It's kind of hard to describe their sound-- "Miranda Sex Garden as a cabaret group" doesn't quite match up. They are incredible, though, and well worth trying to track down. I actually managed to win, during a section of the show in which they did some banter with the audience-- and they do quite a bit of talking between the numbers-- somewhere between storytelling and stand up-- anyway, I won a T-shirt that says "BETTY rules," and their CD, HELLO BETTY (from The Man from Betty Productions. Hell, any band that can close their main set with an a capella medley of "Happy Days Are Here Again," "Dance All Your Blues Away", "We Are the Champions" and "America the Beautiful" is okay in my book. I'll have to wait for the next show I suppose. Did they do the Streisand medley? That had me laughing pretty hard! I'm glad they're making their way across the country. They play live quite often and return to DC relatively frequently. I've also heard that they play the occasional women's music festival. HELLO BETTY should be fairly easy to find in DC, NY, and Boston. There was some discussion about the band, oh, maybe a year ago. Interested folks might find it worthwhile to search the archives. Virgin! 4AD! > Shall we take bets on which lucky company gets her? :) Hopefully not the first of these. I still have distinct memories of getting a cassette of the Beatles' _Magical Mystery Tour_, and finding out, to my dismay, that the opening bars of the first selection on side 2 were missing. When I took it back to exchange it, the guy at the store said that that was typical of Capitol (EMI's principal American label). They were out of the title in question, and it was over a month before they got it in again. I wonder if that's also typical of Capitol? Subjectively, I think Happy would fit in best with 4AD's stable of artists, notwithstanding that that label, if I remember correctly, is now distributed (at least) by one (I forget which one) of the same six-headed cartel that's cornered most of the record market at home and abroad. "Hello Betty" seems to be carried on tape at People Like Us Books in Chicago (at an unusually high price, for a cassette, of 15 bucks or so), and I have seen a used CD copy at Reckless Records (if I only knew...). I guess Ectophiles don't read rmm, eh? ------------------------------------ From: A.L.Radtke@bradford.ac.uk (Drew Radtke) Well, if there are any Eddi Reader completeists out there (insert 'a' for US in that word) you can hear her pre-FA on the 1984ish LP 'Perhaps' from Scottish band, the Associates. She does co-vocals on the track 'The Best of You' with the god-like genius, Billy MacKenzie. That was on WEA (Warner Bros) in the UK, still available as a reduced-price record I think. From: igb@fulcrum.co.uk (Ian G Batten) She's touring next month with Clive Gregson and Boo Hewardine. Bizarre. I must get some tickets. From: awrc@dcs.ed.ac.uk (Al Crawford) Yep, she's on _Perhaps_ but the album, like almost everything in the Associates back catalogue is deleted and was never released on CD. _Perhaps_, in particular, would make an ideal CD release. And just to add to the general mistreatment of Mackenzie/The Associates, the man himself has been dropped by Circa records. As for Mackenzie as a god-like genius...hmmm, I wouldn't debate that with regard to everything from, oh, _The Affectionate Punch_ right up to _Perhaps_ (and maybe even _The Glamour Chase_) but he's really lost it these days, IMHO. Not nearly distraught enough. Getting back to the original topic though, one that *might* be of interest to Eddi Reader fans is John Foxx's most recent album, _In Mysterious Ways_ in 1985. A female vocalist called "Sadenia Reader" who sounds very like Eddi guests on several tracks. Anyone know for sure if it is her? -------------------------------------- A couple of things...Boo Hewerdine toured with Laurie Freelove, and Sadenia is indeed Eddi's real name. (I know because the name is listed on the Fairground Attraction cassette that Charley found for $1.99 at a used record store that *I* had been to looking for FA stuff and ended up buying the fairly worthless Anna Palm CD for ***$23.00***(ARRGH!!) and lots of other stuff but I didn't look in the cassette section and I wish I had because I would have found it first and then *I'd* have something that Charley doesn't have!
