Things are looking very up right about now. I had written to the sys admin, since Jessica is on vacation. I logged on and there was a letter from him telling me that he recovered my mail file from the last backup tapes. It's all in one huge file, but I looked through it and it looks like they backed it up right before the system went down! Everything is there! I'm so happy! I'll be kermiting for an hour or so...see you later. Vickie ======================================================================== From: meth@aol.com Subject: Happy Dreams And Stranger Things Date: Thu, 14 Jan 93 22:43:48 EST Hi! Last night I had one of those epic dreams that start the minute you fall asleep and get interrupted by the alarm. It was in real time, one-mile-equals-one-mile scale, and when I woke up I had to think a minute to convince myself it wasn't a memory but a product of my warped subconscious. I won't go into the intimate details leading up to the reason I'm posting this to ecto, but cut right to it: Happy and Kevin were picking me up at seven, and I had nothing to wear. They showed up in their vehicle (a Tardis-like structure that was stretch-limo on the outside but Winnebago motor home on the inside), and waited for me to finish getting ready. We were going to their studio, which actually looked more like a record store with a kitchen off to the side than a studio, and on the way Happy and I hung out catching up while Kevin drove and I tried to figure out what the HELL Sarah McLachlan's band was doing cowering in the back of the bus. Did I mention the real kicker? Happy and Kevin had a kid, a bouncing baby girl named Tamara or something like that. I spent a lot of the dream trying to figure out how that had happened without the Ectophiles finding out, too, but before I could ask the alarm went off and ruined the moment. I just thought I'd post that and provide this group with a bit of levity. Besides, I haven't given the net.community a real reason to laugh at me lately... it's been a while since I've had a Kate dream, and the Tori dream was a bit embarrassing. ;> And on an all-too-real note, I spent my lunch hour today searching the local Sam Goody for any mention at all of Happy. I found Aural Gratification in the label list in their Blue Book, but that was all- and of course, all the employees in the store were utterly clueless to anything even vaguely musical (and to think I applied for a job at that store!!!). Afterwards I checked out the Strawberries down the street, with even less success. I guess if I want to get Equipoise when it comes out, I'd best put my order in as soon as I can. That's all for now... to sleep... hopefully not to dream... Meredith :) meth@aol.com (where the mail is taking 30 minutes to arrive- are all seven seals open yet?) ======================================================================== From: alan moorse Date: Thu, 14 Jan 93 22:59:10 -0500 Subject: Immediate (Aural) Gratification So I've been thinking about "The Wretches Gone Awry" for hours this afternoon while working on my newsletter (redesign) and waiting for my service bureau (that does my final print-out at 2500 dpi) to call. And just as I decide that I'll try to talk my wife into a trip to Albany tonight to buy some Happy music, the service bureau rep (the president of the company) calls and asks what's up. "My eyes are about scorched," I say, "so I'm just thinking about shopping for some music by Happy Rhodes tonight, just waiting for quitting time." And he replies: "Oh, I didn't know she had a record out. I'd love to hear it when you get it." It turns out he is an old friend of one of her parents. I declared this a sign from God, and Lori was game for the trip into "The Capital City," so I called a record store near a fabric store she wanted to stop in. What did they have on CD by HR? Five albums. Lori and I don't celebrate birthdays, but she reminded me that today *was* mine, so there was a chance she might not scream too loud if I, say, charged a few CDs. WHACK!! went the little plastic card. So now we're sitting here with "Rearmament" just starting. And I've got a question for you Ectophiles. In the ...ah... liner notes "Thanks to:... and to all of the Ectophiles, for inspiring the re-release of my back-catalog." Is that E-philes in general, as in people who love her work, or is she referring to the net-Ectophiles to whom I type? Oh, and a thought on the quest for Ectomusic in the New York area. When I last spent any real time in Hoboken, there was a great used record shop near the PATH station. I got Webb Wilder's "Human Canonball" there about a week after it came out -- which may say as much about the CD, and about me as it does about the shop. It's called Pier I Platters, and they've got two stores within about two blocks. I think one's on First St. between Washington Ave and the river. And another thought... I'll call around the used disc shops in Albany tomorrow, and I'll post a note if any have any Happy in stock at great prices. If anyone's interested, I can buy 'em up and ship 'em. If the price offers no advantage, though, I won't bother. g'night alanm ======================================================================== Subject: Re: Immediate (Aural) Gratification Date: Thu, 14 Jan 93 23:39:10 -0500 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu Alan Moorse wrote: >It turns out he is an old friend of one of her parents. Is that E-philes in >general, as in people who love her work, or is she referring to the >net-Ectophiles to whom I type? Technically, the only ectophiles are those who receive the Ecto mailing list. Other, more mundane, listeners are merely Happy Rhodes fans. Our own Ecto-ma, Vickie Mapes, was single-handedly responsible for introducing the Net to Happy Rhodes, largely on the rec.music.gaffa/love-hounds newsgroup/mailing list. It took a while, but things started to snowball in winter and spring of '91, just as Warpaint was coming out. You may have noticed that Vickie is given a 'thanks' in the _Warpaint_ liner. By the time Ecto got under way, the transcription project was long complete (You young'uns don't know how easy you have it! Pre-printed lyrics! ;-) and folks were starting to clammer for the 1st4 on CD. 11 months after Ecto cranked up, the CDs were released. With all of Happy's original protestations, it's a wonder it iever happened, but I guess that's the power of the Net. As always, thanks, Vickie... On a side note, when I bought the _Rearmament_ CD last week, I also checked the store for cassettes; they had one copy of _Warpaint_. It was the first time I'd ever seen the cassette at all! I was at some event or other I think, and PG was sitting at this bench kind of thing, maybe it was a press conference type thing or something I dunno. Anyway, I was asking him all these questions (questions that have been bugging me for a while) and I can even remember getting some answers, but unfortunately I can't remember most of them (gee, what a surprise ... *:) ). I remember asking him why he had never toured Australia before; I can't remember his response to that one, but when I asked him about the rumours of a followup album after US (like within a year or so) his response was kind of 'Oh, well, if you believe that you'll believe anything'. Hmmm. I'm sure there were a couple of other things, but it was a little while ago. A unique experience - I don't usually remember my dreams, but this one stood out for some reason. Bizarre. Hi Ectophiles, Hi Jessica, Hi Chris Sampson - a very Happy Birthday to you. Jessica, is it possible to create a daily digest of Ecto, like RDT? And indeed it included the very political 'Here it comes again' which was my initial exposure (a couple of posts ago). The rest of it is also very good! I had heard 'Release me' on the radio a couple of times, but never caught the name of the artist! I have been in a 'political-male-vocalists' mood recently, being triggered by Tom Robinson's very angry and very good _Power in the darkness_. Mitch originally had made me a dub of this, but after a long search in many states and CD stores I finally found it last week as an import. It hasn't left my CD player since. I could go on for hours talking about this CD, but I won't. It is music against intolerance and prejudice. Music against 'the backlash of puritanical power' that TR felt in 1978 was on the rise (little did he know then of what would happen in the nineties). I *really* wonder what his recent work is like. Another CD I bought yesterday (after some good news I got) was Leonard Cohen's _The future_, of which I had been reading raves recently, and I will also say that it is a beautiful CD. I hadn't heard much of Leonard Cohen before (only 'Dance me to the end of love'-which was a hit in Greece in the 80s because it was featured in some wine commercial on tv) but now I feel inclined to go back and thoroughly examine his song writing career. Some songs are political with quite a bitter sarcastic note to them (the title song, and 'Democracy' are good examples), while others are simple love songs, but very moody and captivating. I know that Leonard Cohen's voice is a long way from the ethereal female vocals that appeal to ectophiles, but intelligent music is so hard to find these days, that it is worth checking out. With that thought, I'll sign off -for now, Angelos (Princeton and Johns Hopkins, here I come!! :) :) :) ) +=====================================+ |'My ears have parasites'-hApPy RhOdEs| +=====================================+ ======================================================================== From: shark@CS.UCLA.EDU (Jeanne B. Mitch and others have asked whether Gyan is available in the US. I have no idea if it is. You could always ask to look at your record store's catalogs for her albums _Gyan_ and _Reddest Red_. If not available, I would be happy to mirror Klaus' offer to supply Rainbirds' albums with an offer to supply Gyan albums, at cost. Speaking of which, I just discovered that a favourite song of mine, "Sea of Time" is actually by the Rainbirds! I've had that song on tape for years, taped from the radio, and never knew who it was by. It is the extended mix I have, and I like it a lot. If the rest of their albums are as good or better then I shall most certainly get my butt happening down at the CD shop and find these albums. The other synchronous happening was that in the latest Australian episode of Northern Exposure, which I managed to catch last Thursday while trying not to "chuck a Mitch" :) and pass out on the couch, due to lack of sleep and a busy day. The episode was the most enjoyable yet.... I wholeheartedly retract any recent doubts I had about it. (It was the episode with Adam the wilderness man, and the guy from Baltimore (?) who motorbikes up to Cicely without knowing why and finds his brother (!) after a dream. I particularly liked the shared dream stuff and the sculpture.... cool. And the guy up in the firetower spending his life looking for fires out in the middle of nowhere, despite the fact that there are no firefighters to put one out even if he saw one.)
