Laura ======================================================================== Date: 8 January 1993 14:59:03 CST From: Subject: "You're a holiday...Such a holiday"--the Bee Gees I'm not sure why, but this is the first time in recent memory that I've seen large numbers of Christmas decorations still up as we enter the second week of January, as we move further through the sequence from Xmas to Xbris (cf. Mike Mendelson's commentary the other day on the scheduling of New Year's) to Elvismas to Footahmas (WRT which, have a happy) to, I suppose, Clinton Administrationmas. At this rate, it will be Katemas time again before we know it, to say nothing of Happymas (which, perversely, is also the anniversary of Nixon's resignation, while tomorrow is his birthday). The author of _Christmas with Elvis_ was interviewed on WBEZ this morning, and opined that the choice of the "young Elvis" stamp design by those voting on the issue was symptomatic with the national idolatry of youth and beauty, whereas choosing the other design would have affirmed to aging baby boomers everywhere that it's okay to be middle aged. As an aging baby boomer myself, I can only say that I never thought of that :-). On _CBS This Morning_ this morning, one of the hosts observed that the first letter with an Elvis stamp to come back marked "Return to Sender" is going to be worth a lot of money. I never heard of them before, but Angelos mentioned them and I figgered that I should catch them, since he's batting almost 100 with musical suggestions these days... The Story is incredible live - two women singing, one of them plays a guitar as well, and NOTHING ELSE. Unlike the studio recording they have on Elektra, "Grace In Gravity" which has lots of extra noise thrown in, and the voices aren't as clear or distinct as they should be. On recording, they remind me a lot of Suzanne Vega. Live they remind me of a less pretentious version of Indigo Girls (Apologies to any IG fans, but I really find them pretentious, and while I do enjoy SOME pretentiousness in music, this kind rubs me the wrong way). The title song, grace in gravity, tells the story about Jonatha's former dance instructor, who is black, and who visited south africa a few years ago, where he was in a car accident. He was with another man, who is white, and when the ambulance arrived, they took the white guy to a nearby place, and drove the dance instructor 75 miles away to a "saving place which takes your kind", and on the road, his legs became paralized, and now he'll never dance again. Not only is the story beautiful, but the song is too, even on the studio recording. Anyway, thanks to all who posted reviews of Dolby's new album... It's a shame that whatever brilliant inspiration he had 10 years ago is completley lost not, but I guess that's the way it goes. Hey, Vickie, chill! While the interview tape you're putting together will definitely be a valuable addition to Doug's list once it's done, we Ectophiles are, as far as I know, leading happy and fulfilling lives without it. Do it in your own time, we'll appreciate it when it's done, but we're not keeling over with the waiting for it. :) We are, however, getting increasingly more excited for the Equipoise release and its attendant Stuff- the imagination is running wild on this one! I think Laura has a very good hunch there- she may just have a deal to open for someone's tour- the question is, who??????? Now people are finding her early stuff in Sam Goody. Where is the real plane of reality, and what's been done with it? I have a post downloaded from GEnie by Bob Lovejoy, a rabid Happy fan from the Philadelphia area who discovered her via "Feed The Fire" and WXPN and ended up sitting next to Happy's mom at the Philly show. He's got the production company and materials all set to make the Equipose videos, and he's trying his best to get Internet access within the month so he can be a part of Ecto by the time the album comes out. He gave me permission to repost his notes to me if I thought they contained items of general interest, so as soon as I can get a connection to Wesleyan I'll upload it (this wonderful system doesn't allow for mail uploads :P). I just felt in a typing mood and I knew some of you would be interested in it, so here it is. Gyan is no Happy, but she is an interesting independent female artist. (Disclaimer: Any overused cliches and poor puns are the editors, not mine. In this post anyway. In the others they *are* mine. :) ) GYAN: IN HER OWN WRITE "This was a difficult second album," says Sydney-based singer-songwriter Gyan. Three years ago she created a sensation with her single _Wait_, and her self-titled debut album that won the 1989 Aria award for Best New Australian Talent. Now with the release of the follow-up _Reddest Red_ she reflects on the trials and tribulations of living up to her hard-won reputation and the development of her songwriting skills. "I'm not an easy artist, I've been told. I have this thing called diversity. I write in the way that I write and Charles (Fisher, the new album's producer) says that for him it's like making twelve different movies at the same time. That takes a lot of casting and a lot of thought and we're both meticulous and hate compromises, so we don't stop until we get it right." Originally Gyan wanted to record her second album overseas and set off in search of a big name producer. Her english record company assured her that it would be a big political plus to have a name producer on the back of the record. After interviews with Bob Clearmountain and Hugh Pagent, and finding out how busy they were and how much they cost, she headed back to Sydney to record with Trafalgar Records head Charles Fisher. Fisher - who is Gyan's close friend as well as the producer of her first album - had wanted to work on the second album but left Gyan to make her own decision. "Charles had his record company hat on and decided he could play the game of shopping for a producer. He really didn't want to, he wanted to make the record with me." After seven months recording before an intensive two-week mixing period in Los Angeles with engineer David Leonard, _Reddest Red_ was released in early October. Gyan is now touring Australia with guitarist Tim Gaze who plays on the record and will be appearing at the Fly By Night club in Fremantle on Saturday. [ach, bugger, that was tonight] Gyan sees _Reddest Red_ as a much more mature and polished work than her first album. Her songwriting has taken on global perspective without losing any of the intimacy and charm that characterised her earlier work. "I like the first album a lot," she said. "It was very personal and I suppose after going to London and Los Angeles I felt that everyone is so close to each other, there don't seem to be any walls any more. I felt that more than ever and I suppose it's come through in my songs." On the new album she tackles a number of serious themes such as the apocalyptical _Dancing on Doomsday_ and the despair of _Something's Gotta Give_. At the same time there is hope for a better world in _Good News_ and a plea for the sharing of feelings and emotions on _Mountain_. The earlier romantic themes she explored on her first album are further developed with the personal songs _Will I With U_ and _Thing Called Love_. Gyan hopes that _Reddest Red_ will present her as less of an enigma and more as a fully rounded character. "When the first album came out a lot of poeple picked up this image from the video of me as a lone caped waif on a hillside. That image was right for that song but interviewers couldn't see beyond it." "If people hadn't come to my shows then they would never have seen the other side of me. I was also amazed at the number of people who didn't think I was from Australia. The crew who worked on the video for _Something's Gotta Give_ thought I was from France. I had to kind of punch them on the arm and say 'look mate I'm a bloody Aussie okay'" Unlike many of her contemporaries such as Wendy Matthews, Jenny Morris and Margaret Urlich, Gyan is a songwriter first and a singer second. it annoys her that she is continually compared with artists who don't write all their own material. "I'm only in it to sing my own songs. I'm categorised with other singers but I always consider myself primarily a songwriter. They are two different things to me and my medium is writing. I'm bombarded by these comparisons and I've decided that I'm not going to buy into it anymore. I can only say thank god that someone had the sense to sign these girls because they are very talented." "It is a bummer, however, that we're all grouped together indiscriminately, because we're not a very big country and we are all fighting for air space. It is a horrible factor - the competition factor of the business - that I personally hate but all you can do is keep going and hope there is enough room for all of us." -- Ray Purvis. -- ,-------------------------------------------+--------------------------. | I'm a charming and dangerous guy, | Martin Dougiamas. | | Yes, I'm a charming and dangerous guy. | martin@cs.curtin.edu.au | | If you don't expect too much it's alright,| martin@dialix.oz.au | | But I'm in love with a beautiful girl | Perth, Western Australia + `== Robyn Hitchcock ========================+==========================' ======================================================================== Subject: Re: Northern exposure Date: Sat, 09 Jan 93 16:35:20 -0500 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu Chris (Boek, to be specific...) writes: >I almost never knew about this show until I heard >people talking about it on this group about 3 days before it started >showing here! How long has it been >going in the US ? i.e. Am I going to be destroying a budget trying to hang >on to them all? The first 1/2 season was something like 11 episodes. The show was such a hit that those 11 episodes were repeated starting in June '91. They ended in time for there to be a couple of weeks off before the 2nd (and first full) season started in September '91. That season had 23 episodes (of which I'm missing #8...grrr). The third season began in September '92 and is currently up to #11. I'm very annoyed with myself for not taping the first season (though I think I did tape the pilot when it was repeated last year). As I recall, the contract signed after the 2nd season for 3 more years (rather unheard of in TV series) so yes, you might eat through a lot of tapes. obHappy: I was driving home from kiting in the snow today when my _Rearmament_ tape finally decided that 2 years was its effective life span and that it was time to retire itself. I had no say in the matter. Fortunately, I was near one of the local places that carry Happy, so I popped in and splurged on the CD. Despite the fact that I'd listened to aboue 2/3 of it in the car this afternoon, the CD I'm listening to sounds fresh and wonderful and vivid and exciting and I'm really, really happy in case you hadn't noticed. Just two more to get before _Equipoise_ comes out. (I'm concerned that when _Equipoise_ comes out there will be a rush on Early Happy and I want to make sure I have first pressings of all of the 1st5). Interestingly, it really is almost exactly 2 years since I got my 1st4 on tape. I don't remember the date they arrived (though I certainly remember opening the package, seeing the monsters for the first time, and popping in VI!) However, the AG catalog included with the order contains a note from Kevin in which he appologized for the delay in sending my tapes (he and Happy both had the flu, and in fact they sent me the tapes unshrinkwrapped, feeling that the tapes were too late as it was). In any event, the neat part of the note is "Happy and I will be around Boston on Thurs. 1-24 mastering her new CD 'Warpaint' It should be out soon. We'll keep you posted." And now we get to experience the excitement again. Jeff ======================================================================== Subject: Today's your birthday friend.... The only Happy things I had before was Klaus' compilation tape and a tape of Warpaint that someone (Hi, ...) recorded for me. During the last year I was very short of money and I always found CDs to buy first. My favorite songs are Waking Up, Feed The Fire, Phobos, Terra Incognita, Words..., and In Hiding. Coincidentally, Warpaint is a jubilee CD: it is record no. 300 in my CD database (singles included) :-) Just to mention two Happy encounters: I found Warpaint in an import catalogue of a local record store chain (JPC). The prices are not listed but they are known for being expensive, I assume 50-60 DM (= 31-38 US$). Recently, I saw "Ghostbusters II" on TV. The license number of the Ghostbusters' car was "ECTO" followed by a number. As the subject points out, I was lucky to find a copy of Suzanne Vega's 99.9F limited edition. It comes in a very exclusive and costly cover, which is styled like an old photograph album or diary. The booklet, hiding in a brown cardboard slipcase, is a very thick black hardback with an imprinted leather pattern. It contains (on cardboard pages) the lyrics (printed like old placards, tickets, or advertisers), many nice photographs, and a hand-written diary entry (on transparent pages) which tells the story of "In Liverpool" (Suzanne, sitting in her hotel room, the church bells are clanging...). The CD itself is sticking in a sleeve inside the booklet and is styled like a tachograph disc with a 24-hour-scale and a red line on it (nothing else). I don't know the number of copies, but I think it's not very high. The dealer had only one copy and he said that it can't be ordered any more. (S.P. No.: A&M 31454 0026 2) Musically, I have to retract my opinion. After listening several times to it, it grows on me and I like the noisy sounds. That's all for now Greg, a belated Happy Birthday to you. I hope you had a nice day. Does anyone know if Gyan is available in my country? After Martin first men- tioned her some time ago, I inquired at several stores locally, none of which had ever heard of her. I've had similar problems finding Judie Tzuke's album; anybody got any ideas on that, too? Martin's mention of Jenny Morris brings back certain memories. After seeing the video of "Body and Soul" on the late, lamented _New Grooves_ in 1988, I bought the album. As often happens, the title track turned out to be more memorable than the rest of the album. For all that, her music was pretty good of its kind, albeit undoubtedly less memorable _in toto_ than Gyan's will prove to be, when and if I can get my paws on it. Angelos, did the list of tracks on the Tom Robinson compilation ever arrive? Turns out that my original set of tapes for the HGP finally arrived late last month at Vickie's box, after I'd mailed them at the beginning of the month. Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean that the _Poste L'Escargot_ isn't out to get me :-). I still wonder sometimes whether they're secretly owned by America On Line. As I was writing the previous paragraph, it occurred to me that the main office of the U.S. Postal Service is located on L'Enfant Plaza in Washington, and I got to wondering whether if their recent behavior keeps up, Francophilic wags, at least, will take to referring to their headquarters as L'Escargot Plaza? :-) Mitch ------------------------------- "Time is but the stream I go a-fishin in." --apparently not Norman Maclean (actually seen on a sign in the window of Barbara's Bookstore) ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
