I can never limit myself to a list of ten favorites, so I'll just mention the albums I liked the most in 1993 (in alphabetical order). Belly - Star Tanya Donnelly, ex-Throwing Muse put together an amazingly catchy batch of alternative pop songs. Lead sing, _Feed the tree_ hooked me and reeled me in. Kate Bush - The Red shoes A nice, varied, entertaining Kate Bush album. Title track is a killer. I like to see Kate expanding her musical style, even if it is into Top 40 pop! Clannad - Banba Maire Brennan's voice haunts me. I love it. Banba certainly isn't their strongest album, but coupled with their live show, it was worthy of inclusion here. (And I think they're far superior to Enya) Dead can dance - Into the labyrinth An ecto find! I had only been vaguely aware of this duo before my joining ecto. Thanks! In a rare reversal, male vocalist (Brendan?)'s voice moves me more than Lisa Perry's! _The ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove_, _The carnival is over_, and _How fortunate the man with none_ are gorgeous. Aimee Mann - Whatever Aimee Mann can sure craft a great pop song. It's good to see her first solo outing in such fine form. Wonder how her old 'til Tuesday buddies are doing? Martha & the muffins - Modern Lullaby I found this CD courtesy of Love-hounds when I threw out a query to find out if anyone knew what had happened to M+M? I then used the CDbar to acquire my very own copy! M+M was my favorite band for a while, and Modern Lullaby continues it the band's fine tradition. Their classy sense of funk/pop thrills me. One of the top of the year! McLachlan, Sarah - Fumbling towards ecstasy A powerfully moving album that again, I wouldn't have had until next year if not for ecto (and the CD bar). Although individual songs don't grab the way her past songs have, as a unified album, this could be her best album yet! Rhodes, Happy - Equipoise I discovered Happy this year thanks to all of you. She's quite a find. I have so far picked up Equipoise and Rhodesongs. _Runners_, _He will come_ and the acoustic version of _Save our souls_ send shivers down my spine. Siberry, Jane - When I was a boy Well, this is it, my #1 album of the year! 1993 was also the year that Jane surpassed Kate on my favorite performers list. When I was a boy is an almost perfect Jane Siberry album. (An honor shared by The Walking). _At the beginning of time_ amazes me. The two sibgathers I was priveleged enough to attend were exquisite. Smashing pumpkins - Siamese dream I started out loving this, and then it lost some steam. Still, there's something about the impassioned, haunting songs that Billy Corrigan and crew pump out that intigue me. Tribe - Sleeper Although I enjoyed their first album, Abort, more, Sleeper shows why Tribe should be a national success. I don't understand why it isn't happening. _Supercollider_ is quintessestial Tribe. Mentions: Grant Lee Buffalo - Fuzzy (_Fuzzy_ is a great song!) The pursuit of happiness - The downward road (These guys are great fun!) An emotional fish - Junk puppets (I think the lead vocalist is incredibly sexy) Cyndi Lauper - Hat full of stars (A triumph!) Book of love - Lovebubble ("On the bottom, on the top - when we go we go pop!") Tears for fears - Elemental (_Break it down again_ is definitely one of the year's best singles) The Story - The angel in the house (They have the potential to be one of my favorites, but something seems to be missing) Crash Vegas - Stone (This Canadian band has some great hooks) Breeders - Last Splash (I think _Cannonball_ must be THE single of the year!) Oleta Adams - Evolution (I just got this for Christmas and haven't listened to it much yet, but her voice merits its inclusion here) Haven't gotten yet, but want: Liz Phair - Exile in guyville Mae Moore - Bohemia Alison Moyet - Essex (Not released here yet) ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 28 Dec 1993 10:42:26 +1200 From: sainty_p@kosmos.wcc.govt.nz Subject: Re: Today's your Geburtstag friend.... It's nice that you mention Mark Nevin, I wish I knew more about him, had a biography or something. I'd like to meet him too. Charley and I were hoping that he'd be with Kirsty a couple months ago, but he wasn't. We did meet Pete Glenister, Kirsty's guitar player. Glenister produced the Mary Coughlin album "Uncertain Pleasures" which contains songs written by Mark Nevin ("A Leaf From A Tree," and "Red Ribbon") and Kirsty singing bvox on one song ("Invisible To You"). I went looking on Eddi's album "Mirmama" to see if Mark E. Nevin wrote any of those songs. He didn't, but some songs are co-credited to a "MacColl" but I don't know if that's Kirsty or not. It's interesting, there's a "Toronto music mafia" (Jane Siberry, David Ramsden, Holly Cole, David Piltch, etc. etc. etc) and "Nevin music mafia" and it looks as if they've crossed paths more than once. Especially recently, since Eddi Reader is working with David Piltch (Holly Cole's string bass player) and Teddy Borowicki (Jane and kd's piano player). I wish I could see the entire "family tree" written out. Anyway, Mark E. Nevin is a helluva song writer, and if anyone sees his name anywhere else, I'd like to know about it. Reading that back, it doesn't make as much sense as it did when I was writing it :-), but oh well... Speaking of Fairground Attraction, I bought a CD single a while back that's supposed to have 4 songs on it, but it only has 2. Mike Mendelson had this same problem (didn't you MJM?). It's the "Perfect" CD single. Listed songs are "Perfect," "Walkin' After Midnight," "You Send Me" (all by Fairground Attraction) and the song "Captured" by someone named Brian Kennedy. "Perfect" and "Captured" are the only songs on it though. It definitely upset me, to pay $9.00 for a CD single with a song I liked, but that I already had elsewhere, and one song I didn't like, by an artist I have no interest in. Grrr! As long as I'm bitching about CD singles, I'll add my voice to those grrring at EMI's "Moments of Pleasure" rip-off. It's the most outrageous rip off since the Box Set, though not *as* expensive. (And this time, I don't think it was Kate's doing, unlike the Box Set). As long as I'm talking about CD singles, if anyone comes across Mary Margaret O'Hara's Christmas EP or CD single (I'll take what I can get) I'd *LOVE* to get a copy. (I'm green with envy that Neile found one used. We asked around in Toronto and it's out-of-print now :-(. I even asked Mary Margaret's manager about it, and she doesn't even have a copy herself. Vickie ======================================================================== From: Jeremy Corry Date: Mon, 27 Dec 93 21:58:46 -0500 Subject: Ecto-MUD? IRC is to MUD as a tire is to a bicycle. Of course, I only do social MUDs, no gaming for me. A large portion of what you do on a MUD (social/communication oriented ones) is talk to other people in nearly the same way as you might do on IRC. BUT, that is only the beginning of what you can do. Vickie complained about the user-unfriendliness of many MU*s. I have been MU*ing for months, on and off, and I still spend more time looking at help files than I do playing or talking. The problem is how the help files are written and presented. Once you understand what the help file is trying to say, its easy. (Ever read a DOS manual?) My favorite MU* just changed a bunch of commands, and after being away for a few months, I found I didn't know how to move around any more! Vickie also talked about e-mail addresses, real life names, and anonymity. MU*s are a combination of text-based virtual reality and gaming. As a result, many people assume characters while mu*ing, and do not wish to have their RL identity confused with their VR identity. Many also play more than one character, have different genders, ages, etc. Many people also just go by their RL names and identities. Whenever I have a spare block of time (about once a month), I spend it in Cyberion City (MicroMuse). CybCity is run by MIT, is social/communication oriented, has no gaming in common areas, has a high number of children on it, and is not going away. I only play during off-off hours, so I don't think I've actually met any children, though it's impossible to tell. It is about as permanent as any MU* can be. I play a neuter, ageless character named Sebastiane. I have a house in the Eleanor Roosevelt Residential Area. I am in the process of setting it up so that ECTO-philes can meet there and talk. It is currently open, so feel free to meet up there, even if I am not home. There is lots of unbuilt space there, and I think it would be an ideal MU* to build an ECTO amusement park, museum, or library. Or I can make my house into an ECTO mansion. It would be best to set up a unique ECTO-MU*. However, this would require a machine directly on the internet, with a lot of hard disk space, free CPU time, and several people to administer it. Admin'ing a MU* requires programmer-level skill and TONS of time. This is not something I would be able to do. One advantage I see in having it as part of a larger system, is that all of the people on the system, will be exposed to it, good Happy-vangelizing! I say this is something we MUST do. It doesn't matter to me whether it is it's own MU*, part of a larger one, or what. If we can get one of our own, great! If not, I suggest CybCity. Anyway, feel free to visit my house in CybCity, it is very hard to catch me there. Happy MU*ing! --Jeremy p.s. If anyone on ecto is already on CybCity, please let me know, I find it hard to meet people there, because of the odd hours. Also, to guest log into CybCity, telnet to michael.ai.mit.edu, and login as "guest". If you know much about MU* building let me know, I need help. If you need help, ask me, I'll be glad to do what I can. ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 27 Dec 93 22:44:22 EST From: woj@remus.rutgers.edu (the dark saxophone) Subject: psychotic hungry cats there's three of them running around, clawing at my legs insisting that i feed them...but they're going to have to wait until i finish this post... first, a happy tale. last friday, while wandering around the malls trying to finish up some last minute christmas shopping, i walked into a wall to wall sound and video on a whim just to see what they had in stock. i was quite surprised to find copies of _rhodesongs_ and _warpaint_ (filed properly in the miscellaneous "r" section!) at a store in western upstate new york state which is noted for not carrying anything other than what's on the billboard top 40...so, in gratitude, i bought the _warpaint_ as an extra gift for my sister (for whom i had already bought the limited edition of the 10,000 maniacs myv unplugged show). wall to wall also had victoria williams' _happy come home_ cd which i snapped up instantly having been waiting for years to see this on cd. incidentially, when my sister unwrapped _warpaint_, her quizzical look in my direction garnered the reply, "trust me, you'll love it" from yours truly. by the time i left my parents this past afternoon, she was in total agreement. :) the only music gift i received was an album by saga entitled _the beginner's guide to throwing shapes_ - an album by a favorite band of mine that i had no idea existed. i think it was a german-only release from 1989 so i guess i shouldn't be surprised. it's good, if anyone's interested. dbburke@mit.edu (Diane Burke) sez: >I liked the new DCD CD, but I don't know what they're saying. brendan perry's songs are almost always in english. lisa gerrard's songs can be in anything from old gaelic to latin to spanish to who-know's-what. i haven't listened that closely to her vocals to note what language she's singing in on _into the labyrinth_, but she's sung in all of the above tongues on previous albums. >What would people recommend of theirs? _the serpent's egg_ is my personal fave, with _in the realm of a dying sun_ and _spleen and ideal_ as close seconds. I understand that, but I'd imagine that in EW (ok, it's just an easy name for me for now...we could vote on a real name later) people would want to know who everybody is. It certainly wouldn't be manditory to either be anonymous or non-anonymous, but I personally hope that Ectophiles will choose to let other Ectophiles know who they are.
