It sounds like you all had a great time in Boston & NYC - it brings back memories of my visit to Boston ... which, coincidently, is where I managed to get my first listen to Happy! Chuffed ... hmm. Well, you know that feeling when something unexpectedly nice happens to you? That's what "chuffed" means. It's about the same as "it made my day", or a warm fuzzy [blue :)]. Also, it describes the feeling when you put some effort into doing something nice, and it works out better than you'd ever hoped. It's a nice word, I think - warm and cosy, rather like the feeling itself ... I was up until 3:30am this morning, seeing the New Year in at a friend's party. In fact, since my colouring is dark, I was briefly thrown out, so the first person entering the house is a dark person with a lump of coal (don't ask me ...). Trouble is, they didn't have any, so I had to pretend this lump of confetti-like stuff was coal :-). See ya later, everyone! Date: Wed, 1 Jan 92 14:54:40 CST Vickie here. Hey all, Happy New Year to you. Kiri and I went to see the concert last night and had a pretty good time. Of the three bands, I thought Arson Garden were the best, and I had never heard them before last night! I met the lead singer (April) before the show and told her aobut all the comments on the net from Greg, Jeff Burka and woj, so she knows your names now...she was pleased that someone had heard of them. She's very nice. The album (not EP) will be coming out the beginning of March (if everything goes according to plan) and will be called _Wisteria_. A single should precede that and it's called "Impossible Space." They did that song and it's a good one. It will make a great single. The album will be on Vertebrae (sp?) Records. I was very happy that they were so good in concert. If they'd been awful or mediocre I would have felt so bad saying so. They had some feedback problems throughout the set, but it didn't detract from how good they were. Kiri's review: "They were _wild_ and _loud_...I *loved* em!" The audience did too!" His Name Is Alive were excruciatingly boring. It's too bad, but they fairly destroyed the high energy atmosphere that filled the room after Arson Garden played. The music (which Kiri and I both agreed we'd probably like on record) was too dirge-like and the band on stage were fairly silly (way too pretentious) and also boring. Too bad. Kiri's review: "They would be OK if the would just SHUT UP and if they weren't so pretentious." The shut up refers to one of the members of the band who spent more time talking about the band than playing music. This is the second time I've seen them live. I might buy the albums, but I probably won't go see them in concert again. Big Hat were good, as usual. I've seen them in concert *many* times, and always like them, but last night they still weren't as good as Arson Garden. This is the second time where the opening band blew them away, the first being The Psychowelders/Big Hat a few weeks ago. I'd love to see a double bill of The Psychowelders and Arson Garden. They would compliment each other perfectly and it would be great. Kiri's review: "There's only one word for it-Supercalifragilisticexpealidocous!" She liked them! So, in one night we had melodic alternative rock, deathly dull pretentious art rock and 23rd Century Rennaissance music. Plus free champaign and lots of confetti. Pretty good night, all in all. Greg and Jessica, I *very* much enjoyed your "Vagabounds in New York" stories! I was jealous and wished I could have come along, it sounded like so much fun! Thanks for the posts. I can't wait to hear Klaus and Claudia's versions! And Angelos. What a great time! Gotta go do my show for tonight. I'll see you all later... By now the ecto-NY-adventures have been reported. It was great! Thanks to Greg (especially for driving while listening to Lene lovich skipping all over the place in the bumpy highways of Connecticut without complaining), to Jessica (especially for the wonderful ferry ride idea and the tour description (I now know where to find acrylic stuff in NY :-) :-)), and to Klaus and Claudia without whom I doubt this would have happened! I had a very memorable and fun night! and I FINALLY went to New York!! You wouldn't believe the following piece of info though... When I told some friends visiting from Greece that we went to a really good french fondue place, they went, was it 'La fondue' and promptly took out matches to show me!! They visited NY for 2 days, stayed in a hotel right next to it and liked it so much that's all they ate while in NY. I was TOTALLY in awe. Imagine the coincidence!! Vickie, please let us know about the Philly dates ASAP! I HAVE to get tickets to that show (among others...) And about 'Poetic Justice'. Tell Happy to PLEASE play that song live! They are truly wonderful live. Most of the band used to live in my dorm at college, and long before I ever heard the band I used to hear stories about "Mike and Apey" (Mike being April's boyfriend...) from a friend of mine who'd lived in the dorm a year before me. Halloween '90, Arson Garden played in my dorm's cafeteria. I was standing (dancing/singing-along) about 5 feet from April, next to one of the stacks of speakers. Totally beyond intense. I can't wait for the new album to come out! Any info on Verterbrae Records? Their last album was recorded at Paisley Park and released on Community 3. I wonder if they'll get more promotion this time...and if they'll be passing through DC on tour. Listening to _Under Towers_ always makes me school-nostalgic. ------------- If the communal "you" haven't bought/heard _Until the End of the World_, the soundtrack from the new Wim Wenders film, rush out and buy it NOW. This is certainly one of my 5 favorite albums from '91 (which was a banner year for good albums, what with superb releases from Happy, U2, R.E.M., Fish, and many others). The album is close to 70 minutes long, with 19 tracks. 18 of them are previously unavailable (and the previously available track is "Until the End of the World," by U2, from their latest album...). One of the big appeals to Ecto/Gaffa folks is the new Jane Siberry song, "Calling All Angels," which features kd lang on BVs. Coincidentally, that song just started playing as I started to type that last sentence. It's very, well, Jane. Not terribly reminiscent of anything I've heard by her, but still very, very, Jane. In the female vocals department, there are also tracks by Neneh Cherry and Julie Cruise. Annnnnd, stuff by Talking Heads, Lou Reed, REM (with Kate Pierson on BVs), Elvis Costello, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and too many others for me to remember. Well, I've thought about it and I'm going to finish the HGP this weekend one way or another. I doubt Priority Mail would get here in time and Express Mail is so expensive. What song(s) were you thinking of? If I have one of them in my collection I'd be glad to put it on the second tape under your name. If you want to leave a message the answering machine offer is still on. It comes down to the fact that I *have* to put a deadline on this sometime, and get the tapes mailed off to Happy. I can't wait forever for the missing tapes to arrive. Before we know it it will be a HBP (Happy _Birthday_ Project, which maybe we *should* start thinking about :-) so I have to put an end to this project. If you can mail me before Sunday (which is when I'll probably finish the tapes) with your songs, and if I have them, you (and anyone else who wants to be part of the second tape) can be included. Be sure to include a few choices. I may not have any of them, so give me a list of artists that I can choose from to pick the song of my choice. Example: David Lubkin gave me a fine list of songs by artists such as Steeleye Span and Renaissance. I have albums by those artists, but, as luck would have it, not the ones that contained the particular songs he wanted. He said play my choice from the albums I did have. Now, that's not a totally satisfying solution, he's not getting the songs he wants and he's not picking the songs himself, but at least he's getting the group played. He can save his first choice for the next HGP (or HBP) and get it played then. Our system being what it is, I couldn't really go through a "you have this? what about this? how about this? well, what album *do* you have? give me a list and I'll tell you which song" kind of thing. What if our e-mail screwed up again? Basically, I need a good number of things to choose from, be them specific songs or groups/artists, so I can finish the project Sunday. Next time we'll start on this earlier and I'll more strict with the deadline. That gets me to thinking, what *do* people think about doing this again for Happy's birthday? I very much enjoyed putting this together and it would kind of be a shame to wait a whole nother year before doing it again. Why not a twice a year tradition? I'm up for it! You know more than I do, sorry. I'd never heard of Vertebrae Records. She did say that it was a new label, but that's all. I gave her my name and address to get a copy of the next record. I hope she doesn't lose it. > If the communal "you" haven't bought/heard _Until the End of the World_, > the soundtrack from the new Wim Wenders film, rush out and buy it NOW. > This is certainly one of my 5 favorite albums from '91 (which was a banner > year for good albums, what with superb releases from Happy, U2, R.E.M., Fish, > and many others). > The album is close to 70 minutes long, with 19 tracks. 18 of them are > previously unavailable (and the previously available track is "Until the > End of the World," by U2, from their latest album...). Annnnnd, stuff by Talking Heads, Lou > Reed, REM (with Kate Pierson on BVs), Elvis Costello, Nick Cave and the Bad > Seeds, and too many others for me to remember. I have the Jane song (Sue sent it to me on a compilation tape) but not the entire album. It is a good song. The only problem I have is that kd tends to adjust her vocals down when singing with anyone else. She doesn't use her "powervoice" at all. Without a good ear, well tuned to kd's voice, you'd never know it was kd at all. That kind of thing reminds me of 10000 Maniacs song "Trouble Me" which featured an incredible power singer, Jevetta Steele ("Calling You" from the Baghdad Cafe soundtrack) and I couldn't tell it was Jevetta at all! I wouldn't have believed it was her if I hadn't read the liner notes. Her distinctive power voice was muted for the song's sake. Why use powerful singers and then not let them rip? The choice of song is very important. Jevetta didn't belong on "Trouble Me" as much as she belonged on a song like "Hateful Hate." "Calling All Angels" is a somewhat different situation, I realize. However, if Jane were using kd on a song on her own album, I'd hope she'd put her in a song that could utilize kd's very distinctive power voice. Whatever, it's still a great song. I heard Jane sing it in concert last year and I loved it then too. Besides, no matter how the voices are used, it's still *wonderful* to me that 2 of my favorite people have worked together. They go way back, I think. I certain ways, anyway. For instance, Jane's current keyboard player, Teddy, used to play keyboards for kd years and years ago. Jane and kd even toured together for a while. Jeff, oh no... > (who was given 2 weeks notice yesterday; laid-off, not fired, fortunately, > but that distinction isn't terribly important to his bank account) I'm *so* sorry! I can empathize, believe me. Damn! Well, hopefully you'll find another job soon. Hey, maybe here in Chicago! Yeah! I want *all* Ectophiles to move to Chicago!
