Apparently I was the only soul hardy enough to make it, but Holly and the visiting Neil-from-Vancouver invited me in anyway and fed me lasagne and Canadian candy bars. Yum! I really enjoyed meeting Holly and Neil, who are both delightful people. We watched Kate Bush and Tori Amos videos, talked about ectophilic music, computers, and Canada vs. the U.S., and (here comes the part that'll make you wish you could have been there!) listened to a few cuts from the forthcoming Tori Amos album, "Under the Pink." All agreed that they were absolutely marvelous. I'm compiling a best-of-'93 list so maybe I'll post that this weekend. If I can introduce y'all to a bit of trivia: I used to be involved with an access tv show in Austin called White Noise. (Did camera and control room work for the show) Robert Rodriguez was a good friend of some of the guys on the show (in fact, he filmed much of the movie with our cameras) so he world-premiered the movie on our White Noise show. Apparently someone bootlegged our presentation and showed it in Mexico (it still had our logo in the corner). We also did the subtitles for that version. (They were professionaly redone for the commercial release) This was long before all the interest in his movie. He was as much surprised by the popularity as he was. He was offered a multi million dollar contract afterward. (The original only cost him about $7000 total to make) Robbie also did cartoon work in The Daily Texan (U.T.s daily paper) and compiled a book of his strip "Los Hooligans". Part of his strip dealt with Twin Peaks and in chatting with him I found out that he hadn't watched the show, he had drawn those parts with the help of friends that were fans. Anyway, just thought I'd share some little known Rodriguez facts. br!an -- __ ____ __ ____ __ __ (__==__) /\ \ / \_\ / /\ / \ \ / |\ / /\ (oo) ( moo.) / \_\ / /\ |_| / / /| /\ \ \ / ||/ / / /-------\/ -' / /\ | |\ \/ /_/_ / / / \ \/ \ \ / |/ / / / | U.T.|| / \/ |_| \ __ \_\ /_/ / \ /\ \_\ / /| / / * ||----|| / /\ ./_/ \ \ \/_/_\_\/ \ \ \/_// / | / / ^^ ^^ \ \/ |_| \ \_\ /_/\ \ \_\ /_/ /|_/ / Br!an Bloom \__/_/ \/_/ \_\/ \/_/ \_\/ \_\/ brianb@netcom.com .. but music hides me so well, ..and reveals me.. oh well - HR ======================================================================== From: r.lovejoy1@genie.geis.com Date: Fri, 31 Dec 93 01:42:00 BST Subject: Happy New Year's Eve eve! Meri's post (hi Anthony!) on listening to Warpaint hit me by surprise; I too was listening to it just the other day! Ectosynchronicity at work. Or perhaps, as John Brunner noted in his amazing tome "Stand On Zanzibar", the Hipcrime Vocab definition of "Coincidence": You weren't paying attention to what else was going on! Today I listened very carefully to DCD's "Into The Labyrinthe". I especially love "How Fortunate the Man..." and in listening today, I figured out his Other influence. Many have compared his singing to Jim Morrison, but today I heard the texture and phrasing of Frank Sinatra in there. And I mean that as a compliment! Does anybody else notice this or am I way out there in Deep Space as usual? Listen especially to words that end in a "t". I swear Frank sings those words the same way.:) Anthony has really piqued my curiosity to hear Ms. Smith. That was a scary dream. Don't worry, I don't think there is a High School at Cabrini Green. If there were though, I'm sure they could use more wonderful people like you to work there. It's unfortunate that places such as CG are only known for drug-dealing, shootings and murders. When my son was a toddler, we were forced by necessity to live in a CG-like housing development. My husband and I were separated and I was a "welfare mother" trying to do my best. The first week we lived there I was witness to 2 violent incidences.* Still, I lived there 3 years and met lots of wonderful people who just couldn't afford any better. Where I lived wasn't anywhere near as bad as Cabrini Green, but whenever I hear of all the bad stuff happening there, I remember my own situation and think of all the good people who are trapped there. Vickie ps, *Both involved husbands beating up their wives, different couples each time. I was the one who called the police both times, because the first happened right outside my front door and the second happened outside my back door. Much later, I found out that I was a "marked" woman...the husband in the first case was going to "get" me if I'd testified against him. His wife dropped the charges though, and it never came to trial. At the time, I had no idea how close I was to getting beat up myself. This guy's mother and sisters came to me and tried to talk me out of testifying because *they* knew that he'd made threats against me, but they didn't tell me then. After the wife dropped the charges, and months after the couple moved away from the projects, one of the sisters told me. Yikes! I was *really* upset when I found out, because this guy had beat his wife with a thick tree branch and she was in *very* bad shape...had to be taken away in an ambulance. I don't know why she dropped the charges. She was probably scared of him, but she was also a battered woman with nowhere else to go. To this day, I wonder if she's still alive :-( or if she got away from him) ======================================================================== From: Aeren Hawkins Subject: Re: Happy 1994!!!! Well, it's like this... A few days before Christmas, my apartment manager mentioned to me that a stray cat had been hanging around the building, "and he looks *just* like Nemo!" (Nemo is my very sweet, very large 4-year-old grey&white cat. To give you an idea of his temperament, Dave looked at me one day and said "Honey, the cat isn't placid, he's *inert*." :-) ) So, no sightings of the stranger until Christmas afternoon, when my mom and I were hanging out at my apartment while I roasted the turkey. I had let both Nemo and Olive (darling, wiggly 5-month-old kitten) out to play, and went outside to check on them. Olive was chasing Nemo through the bushes, or so I thought. When I got closer, I realized that the cat she was chasing was slightly smaller than Nemo, and one of his markings was just a little bit off - other than that, he looked *just* like Nemo. He was very friendly and affectionate, so I coaxed him upstairs with me. (Not difficult to do, btw...) When we walked in, Mom said something about how Nemo obviously enjoys being able to frolic in the garden. "Look again," I said. :-) The stranger, whom we started calling "Hamilton" (it seems to fit his personality) hung out with us, sleeping and eating, for several hours, until the grandparents arrived and it got too crowded for his comfort. Since then, Hamilton seems to have decided that the apartment manager is an even softer touch than I am (hard to believe!) and is hanging out with them a lot. He does come up to visit occasionally. It's probably just as well - if I haven't acquired a new cat, I can still get a new bird... Heh heh heh. (I can imagine poor Dave throwing up his hands and muttering "My girlfriend, the zookeeper.") Happy new year to everyone who hasn't already celebrated it (hi, Philip!)...
