The prospect of hearing a new Patti Smith song makes me jump up and yell "yay!"- I read in an interview with her done after the release of _Dream of Life_ that she intended to devote the rest of her life to writing prose and poetry, and leave the recording studio forever behind her. I think she's come out with at least one novel since then and maybe some poetry as well (can anybody back me up on this?), but it's good to see she's not bagging music, at least not yet. What's the song like? Spent the afternoon hearing _Vol. II_, _Ecto_, and _Rearmament_ for the first time today- will post reactions as soon as I can figure them out. So far I think _Ecto_ is too wonderful for words, which is why this might take a while... :) *---------------------------------------------* | Meredith Tarr | | *** | | "Living in the gap between past and future" | | *** | | mtarr@eagle.wesleyan.edu | *---------------------------------------------* ======================================================================== Date: Sat, 25 Jan 92 20:43:16 EST From: jessica@cs.rutgers.edu Subject: ecto archives moved Ok, I've moved the ecto archives, and put all the back ectos in it - they are now located on hardees.rutgers.edu, in the same location. I'm missing digests 74 and 85!! Does anyone have them? I hope so. Please mail them to me, if you do. thanks! There's *tons* of space there, if you've got any gifs or anything of interest you'd like to make available, mail it to me or ftp it into hardees incoming area and let me know. :) jessica ======================================================================== Date: Sat, 25 Jan 92 17:48:30 -0800 From: Michael G Peskura Subject: Re: two questions 1. Should ecto be channeled into a newsgroup? Well, i'm a newcomer to ecto, but IMHO i like the community feel of an e-mail list like this. I'm probably just being a snot, but no i don't think turning it into a newsgroup is appealing. 2. What does the new Patti Smith song sound like? You'll be surprised, i think, Meredith. It's *quiet* in a very good way...almost like two people singing low into your ear. Nice. A question of my own: Has anyone seen the things Patti has written lately in print? I sure haven't; i sure want to. (wait *did* i already say it? Hmm i might have. it's been a strange week!) I just use the dictionary (thank god we've got the concise oxford 8th online) a lot. :) but seriosuly i'd never heard of ectomorph! it's too strange a cooincidence that it's a *real* word, I'd almost tihnk you broke in and edited my dictionary... so, if i'm an ectomorph and vickies and endomorph, then who is the mesomorph? jessica ======================================================================== Date: 25-JAN-1992 20:45:30.03 From: MTARR@eagle.wesleyan.edu Subject: Definitions and publicity Hi! Mitch, if you send me a dictionary, I might be able to give you a nomination for whatever mid-range Ecto-Goddess you were talking about. :) Jessica, the thought of Ecto as a newsgroup leaves me cold. The thought of it being a place where certain people (I won't mentioncynthianames) could waltz in with flamethrowers and wreak all sorts of havoc gives me chills. True, there's the publicity factor, but as you said we get enough mention on .gaffa and .misc anyway (and I must admit every time I see a mention of Happy on .gaffa, even in a .sig, I shudder and wait for the flames to leap up). So my opinion on this, for what it's worth: let's leave it as it is. *---------------------------------------------* | Meredith Tarr | | *** | | "Living in the gap between past and future" | | *** | | mtarr@eagle.wesleyan.edu | *---------------------------------------------* ======================================================================== Date: Sat, 25 Jan 92 18:15:54 PST From: stevev@greylady.uoregon.edu (Steve VanDevender) Subject: Re: two questions Given the current tone and nature of the ecto mailing list, I would like to see us continue the policy of adding any individual who asks, but NOT adding newsgroup distribution gateways as receivers of the list. In other words, list members should have heard about ecto and asked to receive its messages, rather than being able to see its messages without knowing about its charter. Perhaps having the FTP archive available isn't quite consistent with that rationale, but most likely anyone who knows about the archive had heard about it through the list. This doesn't preclude the possibility of creating a newsgroup or a newsgroup/mailing list gateway separate from ecto but also for Happy Rhodes fans. In fact, I agree with Jessica that it would have the advantage of better publicity for Happy. I suppose that some might say that keeping the ecto mailing list as a forum for the Happily enlightened is elitist, but a) we have quite enough volume on the mailing list right now and b) a bazillion "What is Ecto?" (as in "What is Gaffa?" in r.m.g) questions would kill the atmosphere here really quick. However, I (and probably many of you) would be more than Happy to answer such questions in a full-blown newsgroup. The sense of family we have here is worth protecting. ======================================================================== Date: Sat, 25 Jan 92 12:07 GMT From: Merow!! Hmmm funny that. I was just wondering the other day when I was checking out interesting albums at the station what the Karen Finley album was like. Unfortunately I never got to it, even though I was there for over 7 hours. Aww well too much other good stuff to look at first I guess. :) Tonight I saw Jamie Noterdamus (spelling is probably way wrong there but that's how you pronounce it I guess). It was a good concert, esp. since I wasn't on this plane so to speak :) He has a voice kinda like Paul Simons, but is quite young. Him and his acoustic guitar were quite wonderful....supplying us with folky tune after tune. Im pretty sure Woj has heard of him at least, because he is fairly popular up here in the cold recesses. On another unrelated note...anyone know how long it takes to sober up in -33 F temps...yep about 5-20 sec...believe me...:) On a Happy note...I just received my ticket for Philly! Yippie.... It is soooooo weird to see Happy's name on a concert ticket of the likes of big name arena bands. I can't wait, I can't wait, I can't wait.... Oh and I am very excited to hear of the forthcoming release of the 1st 4 on Cd.......this is wonderful news....!!! However, a few recent posts have prompted me to write. Vishal said (over a week ago): >Ooo, two of my favorites!! Hope you got Danielle's "Dark Adapted Eye". >If you like them, check out some of the music by "Sisters of Mercy" and >"Bauhaus". I heard Danielle was the opening act for SoM when they played >in Boston ? I have _Floodland_ by The Sisters of Mercy (if we're talking about the same group, you know, with the lead singer who is double-low contrabass?). It's the kind of thing that if you play it on your speakers that have their tweeters blown out from playing _The Kick Inside_ at maximum volume, you won't notice, because _Floodland_ is pretty much woofer-only music. However, I like it. Angelos asked: >Have any ectophiles seen Laurie Anderson's Voices from the Beyond show? >If so, I would appreciate any reviews. (No better critics than ecto-critics). >She is playing the Sanders Theater in February and I am wondering if I should >go. Back in April I was looking through the local student newspaper and saw an ad for "An Evening with Laurie Anderson". I said "Holy shit!" My officemate of the time, also a Laurie Anderson fan, wondered what was going on, so I showed him the ad and he also said "Holy shit!" I thought it was going to be something like a concert performance, forgetting that Laurie Anderson is first and foremost a performance artist. It ended up having only a few musical bits, none of which were songs from her albums, but she is a witty, perceptive, fascinating speaker and the show was a true delight. It was, as I found out during the performance, part of the "Voices From Beyond" tour. If you were thinking of going for the music, you might be disappointed, but I highly recommend it to hear Laurie talk about how she sees recent events with her distinctive wit and surreal humor. And then it was: >Vickie here. I'm short of time but I wanted to tell you that Happy called >me tonight and just *raved* about the HGP tapes. She was "floored and knocked >out!!" and those were her words. She was very touched and amazed, and she >will be writing something for Ecto about her reactions and to thank us. >Don't look for that for a few days, at least. She's waiting until she gets >the cassette inserts, and they were only mailed today. I am thrilled that the Happy Gift Project was so well-received. I can hardly wait to see what Happy has to say about it. It is really cool to see this group of fans be so thoughtful and creative in supporting Happy and giving her encouragement. In other stuff . . . The cost of a ticket to the Philadelphia concert is nothing compared to the airfare I'd probably have to pay, and I'm going to Los Angeles the weekend before that for a race, so I'll have my travel quota for the month filled. I know I'll hear all about the concert when you all get back to your terminals, and if with Happy's blessing we can get concert tapes I'll be first in line to order a copy. And if I should be unable to sit down and work on a message like this for another week or two, don't worry, I'm still reading everything. ======================================================================== To join ecto, please send electronic mail to the following address: ecto-request@athos.rutgers.edu To have your thoughts included in the next issue, send mail to: ecto@athos.rutgers.edu To subscribe to "Ecto", the printed fanzine, send $8 to: Ecto PO Box 11291 New Brunswick, NJ 08906 Ecto is issued 8 times/year, and will include photos and as much material from non-net members as we can get!
