Of the three bands, I thought Arson >Garden were the best, and I had never heard them before last night! glad that you enjoyed them! and muchos gracias on the info - will have to keep an eye peeled for the album. and no, i have never heard of vertebrae records either... jeffy@lewhoosh.umd.edu sez: >It sounds to me like one of Karen Peris' major influences is Jane >Siberry. She also reminds me a lot of Mary Margaret O'Hara--but the way >MMO'H *should* sound. karen sites KaTe and peter gabriel as her biggest influences, but then, that may be just what the record hype sheet leads you to believe. my feeling on the matter is that pete and KaTe were her influeces and that her sound, which is similar to jane's, is really her own. >What was(were) the single(s) from this album? the first single was "black sheep wall". that was followed up with "i remem- ber me" and "wonder of birds" was released as a promotional 12" to radio stations, but not released as a single. >When I wrote about that annoying metronome sound, I was actually thinking >of "Curious," not "Mercy." i've been listening to this album since the week it was released and never found that noise distracting. in fact, "curious" is probably my favorite track on the album, closely tied with "surreal". then again, i rarely do listen to it on headphones either, so i will go do that later. after i've gotten some sleep, you know... :) > Now I want to go get _Umbrella_! Oh well...there's plenty of >time for that. _umbrella_ is good, but, well, it was a disappointment to me. it's less varied in its sonic appearance. the songs have really blended into each other, with a few exceptions. also, the themes are less interesting as well. but don't let my doomsaying disassuade you. fans of perfect pop music are hereby commanded to go investigate britain's field mice (the band, not the creatures!). they are on sarah records, which is a single-only label. but recently, sarah succumbed and released a couple cds collecting the singles in one place. i picked up _coastal_ a few weeks ago and it is plain *wonderful*. and finally, wendy maharry has a new release out called _fountain of youth_. in the process of listening to it the first time right now, but what i've heard so far is in the similar vein of her first one. more later (after i've slept you know... ;) okay. sleep. now. g'night. woj@remus.rutgers.edu - "my master was truly sharp" - _the name of the rose_ ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 6 Jan 92 07:36 CST From: katefans@chinet.chi.il.us (Chris n Vickie) Subject: Nice party and Huh? Vickie here. Had a great time at the party Saturday! Thanks Jorn, Kiri, Mitch and Chip for coming, thanks Greg for calling...nice suprise! Jeff-with-the-long-black-hair, why in the world *should* Mary Margaret O'Hara *sound* like Karen Peris? I think she sounds just fine as Mary Margaret O'Hara. She's (obviously) not for everybody, she's a bit weird and very off-center in her lyrics, vocal phrasing, music and atmosphere. Fine, very fine indeed, by me. What you said is just like someone trying Kate and Happy for the first time and saying "Kate reminds me a lot of the way Happy sounds, but the way Happy *should* sound".......eh?....huh? Anyway, glad you like IM's first album. It's my favorite, though I love both. btw, though Karen is a big Kate Bush fan, Jane Siberry is her #1 favorite. When you get _Umbrella_ be sure to listen for Jane's line "flap and fly" in the song "And Hiding Away." Vickie ======================================================================== Date: 6-JAN-1992 21:42:15.68 From: MasterMind Subject: Incredible! So much for me keeping in touch with the group over break. I got home, and the next day was in bed with the flu. No driving 45 minutes for me. :-( But then again, it made coming back and finding 75 messages waiting for me that much more fun. (Sorry to everyone who probably had their letters bouncing back because of me...if I had known, I would have desubscribed.) I did listen to Warpaint 20zillion times while in bed, though...:-> Thanks, thanks, thanks, vickie, for adding another tape to the HGB. Which song were you able to put on for me? I hope you weren't waiting for 'Amarillo by Morning', and sitting there frustrated because I couldn't be reached by email. If you were, my apologies flood your screen. When did the tape get sent out? Oooh, you've got to let us know her reaction to it! I'm still anxious to check my mailbox to see if I got an xmas card from H&K (is that incorporated? 8-) ). Again, hopefully my address got onto the list. I love surprises! Well, I realize it's a little late to get in on the bandwagon of xmas & new year's plans, but here's what I did(n't) do...Let's see. I spent christmas with my mother, which was wonderful. and in sunny southern california, which is just as nice. we mostly sat around the house, reading books and doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles. sounds like heaven to me! there's nothing more intimate than doing a jigsaw puzzle with someone you love. Sounds crazy, but it's very peaceful. Then for new year's i saw little man tate and went to a friend's house for a party. alright, but i'd have preferred to be back at school with my friends here, to tell the truth. Anyhow, it certainly wasn't as exciting as seeing his name is alive! Vickie, Kiri & i-forget-the-name-sorry!, you are so lucky! There was no one interesting playing s. ca. over new year's. It's a shame that they are so horrible in concert--livonia is a fantastic album, and it deserves a better rendering. 1992--the year that happy tours and kate releases another album? one can only hope! I know what I want kate's new year's resolution to be! i hope everyone has a great 1992! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Valerie Nozick "Is there so much hate for the ones we love? vnozick@eagle.wesleyan.edu Tell me we both matter, don't we?"--Kate Bush ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 6 Jan 92 15:58 CST From: vickie@chinet.chi.il.us (Vickie Ann Mapes) Subject: HGP Suprise Vickie here. Good news and bad news. Good news: In the mail Saturday was a pick-up slip saying I had 6 packages at the Post Office. Of course, I got the slip *after* the PO had closed for the day, so this morning I went and got packages from....Klaus/Claudia, Brian Bloom (both that you sent), Bob Kollmeyer and the Wendy MaHarry CD I'd signed up for weeks ago. Bad news: Stephen Thomas, your package wasn't there. The slip said 6, but they only found 5. Bacause I knew tapes were waiting at the PO, I didn't work on the HGP yesterday. I will record the last 20 minutes of the first tape, to include Brian's message, and Klaus & Claudia's messages and original song choices. Then I can start work on the second tape. , the "I'm *really* going to finish this thing _____" days keep getting set back, but I will have the tapes in the mail to Happy in the next few days come hell or high water. I have radio shows to record, a friend's birthday party to attend, laundry to do, and other stuff, so right now it's up in the air exactly when I'll get this thing finished. I know one thing though, and that's that if I get a bee in my bonnet to *finish* it, I will. Enter Ectoma scold mode: I'm not waiting for anybody anymore, so David Blank-Edelman, Barry and Terry Partis, get your choices to me (not tapes, e-mail lists) or you'll be left out, and I don't want that to happen. I want everybody who wants to, to participate. If I don't hear from you (I don't even have any idea what songs/artists you are even considering for the HGP) I'll pick something myself for you. Anyone else, not previously involved in this, is welcome to submit a list of songs/artists you would like to expose to Happy and send me a list via e-mail *NOW*. If I have one of the preferred songs in my collection I'll play it. If not, but I have other albums, I'll choose a song myself. Please give me a few choices to work with. Send tapes if you want a copy (or copies of both HGP tapes), but I can't wait for any more tapes to arrive first, so don't worry about recording your song(s) and sending them to me. If your list arrives after I've already recorded the second HGP tape, I'll let you know. You can be part of the HBP. Time-wise, this has already gotten *way* out of hand. I *do* want to do this again, don't anyone misunderstand my scolding. I can't say enough how cool this whole thing is to me. I honestly want to make this a twice a year tradition. It's just that SnailMail snafus and participants procrastination have left me somewhat exasperated. Does anyone remember that this was supposed to be a *Christmas* present for Happy? Ok, Solstice for some, Holidays for others, but still.... I'm already going to set a deadline date for the Happy Birthday Project (HBP) because her B'day is more important than Christmas. That one *will* get to her on time. To assure that, I have to be strict. The deadline is *JULY 1, 1992* so please don't wait till June 28 to send your tape or July 15 to decide what song you want included. Btw, the deadline for HGP-1992 is *November 1, 1992* Ok? Now go clean your rooms! ...Exit Ectoma scold mode... :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) Now, when this started we didn't know that it would spill onto a second tape. I wanted Happy to hear the songs from *everyone* who wanted be part of this, and so I decided to do a second tape on my own. If anyone wants a copy of the second tape, you know what to do. Send a 100 min. tape with postage, and you'll get it. All tapes received without postage will become part of my blank tape collection. I hate to be strict about that too, but I'm a poor lady. As it is, packages to send the tapes back are coming out of my pocket. Actually, to be more precise, other Ectophiles, those who are sending money over and above the amount needed, are paying for the packing. Unless you sent money or a return package, when you get your HGP &/or Ecto SIG tapes, give thanks to people like Klaus & Claudia, Steve Fagg, Vishal, Martin & Perttu, who sent more money than needed. This post has had kind of a "frowny" feeling to it, and I don't mean to sound snippy or bad moodish, it's just that, as these projects continue, and others pop up, there has to be some rules to them, some sort of order and continuity. Ecto SIG was my idea and I volunteered for the HGP. I don't regret either, and I will gladly, cheerfully, head future similar projects, but if you saw my dining room, you'd understand that these things can be a nightmare if not kept organized in all aspects. Not that I'm Miss Organi- zation, I'm disorganized by nature, but these 2 projects have made me take organization more seriously. I still lapse every now and then, but I am trying very hard to keep on top of everything. Lapse confessions: forgetting to add names to the HGP Update I posted is one. The other is extremely embarrasing. Woj sent his HGP tape first. It arrived *days* before anyone else's and I didn't yet have a place set aside for the HGP tapes to go (like I do for the Ecto SIG tapes). As more tapes started arriving I put them all in one place. I realized that Woj's tape was missing. I searched all over the place and just could not find it. Our apartment's a mess, but still... it seemed to have just disappeared! Pooh! In desperation I went to the Record Exchange in Evanston to get a dub of the Sonny Sharrock song from my friend Bill, who manages the store and had the CD. Bill is just the sweetest guy you could ever hope to meet. Then and there, in the store, he *gave* me the CD as a Christmas present! What a wonderful guy! You can guess the rest of the story...Woj's tape turned up a couple of days later! The cats, who have a great love of knocking things onto the floor, had batted it off the table, then under some other things. Ho ho...but I have the CD now (and it's a good one too) so my disorganization had an unforseen benefit. Other than those two things, I've done pretty well keeping track of all the tapes I've gotten. Any rules I make or hard-line attitudes I have wrt future projects are only because I need to keep everything as simple on my end as possible, so the projects will run smoothly and Happy will get her Gift on time and everyone else will get their copies in a timely manner. I know, the Ecto SIG has taken forever, but I really wanted to put the World Cafe interview and songs on it so I delayed it for weeks. Now that I have that tape, my only excuse is setting that project aside to concentrate on the HGP. I suspect the Ecto SIG will get done within the next couple of weeks. That's it. If any new Ectophiles just read through all that and haven't the faintest idea what I'm talking about, I'll post an updated Ecto Projects list. Vickie ps, Klaus and Claudia, if my e-mail doesn't get through, thank you for the Christmas present! pps, "vickie" is still working, but e-mail to "katefans@chinet.chi.il.us" just in case. ======================================================================== To join ecto, please send electronic mail to the following address: ecto-request@athos.rutgers.edu To have your thoughts included in the next issue, send mail to: ecto@athos.rutgers.edu To subscribe to "Ecto", the printed fanzine, send $8 to: Ecto PO Box 11291 New Brunswick, NJ 08906 Ecto is issued 8 times/year, and will include photos and as much material from non-net members as we can get!
