Christian holidays and symbols have been hijacked by secular and pseudo-religious groups, and I fight to get them back. For Christmas, secular commercial interests have turned Christmas into the biggest money-maker in history, turned a spiritual day into a celebration of unbridled materialism. Conservative politicians are trying (successfully, too :( ) to hijack for purely political reasons the religion that invented the separation of church and state. Too many television evangelists sell a distorted Christianity just to line their own pockets. Groups within Christianity are trying to enforce their petty-minded views, seeing limits in who God's unbounded love can reach, who can be a full member of the Christian family, who God can call into the Christian ministry. The Christian church is in deep crisis, and I, for one, want to pull it back on track. Believe me, there is nothing I want more than to remove Christianity from its huge secular dominance, maybe even make it dangerous to be a Christian again. The Politically Correct movement is certainly doing its best for the latter. Keep it up! :) Leave Christmas to us Christians -- please!?! I enjoy having a holiday and giving and recieving presents on Dec 25. But if non-christians stopped calling it Christmas I would be happy about it for the reasons you pointed out... "Christmas" is a christian celebration, however I don't think people will stop calling it Christmas if they are not christians as it has been called tthat by all for a long long time... Dec 25 is a public holiday with many traditions attached... I will continue tto think of the day as a special one, if not for tthe same reasons as you. And yes I will probably still call it Christmas too... If you as a christian can celebrate the day as a religious one then that is what matters. I, as a non-christian, celebrate it also, and I think the two celebrations can co-exist happily, as long as we respect each other's reasons for doing so - you for Christmas, me for a tradional holiday > Leave Christmas to us Christians -- please!?!
