Hawkins a one-hit wonder (with a smiley), but it seems to me that from 1992 to now is a bit quick to dismiss her as that. Actually, I just bought that disc a few months ago and thought it was quite good, although not what I was expecting, and "Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover" was quite tasty. I feel mildly (only mildly) guilty being concerned about the weather for my New Years weekend excursion. For reasons only partially known to mankind, I am heading for Death Valley tomorrow around lunchtime, where I will camp out for as long as I can stand it, or until Sunday, when I need to come back anyway. Forecasts show it being a brisk mid 30's at night, which should put it around the high in Chicago. Well, I guess that's a little cold to be sitting outside. I hope Death Valley doesn't have too much bad karma for ushering in a new year. Perhaps it would be better to think of it as showing out the old year there, and returning to San Diego to usher in the new. Well, if I make it back, I've some comments on recent purchases of Kirsty MacColl, Over the Rhine and a pseudo-free Merryn Cadell giveaway. CD Review proudly picked Aimee Mann's disc as the rock disc of the year, just like me. Is most wonderful. Happy New Year to everyone and their cats. Neal ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 28 Dec 1993 19:56:34 -0700 (MST) From: Kevin Knapp Subject: another "top ten albums of '93" list... Hello, all... just thought I'd post yet another top 10 list, just in case you weren't sick of them yet. Here goes: 1. This Mortal Coil 1983-1991 (the boxed set). I read in 'Billboard' that they're targeting this at yuppies; I know I haven't been able to afford mine yet, and as a record store employee I get stuff at cost! In any case, I had purchased the three CDs separately as imports. Highly reccomended for all ectophiles... 2. Happy Rhodes _RhodeSongs_. I suppose this one is a given for everyone on Ecto, but you'll not that _Equipoise_ isn't on this list. Why? Well, I haven't heard it yet, but there's an embarassing little story behind that. You see, before I had ever heard of HR, one of my boss's friends brought _Equipoise_ over for the store to borrow; she had heard Happy on National Public Radio and immediately fell in love with Happy, like everyone does. But I violated the age old maxim 'never judge a book by its cover'; upon seeing the cover, I immediately assumed (oh so wrongly!) that it was some cheesy death-metal promo, and I sincerely hope all Ectophiles will forgive me when I reveal that I never did listen to it. Of course, my boss loved it, and after she returned _Equipoise_ to its rightful owner she ordered her copy of _RhodeSongs_, and once I heard _RhodeSongs_ the rest was history. Happy has now supplanted Ultravox/Midge Ure as my favorite artist of all time. And the _Equipoise_ thing was a truly humbling experience... 3. Dead Can Dance _Into The Labyrinth_. I guess I'm trendy... I don't care much for Lisa Gerrard's vocals on this album; with the exception of "The Wind That Shakes The Barley", her vocals are a little too ethnic for me (and to think I own two Ofra Haza CDs!) I much prefer her on, say, _Within The Realm Of A Dying Sun_. 4. My personal compilation of stuff taped off of Front 242's two albums out this year, _06:21:03:11 Up Evil_ and _05:22:09:12 Off_. Half of these albums are great, and half seems to be filler. I don't think I'd recommend it to many Ectofiles, though: it's not really music, more of a danceable application of technology. Yes, one of those albums where I don't think anybody actually plays anything; it all seems computer generated to me... It's mostly angry, great stuff to dance to, but keep an eye on your speedometer if you're driving while listening to it... 5. Kate Bush _Demos '76-'77_. Calm down, I don't think this has ever been available. It's not new, but I didn't run across it and get my copy until this year. Great stuff, just her voice and piano, complete with audible breathing and other background noise. Contents: The Kick Inside, Hammer Horror, It Hurts Me, Keeping Me Waiting, Kashka, Coming Out, Oh To Be In Love, Playing Canasta, Hot In The Ice, Ferry Me Over, On The Rocks, Violin, The Craft Of Life, Eddie, In My Garden, Frightened Eyes, Disbelieving Angel, Never The Less, Come Closer, So Soft, I Don't See Why, Hold Me. Does anyone else out there have a copy of this? I'd be perfectly willing to make copies for people on a first-come, first serve basis... (Uh oh I'm not going to regret that statement, am I?) Send me e-mail if interested... 6. Everything But The Girl _82-92 Essence & Rare_. Wonderful stuff; I adore this band. 7. Die Krupps _A Tribute To Metallica_. *giggle*. I don't like Metallica, but this tape is unintentionally (or is it intentional?) hilarious. All synthesizers and drum machines, not a guitar to be found ANYWHERE. Again, not recommended for the average Ectophile... 8. The Breeders _Last Splash_. After hearing "Drivin' On 9" I had to own this. It's that simple. 9. KMFDM _Sucks_ CD5 single. The lyrics say it all: "...our music is samples/it's totally fake/it's done by machines/'cause they don't make mistakes...We don't have no lyrics/our message is nil/we hate all dj's/ they're making us ill...We don't like Michael Jackson/we hate Depeche Mode/we don't care for Madonna/or Kylie Minogue..." it goes on and on like this. Funny, but not Ecto. 10. (Tie). Deep Forest, Finitribe _An Unexpected Groovy Treat_. Deep Forest is Ecto, I believe, but it's as much a product of technology as Front 242. The pygmies are pretty much irrelevant; it's just an ecological marketing gimmick. They could have sampled just about anything with the same effect. Isn't technology wonderful? Finitribe is very lightweight danceable pop, non-Ecto, with odd lyrics. I especially liked the song "Hypnopaedia" which has something to do with mind control, hypnosis, love, and chickens. Go figure... Feel free to send me hate mail; just about all of my E-mail correspondants are out of town until our spring semester kicks in. Jessica: any way of compiling an Ecto top ten list, taken from everyone who sends in a list? Just wondering... Have a wonderful New Year, everyone! Kate Bush _Demos '76-'77_. actually, there are numerous bootleg releases that include these demos. at last count, i think there were two cassettes, three cds, five vinyl eps and two vinyl lps which manage to corral all these tracks in one shape or another. is _demos 76-77_ the title of the release? what format is it in? might be yet another version of these songs.... >Finitribe is very lightweight danceable pop, non-Ecto, with odd lyrics. man, have they changed over time. they used to be a lot harsher electronic music with twisted lyrics by chris connelly. he left the band a few years back to pursue a solo career and that, more or less, spelled the end of finitribe's interesting days. check out _electrolux_ or any of the early singles (if you can find them) to get a taste of what this band once was. just generating mail and avoiding chores... :) +woj ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 28 Dec 93 23:17:23 EST From: mojzes@monet.vill.edu (brni) Subject: mooooo hi there, just thought i'd get a couple 'a copper pieces in... > >I, for one, enjoy my position on top of the food chain, but I'm not going to i just wanted to point out that the food chain is circular, and has no top. in the end, all we are is fertilizer in the wind... >The only problem I have is with blatant hypocrisy, as in the case of a friend >of mine from college who decided one day to become a complete vegan, yet kept >his car with the leather seats and his suede boots and whined bitterly come >Thanksgiving that he was missing out on all the fun. Since we are a music group, and major consumers at Tower Records, I thought it was best you all know about it. Note that this is only a lawsuit. Its existence does not imply validity. There is much talk in soc.motss already. Many people are saying it must be true, others say it cannot be. What is clear already is that there are some very high-level management types in the parent company who are openly gay. The Tower in Atlanta is managed by a gay man (I think he is out), and at least 80% of the employees are also gay. Enough blabbing. Info follows: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- A former Tower Records security guard has filed suit against the retail store outlet, charging that he was forced to quit after refusing to conduct surveillance of gay store managers. Husham ''Eddie'' Haroun, who supervised security at 11 Bay Area stores, said his superiors ordered him to bug a gay manager's office to find out if the manager was ''arranging personal homosexual liaisons on company time and telephones.'' Haroun was also told to spy on gay managers outside of work, the lawsuit stated. The company intended ''to terminate or demote gay store managers because homosexuals do not fit the image of Tower Records,'' the suit charged. Haroun, 29, said he was forced to resign in February after working for Tower for 3 1/2 years because he refused to bug offices. The suit, filed last week in San Francisco Superior Court, seeks an unspecified amount of damages. The suit also claims that Tower discriminated against Haroun, who is black, because of his race and that he was subjected to racial epithets at work. Jamerson Allen, a lawyer representing Tower, declined to comment, saying the company has not yet seen the suit. [note: pierson used caps to start each word in this piece, but i'm not going to.] Legend has it that in order to further his understanding of electricity, benjamin franklin (a human) spent time flying his kite. Not true. Sorry. No. Nope. Nada. Folks, if truth be told, Ben Franklin (a coyote) used his understanding of electricity to rationalize his kite flying to his wife. Yes, using documents and notes of a personal nature found in a leather pouch tucked inside a cigarette case stashed in a fishing tackle box stuffed in a milk crate hidden in the rafters of the gravel space underneath william penn's house, i have unearthed some startling information. Here are some exerpts: "May Fifth--New kite almost ready. Orange day-glo paint nearly dry. Can't wait." "May Twenty-Ninth--Been flying X-15 (code name I gave kite) three weeks now. What a blast! Great wind here in Pennsylvania Hills. Sunburnt nose. Wife is a bit miffed." "June Thirteenth--Rain for two weeks straight now. Can't fly kite in rain--wife says I'll get my white knee scoks dirty. Bummer. Tom Jefferson called--he's stuck on the "Declaration" document. Told him I'll help if I can. X-15 sits in corner. Bummer." "July Tenth--Eureka! Told wife I had to study 'electricity'--she let me fly X-15 in rain all day! Tremendous winds! Might be something to the electricity thing--not sure." "July Twenty-first--Rain continues. Who cares! X-15 handles like a dream. 'Electricity' thing is bearing unsuspected fruit. Definately something there. Wife's been great. Lets me fly kite in rain all day, then tucks me in chair with soft blue blanket and feeds me apple cobbler. Even let me watch big game on cable." And finally, a last note. "August First--Had to retire X-15 today. Hit by lightning, crashed and burned. Three months before new one arrives by boat. Have to pay crazy British shipping taxes. Nothing to do buy study 'electricity' till new kite arrives. Bummer. Oh well." And this will conclude today's lesson. *********************** ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 29 Dec 93 01:53:59 EST From: mojzes@monet.vill.edu (brni) Subject: ummm...uh...i forget greetings and salutations, i'm *still* working on catching up. i'm one week behind and my account is very unhappy with me. i have to clean the rabbit's cage too... :( there were a couple things that my mind, in its brilliant lucidity (hey, hey! you! stop snickering!) leapt to while reading the last 100+ posts. for anyone who loved "pogo" and walt kelly in general, there is a new comic book out (10 issues, so far) called "bone" i highly recommend it. i witnessed the ultimate in marketing scams the other day. a tv commercial came on the tv, advertising a hair dye. this particular dye doesn't change your hair color to some other color--it dyes your hair so that it is exacly the same color it already is.
