I don't mind, as the digest maintainer - I'm glad someone was willing to send them out at all! (many thanks to Dave :) My apologies to those who were inconvenienced by the week of sporadic digests. There are a few reasons why I do not simply have a program send out a digest once/day. One is that I will *not* send out a digest over 1000 lines; there are several people on the list whose mailers cut mail off at 1000 lines. Another is that I check each digest by hand to make sure the formatting is ok; it's a fairly decent digester, but there are a few situations it doesn't handle properly (like forwarded messages). Also, i *do* usually send out a digest each day, even if it's smaller than usual. Sometimes I skip a day on the weekend if I don't log in. Could I get some feedback from other people who've been on the list for a while? Would you prefer I set something up to send out messages every 24 hours, no matter waht the length (10 lines or 1000)? I think another advantage to my checking the size regularly is that if 2000 lines come in in one 24 hour period, you'll get the first 600 of them as soon as the first 600 have arrived, the second 600 when the second 600 have arrived, et.c. That's even better response than just getting them all in one chunk at the end of the day. (I know there are several people who check their mail at various times of the day, also people in different coutries are often online at very different times than I am here). jessica || jessica || It is this that || Don't try to tell me there's no reason for || || lawrence || brings us || any moment in time, every memory of mine. || || koeppel || together. || Those years are lines of color on my face, || || dembski || --Kate || the past is warpaint. --Happy Rhodes || ======================================================================== From: depeche@cs.mcgill.ca (S. It's difficult for most record companies to order from such obscure indy record labels, for many reasons. It's not Loreena's fault; I'm sure she has her work cut out for her. She got the Juno last year, and "The Visit" went Platnium (whatever that means). I saw a news-story on her on W5 (a CBC show), and a reporter interviewed some people working at different record shops across canada, and one of the interesting things about "The Visit" is that *EVERY* time a DJ at a record store plays the disc, he/she immediately get LOTS of requests from customers walking around in the store saying "Who is she? But it is true, Elemental is a weaker album as a whole, but it has some moments which make it a worthy member of my CD collection. -- | Alan Ezust depeche@cs.mcgill.ca McGill University Computer Science | |------------------------ Montreal, Quebec, Canada --------------------------| #include ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 18 Jan 93 14:55:13 EST From: jessica Subject: digest vs. mailing list. Hello all, Thanks to all who've wished me a happy birthday. I feel very unworthy, as I am not one to go out of my way to offer the sentiment, but it was nice to see my name in print with the best wishes of my (physically) anonymous friends. Being the ponderous sort, I'm still unevenly adapted to the net. For example, I can post a letter to my brother in Denver, and get a reply the same day, and this does not *wow* me (anymore). On the other hand, while I've intuitively accepted the idea of "knowing" people through means other than being PHYSICALLY in the same place as they are, it's still odd....I think I like it. If I may continue in this self-indulgent vein..... My birthday WAS very enjoyable, for those that asked :) Kathy and I went to a Japanese restaurant and generally slowed the clock on an otherwise hectic schedule. A gift (part of the combination with Christmas, as it is large (in at least two ways)) finally arrived at the music store, and we took delivery Saturday. I now own TWO "congas" (actually, 1 quinto (smallest in the family) and 1 (super)tumba (largest in the family). I've yet to determine the reception of such gifts by the neighbors (we live in a townhouse......:)....... Two informational questions...... 1) Re: the above. Is anyone out there aware of some GOOD instructional audio/video tapes available for congas/african percussion????? I know this is a diverse list, and it would not surprise me if there was a deluge of positive responses. given the odd-ness of the request though, neither would I be surprised if there were one, large, collective, fuzzy, blue "huh?"......:) 2) I'm still ignorant of some of the resources available to net-users, and was wondering if someone out there knows of a mailing list (rec.music.jazz ????) or knows directly of the appearance in the northeast of The Lounge Lizards......... On to personal business...... Vickie: I believe you should post as you see fit. Anyone not interested in hearing about your experiences/state of mind can easily skip the posts....perhaps the only concession on your part, if these are not to exist in separate digests, would be to adopt a naming convention so as to make it easier for those who don't wish to read them, to scan the topics at the head of the digest........I DID read some of them.....editing is not due to lack of interest, but rather lack of time. It could not have been easy to post such feelings/memories so broadly...IMPOSSIBLE on almost any other list. More power to you! [This comes from someone who USUALLY shudders when people "unload" their woes...An example of a DIFFERENT situation in which it WAS a bit much........] We had a temporary secretary here who, within one day, had told everyone her life story (the last two years of it anyway). As the roads to Rome, all conversations led to "Jane"'s divorce.....e.g., "Oh hello, Jane." [Turning to Mary] "Sorry I'm late, we discovered a leak in our roof around the skylight..." [Jane interupts]"Oh, I used to have skylights in my house. We lived in a 4000 sq. ft. house in Simsbury, but I moved out because I'm getting a divorce. My husband's an alcoholic and once he started attending AA, he met another woman there, it's just one big dating service, you know. Anyway......" THAT was inappropriate. Vickie, let me make it clear that I am not comparing YOUR post to this experience. This is familiarly known as the "warm, blue, fuzzy" mailing list, and so it is....you are among friends. "Jane" told me the above story within the first five minutes of my meeting her [really, no exaggeration]. The difference (one of the differences) is that there is already established an atmosphere of support in this list. While this may not be clear to those of us who've not leaned on it, it exists. It is certainly this subtle presence (for "skimmers" like me) that makes me regard this group as being unconditionally friendly....keep up the good work, folks! [Hope this encouragement does not seem strange, coming as late as it does....perhaps...Dirk?...has the right idea concerning the frequency of digests......]. Oh, here's something of general (for this list) interest. A little something to have a giggle at my expense (invited). I've been an ectophile for nearly one year now, and finally celebrated New Year's weekend (which found me in Albany for first night) by picking up....1st5 (i.e., 1st4 + Warp ain't.) I now lead a more honest and less freeloading existence [prior to this, I had only a tape of most of ecto and warpaint, delivered to me by my friend in Albany who introduced me to HR's music]. Do I earn some dubious honor for this "achievement"? Longest hold out????? Found the discs as Gootah's...in Albany....don't ask where :P. Well, off I go.....peace to you all until next time I'm logged in. Chris "Anything that happens, happens Anything, that in happening, causes something else to happen, causes something else to happen. She just sticked the concert ticket on her monitor Klaus> screen to help remembering her. Vickie> Good, I can't wait to hear it! I guess Claudia is as good at procrastinating as I am, so I'll do a report on the Bel Canto concert I was at on Nov 27 1992 :-) The venue was "Sentrum Rockeklubb", which is partly run by the Labour Party. Sounds like a dreadful place, huh? :-) Actually, it has just been refurbished from being an abandoned cinema, so all the chairs are gone but the tiers and the balcony are intact, and there's a largish open space in front of the stage. Quite nice. I arrived about an hour after the doors opened, and was surprised to see that everyone was sitting/huddling quietly on the tiers, and the space in front of the stage was completely empty. I had never been at Sentrum before, so I asked a guy next to me if this was normal. He didn't know, but thought that Bel Canto made music which was best experienced if you sat down and relaxed. Boy, was he wrong!!! While we were waiting, various techno/house tracks was played on the PA. Nothing spectacular, I find it a good sign that they chose to play that genre. I didn't recognize any of it, except for Bel Canto's own "Ride the Unicorn" (from the "Unicorn" CD5). To cut a long story short: When they at last appeared on stage, people had risen and were crowding in front of the stage, as usual. The set began with just Nils jamming on his electric fiddle and Andreas on percussion. Very groovy, with elements of jazz, Norwegian folk music, African rhythms. Anneli then came out singing "Summer". Uh, I can't remember the set list now :-/. I was at their concert at "Rockefeller" here in Oslo in May, and the difference was dramatic. At "Rockefeller", they relied heavily on tapes to fill in all the synths, dubs etc. They delivered a very professional and polished performance then; Anneli didn't miss a note, etc. etc. very elaborate etc. etc. In short; almost just like the album versions. "Die Geschichte einer Mutter" stands out as a highlight from that concert, though. Anneli's wails were so heartfelt I cried for the first time in 10 years. This time, only a BOOMing bass drum was on tape, and it sounded like they took it from there. It worked great! They twisted the songs around, introducing new themes, new beats. The audience was bobbing and dancing along all the time. They played at least five new songs (I lost count...), one for the very first time :-) A couple of them were more like novelty songs, e.g. one "springar" (or was it "gangar"?), i.e. a traditional Norwegian dance, played on the fiddle, with Lappish cum Arabian singsong, and percussion (drums aren't used in traditional Norwegian folk music). I was drenched with sweat afterwards, it was so intense. A brilliant concert, the best I have ever attended. "First of a Million Kisses" is their first including their only real hit, "Perfect". Around 1990 they broke up and in the same time they released an album with materials that wasn't used for the "First of..." album and alo some live recordings. I can't recall the name of this record right now but to me it is the better album of Fairground Attractions. Last year Eddie Reader finally released her solo-album, "Mirmana", for which I've waiting a long time. Maybe my expactations were too high but first it was a kind of a small disappointment, but after listening it through a couple of times it's quite OK. The things I'm missing are the excellent arrangements that together with Reader's voice made Fairground Attractions something special. /John ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 18 Jan 93 21:24:41 EST From: WretchAwry Subject: Re: Eddi Reader >You might be interested to know that Eddi Reader also appears on the new Thomas >Dolby album "Astronauts and Heretics".
