Having had a bit of surplus time this weekend I gave Fumbling Towards Ecstacy another try and read the lyrics. Now the booklet is difficult to read, with all that hand writing, so I thought it would be easiest and most useful if I'd transcribe them. The effort follows below. Now for my new opinion on Fumbling: musically it still has to grow (and is doing so with every listening) to reach Solace and Touch, but I now understand Meth when she says that the lyrics are so strong. You're right. And if you look at both, lyrics and music, together, then you see that they fit perfectly. Maybe it's similar as it was for me with Kate Bush's The Kick Inside. Before having read (and understood) the lyrics I never liked that song. Now it's one of those I like most. I think about half of it is great, but a lot of it sounds very cluttered. Too many instruments and a muddy mix take away from the pretty voice and clever lyrics. I didn't find this happening with Kite, which I think is a superior album (but one I have had longer too). The parts that I like make a great short album. How does Titanic Days compare? I also have been listening to Over the Rhine's "`til We have Voices" (I think that's what it was called.) They were selling it when they opened for Squeeze. It is music they did in 90 and 91. I have been really impressed with this disc. It grows on me more and more with each listen. I get a slight feeling of Edie Brickell in the voice, but it doesn't sound that much like anyone else. There is a song called "Paul and Virginia" that is incredible. Is there some well known Paul and Virginia this song could be about? There is a picture (or daguerotype, I think) in the booklet called Paul & Virginia, and it could be that it was just spun out of the picture, with no other information behind it. Also, this CD is one of the prettiest packages I have bought in a long time. I am definitely going to pick of "Patience" soon. Jessica, you bought it the same time I got this one, any thoughts?? I've listened to the Story's Angel at my Table a bit more, and like it a little bit better. This was still a major disappointment for me, and I still find it to be a little to formless and meandering, and I am not really excited by the voices. Still, I have come to enjoy some of the songs, which is more than I expected from initial listens and the concert. Tonight I am going to see Sheryl Crow, whose stuff I have never heard but sounded interesting. Anyone have any info on her? I spent my childhood all over the map - including the southern UK, Quebec, California, BC and Alberta - and I have *never* heard of this "ally ally" business before. All news to me. I remember hearing the "Ready or not, here I come" phrase for the first time in North America - I don't remember children saying that in England, but maybe that was just me. What about other children's games? Did you say "tisha-tisha" or "aa-tishoo-aa-tishoo" or "husha husha" at the end of "Ring Around the Rosy," that thrivingly popular and continually creepy and eerie children's game? :) And I say "pop" and not "soda" as well, like most Canadians. :) - Neil K. -- 49N 16' 123W 7' / Vancouver, BC, Canada / neil_k_guy@sfu.ca ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 10 Jan 94 21:34:34 -0600 From: vnozick@merle.acns.nwu.edu (Valerie Nozick) Subject: New Tori single Yup, that's a *new* Tori single....forgive me if this has been mentioned here already. I just got my e-mail account here in Chicago set up! The single's called 'God' (but you already new that...) and I picked up a promo CD copy of it used yesterday. It also includes 'Home on the Range' with additional lyrics by Tori and 'The Waitress', another album track. The cover features this scrumptious picture of our red-haired goddess, with a window reflection in the foreground. She is wearing a white top and is facing the camera. To her front right are some testtubes and a flask, but these blend in with the window reflection. The CD box has a sticker on it: Reports Jan. 10. So I got it a day earlier than I should have! I guess the CD was meant only for radio stations. Tough. So what do I think of the songs? My first reaction was ugh, Tori succumbed to the sophmore jinx, but the most I listen to it, the more I like it. This definitely is a step beyond a piano-only LE style...There's no instrument listing, but God starts with screeching sounds (to my untrained ear, I would say guitar licks and snare) After a few listens, 'God' becomes the natural step in Tori's growth as an artist. The Waitress is less poppy than God, but much more interesting. It starts with machine sounds (reminds me of 'Innocence and Science' by Spandau Ballet), and then Tori's beautiful voice. It turns into an odd cacophony of factory-type sounds and Tori's wailings. It's hard to describe, but it's great. 'Home on the Range' is just Tori with piano. Actually, I'm a little disappointed in this. She seems to be trying too hard to impose her stark style onto a traditional folk song. I can't make out all of the additional lyrics, but they seem interesting. It's just odd to go from the bizarreness jarring of 'God' to quiet folksy to the bizarrity of TW. If I'm not paying attention, there's no need to skip over HotR, but if I'm listening, I might as well program it out. If anyone wants, I can type in the lyrics to 'God'. BTW, it seems to me that 'God' is an odd choice for a first single. I guess Atlantic is giving up the idea of a nationwide hit single and going after the coasts (and Chicago, I hope). The title just won't fly in the south, where you can't even mutter the word without getting nasty stares. ==> Valerie NEW ADDRESS: vnozick@merle.acns.nwu.edu "I never knew what a big difference there was between 30 degrees and 20 degrees..." -- Valerie, on almost any day in Chicago. ======================================================================== From: brianb@netcom.com (Brian Bloom) Subject: Re: Ally ally oxenfree Date: Mon, 10 Jan 1994 20:25:51 -0800 (PST) I actually used to think it was " Ally Ally All Come free" ..but then I'm usually wrong.
