They said it has never been easy to lose a child, yet somewhere I did lose her. She walkedto the edges of the cliffs falling down to the thrashing rocks her limbs cut open, bleeding into the grains of sand. I remember when she gave her heart out, keep it in a safe place she said. It may of been safe, but it wasn't free. I held out my hand to her, but she couldn't take it. There is still so much I must work through she said. Many months past. Then a new day came. That's when it happened. The water grew peaceful the licks of the saltwater tides gently grooming the sands, sealed her open wounds forgiving her pasts. The sun & moon held the earth in their hands lifitng the spirits of the dream child. Travel to the end of the Earth and back the voices said, feel the pores of forgotten lands soothe the starving souls led away by a past love Before, I held my hand out to her Now she takes hold breathing in deeply the call of the waters and the whispers of the growing trees, giving trees. I Am your child, she said Show me. I showed her our mountains, the tops covered with wildflowers, yellow and blossoming, tulips and wet snow. Valleys pooling in blueness and together we climbed. Angelos ======================================================================== Date: 10 Jan 92 17:15:12 EST From: Bob Brown <74756.1557@compuserve.com> Subject: I got my tickets! Hello everybody - I'm new to the ecto group and I'd like to thank Jessica for helping me get started here. I've enjoyed reading the mail that's passed to me via the Internet/Compuserve gateway. Needless to say, I am a Happy nut! My order is going to Albany this weekend for the 4 tapes...I can't wait to hear 'em. I first heard Warpaint on WXPN in Phila. Luckily, I get to listen to WXPN and/or my CD player in my office at work all day and I have a special liking towards Happy, Bush, Siberry, Sam Phillips, Innocence Mission et al. I've always been attracted to female artists, especially when they've got a unique style or something interesting to say. BTW, Feed The Fire was the #1 song for 1991 on WXPN! So everyone here knows, as has been posted by Vickie, tickets are on sale in Philadelphia for Happy on March 21 at the University Museum Auditorium! I purchased mine today via the ticket charge number which is (215)336-2000. You can charge them on your credit card. I can't wait!....and, it's the day before my birthday...what a gift! Unfortunately, the tickets are general admission. I've never been to the University Museum Auditorium, anybody know what kind of a venue this is? I was hoping she was going to be coming to the Keswick Theater in Glenside. I saw Patty Larkin, Christine Lavin, David Wilcox, and Chris Eberhardt there one weekend and Bruce Cockburn and Sam Phillips there the next. The Keswick is a great place to see these kind of artists. Jessica - I think it would be kinda neat to perhaps get everyone that's going to the Phila show together that afternoon for dinner/beers/whatever. Waddya think? Perhaps H+K would like to join us? Vickie - Nice to meet you...even if you don't know me :-). I knew about you. I was on a business trip to Chicago last year and I heard your show on the radio. Great show! We should get that out here....perhaps we should bug WXPN and ask if they could pick it up. Anyway, for your records, my birthday is 3/22/51, in addition to the above listed musical interests I like to listen to music on shortwave radio. I work as a microsystems manager for a electronics manufacturing company near Phila. From all what I read, you have my appreciation for all you do for the folks here. I'm a native of Chicago, born and raised there and lived in Arlington Heights for many years. I used to be in an acoustic group that used to play the It's Here coffeehouse near Loyola Univ. many years ago. Jorn, cute crosspost :-) Vickie ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 10 Jan 92 02:56 CST From: katefans@chinet.chi.il.us (Chris n Vickie) Subject: HGP **Finished!** Vickie here. I can't believe I made the whole thing... Wow! Unbelieveable! Amazing! Miraculous! The HGP1991 is done! Time for cartwheels and confetti....I'm pleased, relieved and very extremely HAPPY! I hopefully will be sending copies to Albany tomorrow. Heh...one reason I say "hopefully" is that I know myself and I know that the more I listen to the tapes as I'm dubbing I'll be tempted to start working on them again, fixing minor flaws (there are some, sorry) but especially changing my talking. I always *despise* my talking, I've got a good "radio" voice but in talking I always seem to sound either sluggish\dull or perky\silly. Finding a balance between the two is very hard for me, even after all the time I've been on the air. I'm also not very good at ad-libbing either, and it shows. :-) It's not too atrocious, but I just wanted to disclaim a bit. I sure wish everyone had sent messages, they were wonderful to hear, plus I didn't have to talk (unless the messages didn't mention what the song or artist was) so they were helpful. Still, I'm not going to touch the tapes, and once Happy's tape is in the mail I can breathe easy, knowing I *can't* go back and change anything. All in all though, even with my self-consious mumblings and minor glitches, I'm pretty proud of the whole thing. Again, it was *so* much fun to put together and I am looking forward to future H*Ps. I think Happy will be pleased and I think you all will be too. The amazing diversity of songs make for fascinating listening. Chris wondered about the wisdom of posting the playlists of these, disappointed that the "suprise" factor was being taken away. I don't see a problem with posting them, they make for interesting reading, as hopefully they will make for interesting listening. If you are (or will be) on the list to get the tapes, and don't want to know what's on the tapes (at least, the second tape, since the first list has already been posted) then you should save, but skip reading, this message right now. btw, "Save" is an operative word here, because I decided not to list the songs on the cassette inserts. My handwriting is pretty bad and I have no way to make printed inserts. I'll leave it to the individuals receiving the tapes. I will write the songs for Happy though, since she has no access to this list otherwise. I may get asked about this, so I should go ahead and address it. The tapes (well, mainly the second tape) have many of my own selections on it, so I'll talk about them and Jorn's. On the first tape I put the Victoria Williams song because there was room for something, but not a regular- length song. "Happy" is only about a minute long. I took the first spot on the second tape out of pure chance. Again I was just reaching into a bag to pick out whatever came next, from those who didn't make the first tape. The only thing I set aside on purpose was Jorn's selections. I knew I'd have lots of extra room and told him that he could go ahead with his 4 choices, but that they'd have to come after everyone else's. Someone might think "favortism" and they'd be pretty much on the mark :-). Jorn's a very close friend who has helped us out in more ways than I could begin to mention, but they include financial, psychological, and moral support, not to mention helping us move in when we first came to Chicago, even though we'd never met or even had much contact prior to the move. Saying this is not so much to defend letting Jorn have 4 songs, really, as it is to just briefly pass on my thoughts that Jorn is a great guy and a good friend. Besides, knowing I'd have the room on the second tape, how could I say no to Marta Sebestyen, Dead Can Dance, Delibes and Scott Joplin? wow! -- David Lubkin Steeleye Span - "Cam Ye O'er Frae France" David picked the group, I picked the song, my favorite by them. -- Barry Wong Mary Coughlin - "Coda\Ancient Rain" With his blessing, I picked the artist and songs. Coda is about a minute long. Out of the many on his "no problem" list, I chose Mary because very few people have heard her and she deserves a wider audience, especially in America, where 2 of her 3 albums aren't even available. The hard part was deciding on the songs, because I love just about all of them. These are slow and moody and really show off her voice. -- Valerie Nozick Enya - "Ebude\Book of Days" Valerie wrote with her song selections and I got them after I'd finished this side. Just bad timing, but I hope these songs are ok. Ebude was so short I added the second and they fit together so well. Kiri lent me this CD, so thanks Kiri! -- Harry Foster Lene Lovich - "The Night" Harry was another who got lost in the shuffle, though he signed up for HGP in December. I'm so glad I remembered him at the last moment. Nothing personal Harry, just brain-damage on my part. btw, I haven't gotten your tape yet. Did you sent it? Oh, Lene's "The Night" was Harry's choice, and I did have it in my collection. -- David Blank-Edelman Le Mystere des voix Bulgares - "Polegnala E Todora" I hope this is ok, since I didn't hear from you about your preferred artists or songs. This song is subtitled "(Love Chant)" and I chose it because you're a newlywed. Um, it also happens to be my all-time favorite Bulgarian Chorus song :-). -- Terry Partis Dave Stewart\Barbara Gaskin - "I'm In A Different World" Terry's wife has been ill and he's not had the time to become involved since he originally signed up for the HGP. I chose this song because it's a love song, and Terry has been very devoted to his wife during her illness. I chose a D&B song (well, it's a cover of an old 4 Tops song) to let Ectophiles who aren't familiar with them hear what they sound like. -- Genesis - "Horizons" -- Genesis - "Time Table" These were my alternate choices. Horizons is a very short, beautiful guitar piece. I had been wavering back and forth between the Anita Lane and Genesis. I finally figured that Happy is going to know the Genesis songs, but probably hasn't heard the Anita Lane. She may not like the Anita Lane, but at least she'll empathize with the lyrics. Once the song is distributed, I'll have to transcribe the lyrics. They're interesting. The Genesis songs are from the album "Foxtrot" and Steve Fagg used a bit from another song on that album in his message. I fiddled with it and I think Steve will be suprised. I'll let him tell you about it when he hears it. Ditto for Brian Bloom's message and song. These two were perfect to fiddle with. I hope they like what I did. -- Martin Denny - "Quiet Village" This was an alternate choice of Mitch's and he even recorded a second message for it. I'm glad there was room for it because we wouldn't ever get to hear it otherwise. -- Ofra Haza - "Galbi" I had gotten so used to this a being an alternate Klaus-who's-package- wasn't-ever-going-to-show-up choice that I had to put it on anyway. -- Riz - "The Empty Sky Impression" Since he's been the topic of a recent post of mine, I decided to throw this on here. This is an example of the kind of song that Happy would have sang backup on in 1988, when John and I almost got them together. It's also my favorite song on his album. Btw, unfortunately, the album is out of print and I don't think even Riz has any more to sell. Finding Riz's album in a used record store would be about as suprising as finding a Happy 1st4 in a used record store, possible, but extremely unlikely. 10,000 Maniacs - "Goodbye" A rarity sent to me be Bob Davis. *The* Bob Davis, who was responsible (along with Dore Stein and John Reimers) for me finding Happy. So, this cover of the Mary Hopkin song works well in two different ways. I realized after I'd recorded it and made multiple copies that I'd forgotten to mention the Bob Davis connection. Now you know. That's it....that's all folks....I'm glad it's done, but the Ecto SIG is next, and I am looking forward to June and July, when the HBP will be in full gear. By then, I doubt there will be any extra room on the tape, and it's very possible we'll need 3 tapes. Yippie! Lots more great eclectic music from all you wonderful people! He certainly sounds like he's concerned about filling the hall and said I should "tell all my friends". I've never heard of this fellow before and when I called WXPN yesterday the afternoon DJ didn't know Happy was coming. Bob Brown ======================================================================== Date: 11-JAN-1992 16:27:55.94 From: MasterMind Subject: Re: Valerie on Broadway First of all, let me thank Michael for using such a great title for his letter. I saw it, and my first thought was that I was performing on Broadway--certainly my dream, but since my voice resembles frogs drowning, not likely. Still, a nice title! No, I haven't seen the Red, Hot & Blue videos. When the album came out, i bought it, and was disappointed. some of the covers were great--too darn hot comes to mind. but most of them were disappointing. surely deborah harry could have done better. if you recommended it, though, i might be tempted to rent the videocassette. i'm not one of those people who is a 'purist' and can't imagine broadway being done by a mere rock singer. but i just expect something different to come out of it...too darn hot blew me away. made the sexuality of the song explode. i would actually expect the videos to be better, because sadly most of today's singers are more video than audio. i think rh&b was a great idea which didn't work for the most part. again, though, convince me that i should give the videos a try and i'll most likely do it. actually, i think that goes for most covers. i expect something *different* to come out of them, otherwise, what's the purpose of doing a cover? maybe this is my problem with rocket man & candle in the wind by kate. sure, they are different from the originals, but they just do not strike me as being different in interpretation, or being original. the reggae of rm is akin to what poison and whitesnake did for heavy metal. citw did not show me anything new about marilyn monroe, nor did it offer anything different about kate. hmm...looking at that, i expect my mailbox to be busy for awhile. :-) btw, michael, i do have one of the cole porter postage stamps. i keep it in my wallet wherever i go! was there a whole series of them? all i remember is that last year i was at the post office buying a stamp, & they showed me the ones available. when i saw the cole porter one, i ended up buying one more stamp than i had intended. as for chess, it's good to know that there is another fan out there. i find that among broadway aficionados, there are more 'closet' chess fans than not. odd, since the real version was never performed in the united states. i saw the broadway version and the touring version, but haven't seen the london one. if only someday i could direct the london version here... if you haven't heard of it, it includes one night in bangkok, the song which was a hit here in the states a few years ago. now, how many other songs from musicals have hit the top 40 in the united states, or even the world, in the last decade? remember back when a cole porter song or a gershwin tune would be played all over the radio. i wish i could have been alive in those days. now i'll come down from my platform. after all, this is a group about *happy*, not musicals, right? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Valerie Nozick "Is there so much hate for the ones we love? vnozick@eagle.wesleyan.edu Tell me we both matter, don't we?"--Kate Bush ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ======================================================================== To join ecto, please send electronic mail to the following address: ecto-request@athos.rutgers.edu To have your thoughts included in the next issue, send mail to: ecto@athos.rutgers.edu To subscribe to "Ecto", the printed fanzine, send $8 to: Ecto PO Box 11291 New Brunswick, NJ 08906 Ecto is issued 8 times/year, and will include photos and as much material from non-net members as we can get!
