I've been walking around campus (what am I saying, I never walk around this place- make that Running Around Like Mad) today, with _Ecto_ in the headphones. Now I'm doing that e-mail thing with _Rearmament_ going, and I must say it's a good way to spend a late afternoon! I'm still not able to write a coherent response to these two (and I've only heard Vol. II once), but I'm dangerously close to declaring _Ecto_ my favorite, yes, even above _Warpaint_. Wow. Nothing specific in _Rearmament_ has jumped out to grab me, but it's wonderful to have in the background. As I said earlier, more on this later, once I've had the time to analyze and find the time to write it all down. (Sorry, Vickie- :) ACK! Laurie Anderson somewhere in New England? Where? When? Someone help me- I refuse to not hear about a show of hers in New Haven until someone who went raves about it at me the next morning again, as was the case with the Strange Angels tour... Vickie, congratulations on completing the SiG, barring all disasters. If I can bring myself to go over to News (it takes my system a minumum of five minutes to get into it, and when it does it takes me straight to .gaffa, which these days isn't a nice prospect), I'll contribute to the Happy thread. Oooh- I don't know which song this is, but something Happy did with her voice just gave me a chill. (Live Happy-Listening Reports- only on Ecto! :) Thought I'd share that with you all. kIrI, I just noticed your chinet address. The main reason that I didn't subsribe is that I'm afraid of cluttering up my mailbox (I subscribe to several other lists already). I thought it would make sense to have the news software take care of this for me by creating a local newsgroup that was gated onto the mailing list. I checked with a couple of people around here and some of them said they might be interested in reading ecto if it were a group, so I went ahead with it. I had no idea that there was already a discussion of creating an ecto newsgroup and that my action could be taken as an attempt to force the issue. Anyway, think of ecto@blaze as just me with one or two possibly interested bystanders. -dave heath ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 27 Jan 92 18:26:10 -0500 From: gb10@gte.com (Gregory Bossert) Subject: welcome... and footahs to the introductorialy ecto@phantasmic dave heath!! -greg -- gb10@gte.com -- "if love is a game, i win..." -- HR ======================================================================== Date: 27 January 1992 15:22:43 CST From: Subject: More airplay for Happy? Ah well. well, ecto is a bit of a special case really. most lists are not this kind of family aroma (with the possible exceptions of a few that i can think of). the requestor probably had no idea that this was the case and that this concern would bother you. which leads me to a related topic: i wonder how many people are turned off by the atmosphere here. i imagine that there are those who would like to get happy news but without all the fluff and stuff that shows up from the regular posters. i'm not afraid to admit that i am somewhat turned off by the gushing that goes on here, but i can deal with it since i like and know the people, there are great fonts of info here and it generally is easier to deal with that gaffa or misc for the specialized topics that pop up. i would expect that there are others who would not want to put up with this though and have either left or not bothered. that's fine since the general opinion here seems to be one of a family anyways, but i do feel for the folks who left or not subscribed, missed out on the good stuff that is here cos of that. jeffy@lewhoosh.umd.edu sez: >It's not surprising >that I misread it because I'd just been listening to, um, think it was >V.II. listened to v.1, v.2 and ecto while driving home last night from mere- dith's. v.1 seems to be wearing a little thin now. i still love the biggies like "possessed" and "number one" and "the wretches gone awry", but the others seem less interesting now. v.2 has improved somewhat as well, but ecto took the cake last night. especially side b which is both simplistic but complex (don't think i can explain that too well myself). "ode", "poetic justice" and "don't want to hear it" are just plain sublime. what else can one say? >We finally had our first decent snowfall last night--around 4 or 5 inches. grrrr...jersey still is tantalizing me with sporadic 1/2 inch (that's 13 mm for our metric buddies) snowfalls. i want a *blizzard* damn it! drk@leland.stanford.edu sez: >Hi all. There seems to be a concensus among the most active Ectophiles >that Ecto not become a Usenet newsgroup. well yeah. but i never stated my reasons. like angelos, i oppose the fracturing of the rec.music hierarchy on artist divisions. if r.m.g were to go to a vote now for its creation, i would happily vote no since doing so would result in a flood of rfd's for rec.music.. in my opinion, that is ultimately bad for usenet. in the past few years, there have been votes on rec.music.rock, r.m.rush and some- thing else i can't remember. if these all failed (and they did), i'd wonder about the success of r.m.ecto. while that has nothing to do with my reasons for voting no and should not discourage anyone from trying to create the group, i will warn you that there is a sizable bloc of folks (loosely known as the erland cult) who oppose the non-sensical division of r.m.m. i've already thrown my cards in with them. so there. >The most obvious benefit is the exposure that Happy will gain. yes and no. through vickie's and other's endless promotion, anyone who reads rec.music.misc will already have gotten an earfull of info on happy. creating r.m.e will not increase that exposure sizably. secondly, newsgroups are not free. you may not pay for them, but someone has to pay for phone lines and such. a artist specific newsgroup can be viewed (and is viewed by some) to be essentially a commercial for that artist. and that is specificaly no-no'ed by many of the nets that usenet is now carried over. >This sounds wonderful but I think >that there is more than enough activity on this mailing list already to >support a full-blown news group. traffic does not alone justify creation of a newsgroup. it is a necessary requirement, but it is not a justification alone. >What about the Fuzzy Blue spirit? Will it be lost? Possibly, but I think >it is unavoidable. i tend to think so too (though it does not seem to bother me as much as it might bother others). but that is not reason to create a newsgroup. there are too many reasons not to try and create a newsgroup. mine may not be yours and vice versa - but that is to be expected. but i think that most of us agree that it would be a bad thing to do. woj - inhibition is the distance between thought and action - cable ready ======================================================================== From: kyrlidis@athena.mit.edu Subject: Quick winter poll Date: Mon, 27 Jan 92 23:56:33 EST Hi, woj's post about snow or the lack of it in new Jersey has triggered my curiosity. It seems that ectophiles share a love for the white stuff and for winter-like weather. Time to quantify. Email me if you like snow and blizzards, thunderstorms etc. by putting a YES SNOW or a NO SNOW in the subject line. The Poll is open til Friday and results will be announced on Monday. I am sure Mitch will inform us of the sociological implications of the results. Also, we were discussing the next Shiny Happy People POll with Klaus, so if you have any ideas/comments/suggestions let me know. The Poll will happen after the Happy Tour, when we will all be faced with the question: Which show was the best? I have listened to it constantly for two days now. The lead singer April sounds a lot different from when I saw them live. Her recorded voice sounds much lower. Otherwise they sound pretty similiar - which is a good sign. I highly recommend this album to everyone! :) On a Happy note...I think it was Jeff Burka, but im not absolutely certain, that said that Happy's music goes nicely with snow. Yes, I agree. I think it's the "in front of the fireplace" spirit shining through. Happy's music never fails to make me want to crawl up in a ball of blankets watching the snow fall, or the rain come down etc. Maybe it's because Happy's music just flows with nature in a sense. Since it is very emotional and soft it doesnt interfere with the surrounding moods, and since I always have seen snow as "soft" it makes perfect sense for them to blend well. Im sorry to hear about Happy's cat. If you talk to her again Vickie send her cats multiple meows from me. My cat has been through multiple surgeries so I kinda know what she must feel like. ______________ _________________ | | |hargieka@craft.camp.clarkson.edu | ^o o^ | | \\I// |-------------- ______ | -vv- _______ | _ | /\__/\ | | _^_^_ | | |< | | ) | | |oo| | | .OoO. | | | \ |o__)__( | | (___) | |______________ |______ \o | |_______| ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 28 Jan 92 01:25:11 EST From: jessica@cs.rutgers.edu Subject: aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!!! my hair is BRIGHT BRIGHT BRIGHT! get sunglasses! run, hide! i wanted blonde again and oh boy am i blonde. ooh! eek! mm just hda to let you know. i keep catching myself in the mirror and goign "ACK!" jessica ======================================================================== To join ecto, please send electronic mail to the following address: ecto-request@athos.rutgers.edu To have your thoughts included in the next issue, send mail to: ecto@athos.rutgers.edu To subscribe to "Ecto", the printed fanzine, send $8 to: Ecto PO Box 11291 New Brunswick, NJ 08906 Ecto is issued 8 times/year, and will include photos and as much material from non-net members as we can get!
