By the time I'd gotten to the front of the van, I'd become convinced that the license plate had read "6 ESTOS". Naturally, I walked back to check and found that it read "6 ESTOS". It's not surprising that I misread it because I'd just been listening to, um, think it was V.II. It was a weird sort of double take though, because I really only saw it out of the corner of my eye for a short time. I think I scared the tourists when I laughed out loud (I was on the Ellipse, behind the White House). A little further closer to the kite store, and by then I was singing "Beat It Out," largely because I'd forgotten to bring a walkman and it's a fairly easy song for me to sing--nice and low and no weird octave jumps. I had this wonderful image of Happy pulling her soul out of her body, laying it over a clothesline like a rug, and paddling it until all of the drears that were ground in and obscuring the beautiful butterfly patterns floated away on the breeze in big clouds of dust.... We finally had our first decent snowfall last night--around 4 or 5 inches. I went out for a walk while the snow was falling, listening to _Ecto_. What a wonderful experience. Happy and snow mix beautifully, as I would have expected. Jeff |Jeffrey C. There seems to be a concensus among the most active Ectophiles that Ecto not become a Usenet newsgroup. I'd like to make a case for rec.music.ecto. Ecto *should* become a news group, but not for a few more months at least (everything is IMO, of course). The most obvious benefit is the exposure that Happy will gain. Most folks have no idea who Happy is or that this mailing list exists. I myself heard Happy mentioned in passing on rec.music.gaffa and was interested enough to go back into the archives and read articles posted before Happy became a dirty word on Gaffa. Happy is now mentioned once a month in the Gaffa FAQ posting. Apparently a Happy discussion is taking place now on rec.music. misc. (our news server is down! Argh!). This sounds wonderful but I think that there is more than enough activity on this mailing list already to support a full-blown news group. It would be perfect to introduce rec.music.ecto at about the time Happy's new album is released. This will generate a productive discussion to launch the news group on a high note. (The 1st4 are due out on CD in a few months as well.) What about the Fuzzy Blue spirit? Will it be lost? Possibly, but I think it is unavoidable. Currently Ecto is dominated by about 10 very active people. Most Ectophiles, myself included, simply follow the discussion without mailing too often. As interest in this list grows the number of very active participants will grow too, and it is unavoidable that some of that Fuzzy Blue small-town feeling will be lost. Since Ecto is not a private club, some people that may be considered coarse or rude might choose to join. Unless Ecto decides to restrict membership, which is unthinkable to me, it will continue to grow and become more *like* a Usenet group, but without the benefit of luring-in curious browsers. So lets do it! Lets make the release date of HTR 6 the launch date of rec.music.ecto! "We're waking up. In fact the song "Feed the Fire" on _Warpaint_ is written for Kate and others who have inspired her music (yes Vickie ?). Also, Happy's higher voice bears an uncanny resemblance to Kate's. What >I wanna know is, should I get this? Um, let's see, I really like Kate Yes, I would highly recommend it. Of course, I have -zero- objectivity when it comes to Happy's music. I've been a major fan since 1988 and have been badgering :-) people ever since to give her a try. She's not for everyone (just as Kate or the Cocteau Twins won't appeal to everyone) but it's worth a listen, maybe 2 or 3, before you make up your mind. Anyway, if you don't like it you could pass it around to your friends and will eventually hit on someone who does. She appeals to a wide variety of people. Lots of Kate Bush fans like her (the mailing list was born from rec.music.gaffa) but people who don't like Kate like her too. She has a similar high range, but not as "shrill" as Kate. (Now, that's how I've heard it described, personally I love Kate's very high voice). Happy has an extraordinary range though, so her high voice is only one of many she uses. Her low voice is nothing like Kate's. This is good timing, I've meant to talk about Happy in the Women in Music- Indies thread but hadn't gotten around to it yet. She is a prime example of someone who had always done everything herself. She has 5 albums out and has never had a record contract, always paying for everything out of her own pocket. That is, she and her partner/co-producer Kevin Bartlett. She'll be playing in Philadelphia the 21st of March at the University of Pennsylvania and will have a limited tour after that (no dates are set yet) and that too is coming out of their pocket. She's not rich, they just have very good credit. Talk about "Indie" labels, Aural Gratification was started by Kevin Bartlett to record his own music and has been Happy's label since 1986. There is one other artist on the label, Mitch Elrod. 3 artists on a label is about as Indie as you can get. With the release of Warpaint, Happy and Kevin had hoped to have it picked up by a major label, but haven't had any serious offers. Now though, they are less inclined to sign with a major (except for distribution, which is very spotty) and won't unless the offer is so good they can't pass it up. Happy's following is growing daily (the net has helped tremendously, as has airplay in key cities such as Philadelphia via WXPN) and now they see no reason why they should compromise Happy's total artistic control just for a major label contract. It's very exciting to see this happening. Especially to an artist who's music I've been very deeply in love with for so long. There was a time when I was one of a handful of people outside Albany, NY who knew who she was, and now I log into rec.music.misc and see a question about her. It's downright surreal! And very wonderful! Her 1st 4 albums, currently available only on cassette, will be available on CD (another thing they are paying for themselves) in May if everything goes according to plan. >Bush, Cocteau Twins, and maybe Suzanne Vega, and I don't really care for >Patti Smith, Joni Mitchell, etc. (whatever I mean by that etcetera, I >have no idea). When the album first came out (last April) I got Rose Records and the Evanston Record Exchange to carry it, but now she has a local distributor (they called her, she didn't call them!) called Hits Unlimited to carry it. As far as I know, only the Evanston Record Exchange carries the 1st 4 cassettes.
