Alan, please don't send stuff like that without at the very least warning people, or even better, asking people if they would like it emailed or made available via ftp. Anything really long should be warned about, at least. I sort of feel the same way about Vickie's relaly long letter - though she *did* warn us, I'm just not sure if we should simply make such things available. whenever it's big and a number of poeple on the list might not be interested, i ask people to think twice. A day or two ago, somebody asked about a song with a chorus that includes the phrase "But it don't heal clean" and I forgot to say what it was! The song "It don't Heal Clean" by Natalie Archangel (I still haven't decided it if's a cool or stupid (or, for that matter, real) name). They've been playing it on the local WHFS for around 2 months now, and for a while I was starting to get really freaked out because I'd hear the song every day or two AND THE DJs WOULDN'T SAY WHO THE SINGER WAS!!!! Very frustrating-- I wast still trying to decide if it was male or female voice! As a bit of side information, the song (album? dunno) was produced by Howard Jones, which is fairly clear if you listen to the song with that knowledge in hand. I'm not sure when the album came out; I saw it in the "New Releases" rack at Tower for the first time a week ago. However, the new releases rack is notorious for containing rather old releases. I dunno if it's still there, but a few weeks ago, REM's _Out of Time_ was in the rack, and that album is almost a year old. Gack! Jeff |Jeffrey C. Head? Martin here again already. Misc things: * Has anyone got/heard the compilation album "Requiem for the Americas"? It includes things like Jim Morrison reading poetry and Grace Jones doing an Indian chant, among much else. I heard a little of it on the radio the other night, and it sounded good. Reviews? I want to know if it's worth getting on import. * Can anyone spot where I got the little Mike Oldfield thing (with the voice saying "Happy") from? Genuine Oldfield lyric to the winner. * Aren't Dread Zeppelin Australian? * Angelos/Vickie, what's Eleftheria's album called? My dad really liked the HGP track, "Meno Ektos", as did I. He translated it for me, too. Anyhow, I'd like to hear more of her if I can. * Vickie, what's the reaction of your listeners to Gyan? * Mitch, keep up your posts (as if you were about to stop :) I can assure you that you have at least one person down here willing to negotiate his way through your labyrinthine sentences to get to whatever point it is you end up making. Now there's an idea! We could all get totally blotto for the HBP, I'm sure that would impress Happy no end. Even if we became alcoholics, I'm sure Ecto would make a great AA support group. * Is Happy herself an ectomorph? Mesomorph even? And how tall is she, what colour are her eyes, etc...? Jeff sent me a note which I am assuming he also sent to ecto. Jeff, it is amazingly bizarre that you mention Mary Mag Ohara in that note, in particular in the same breath as BBTB by JS!!!!! I just listened to BBTB *again* this morning and lo and behold wht should turn up on the old cd player *directly* after that but Miss America by MMO!!!!!!!!! Now, are we on the same wavelength or WHAT? MMO was one of the things vickie taped for me way back (along with kirsty, I reMcCall), and I thought it was interesting then. It definitely needs the right mood, but a few of those songs are superb. The thing she does best is set that tone... what an atmosphere-rendering recording MA is. Hmmmph. I've always thought of MMO as an "oldtimer" stylistically, though I can only vaguely put my finger on why. Yes, Wall of Death is a Richard Thompson song. Pick up an album called Shoot Out The Lights by Richard and his ex-Linda and you will become an instant fan. It surprises me not that SC covered this song, seeing as she's been spending mucho timo with old dicky T. My dad really liked > the HGP track, "Meno Ektos", as did I. He translated it for me, too. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Wow! Does your dad speak greek? The song has wonderful lyrics written by Lina Nikolakopoulou. I particularly love the 'Meno ektos, milao me sirmata, treho me tahitita fotos' which applies to the electronic communication we in ecto share. (which by the way means: I stay outside, I speak through wires, I run at the speed of light. I'm no english major but that's the best I can do to translate it. Once I get my CD back from Greg I'll translate the whole song. ) All the other songs have beautiful lyrics too. The album is called 'Meno Ektos' and was released in Greece last August (91). > Anyhow, I'd like to hear more of her if I can. Eleftheria has been around for a while. She started her career as the singer of 'Opisthodromiki Compania' (Backwards band) a group singing new versions of old 'Rebetika' songs. Rebetika are essentially greek blues songs that were written in the '20's when millions of greeks were forced to leave Asia minor, during the war. This influx of refugees (my dad's parents were among them) created sort of a culture shock on the greek mainland, and the sudden increase of population (10-20%) created a major crisis. The songs were about drugs, about love, about lust. They were considered a 'threat' to the society and most songs were illegal then. So in the early 80's the songs resurfaced and became popular to a whole new generation. But I have digressed... So after the rebetika, she left the band for a solo career. Judging from the complete discography of greek music (that surprisingly a friend of mine compiled) she has released 3 albums before 'Meno Ektos'. 'Eleftheria' (which I haven't heard), 'Contrabando' and 'Tanirama' (which I have on vinyl in Greece and on tape here). These two albums are a lot more synthesized than 'Meno Ektos' and both have some absolutely brilliant moments. I like 'Contrabando' the best, and next time I go to Greece I will check to see if it's out on CD. Martin, there is a huge greek community in Australia, and I am sure that if you look around the greek music stores you will be able to find her albums. I'm SO glad that you like her voice. I always feel that there is SO much talent in Greece, yet it gets lost because of the language barrier. Sorry for the length of this post, but today is registration day here at MIT, and I just don't feel too productive.
