I think needs to be brought to Atlantic's attention. That's just no right, damnit, and it's NOT FAIR! ;-) >car dub right now (forgive me richard and missy) so i can listen where i >listen best. :) Hunh? the Caldwells don't approve of dubbing a CD for the car? What...they want you to buy TWO formats? It's neat that they got a listing in the liner notes for RDT... I wrote, last night: >>Incidentally, I've now heard 5 tracks from _Under the Pink_ (even if I >>don't have it) and, well, sorry, KaTe, sorry, Sarah, Tori's just blown you >>two out of the water. To which Woj responded: >which five songs are (were) they? the five tunes on the sampler tape that >meredith got from anthony were very strong ones and i can see where one >might think that _under the pink_ would take out _fumbling towards ecstacy_ "God" (of course), "Cornflake Girl" (I had many listens to those), "Past the Mission", and then the live versions of "Baker Baker" and "Icicle" that were performed live on the radio last night (that syndicated show that was mentioned either here or in l-h). Of course, now I've heard the whole thing (now in the midst of my second listen) and there's still absolutely no question that this is vastly superior to _Fumbling Toward Ecstasy_, and album which I might think were great if it hadn't been by Sarah McLachlan (it simply doesn't compare to the first two. I've had FTE for over a month now, and it *still* hasn't grabbed me, despite 10 or 20 listens. Don't get me wrong...I do *like* it loads 'n loads. There are some incredible songs ("Good Enough", "Fear," "FTE") but I don't think it's *nearly* as good musically as the others and I don't think she's using her voice to as good effect either. It's no chore to pull out FTE, but I've certainly not become obsessed with it. Of coures, there's no way in hell I'll miss Sarah's tour when it hits DC next month... ;-) UtP is a lot more experimental than LE ("The Waitress", "God," "Space Dog") but she also revisits, extensively, what I feel are her strongest arrangement styles...solo piano (or solo piano with minimal backing synth) and piano with strings. And yet Tori is musically innovative enough for the songs that have similar arrangements to those on LE to be fresh and new. Notes of interest: Most of the songs on UtP were mixed by Kevin Killen, a name which should be rather familiar due to his work on _The Sensual World_ and _So_ (amongst others). Those which Killen didn't mix were mixed by Ross Cullum. That may not be quite as familliar a name, despite the fact that he's been mentioned in a song I'll bet every one of you has heard: "We can sigh, say goodbye, Ross and his dependencies." What, you can't place that lyric? Well, here's another hint, the previous line, which mentions the executive producer of the song/album in question: "We can steer, we can near, with Rob Dickens at the wheel." Still lost? Okay, okay...it's "Orinoco Flow" by Enya. Yeah, Cullum mixed _Watermark_. Wow. This is *such* an amazing album (listening to "Cornflake Girl" again). Woj, obviously, my opinion has not changed not that I've heard the rest of the album. I hadn't even heard such amazing tracks as "The Wrong Band," "Pretty Good Year," "Bells for Her," or "Yes, Anastasia." "Father says bow your head like the Good Book says Well I think the Good Book is missing some pages..." Unfortunately, finding quality such stuff is rare, and thus always a treat. I picked up _Let's Knife_ by Shonen Knife due to an intriguing review, and found it bloody cracked and wonderfully brilliant. Unfortunately, I have no idea whether that was intentional. It reminds me of whomever talked the LA Olympic Committee into accepting Randy Newman's satiric "I Love LA" as its theme song. The person either had a deliciously warped sense of humor or was completely (if wonderfully :) ) clueless. Shonen Knife is a group of three Japanese girls (which is why I feel free to talk about it here, though it is not your typical Ecto fodder :) ). Their music is built around what probably could be called punk- flavored power pop. Musically, they borrow (even blatantly steal (Anyone who can't identify the chorus in "Burning Farm" should have their record collection confiscated. :) )) items from other songs, groups, and styles, then put them together in odd ways which work! Their lyrics range from the inane through the nearly profound, often within the same song. Yet is this just three naive Japanese girls, taking American culture and other things they don't understand out of context and putting them together just because it sounds good? Or is there some real wickedly brilliant warped intelligence lurking here? Or (as I'm leaning towards) an even more warped combination of the two? Let me give a couple of examples. Tiny touches of many other styles infect their music, often in different and even bizarre combinations, such as a punk beat with surf guitar. Don't they understand the context? Then later they pull off "Milky Way", an straight surf instrumental that Dick Dale would be proud of (albeit with a slight Japanese harmonic accent), showing they do understand. In "Black Bass", one verse in an otherwise inane story about fishing hits on a strong ecological point --- an odd mixture that again makes you wonder if they understand the context. Yet in "Watching Girl", they manage a perfectly subtle song with a definite message. In "Bear Up Bison", a strangely warped take on XTC's "Making Plans for Nigel", knowledge of XTC's lyrics amazingly play off and deepen the lyrics of "Bear Up Bison". Coincidence? Luck? Intelligence? Beats me. However, it's certainly a lot of wonderfully strange fun. Since this appeals to the very strange side of my tastes which no one else ever seems to share, I should add my usual final disclaimer: Your mileage may vary. Hi, Just read the following in the bowie newsgroup and thought that Suzanne might want to do something with it to get Ashes to Ashes on it: --------------- >>> Reported in last weeks NME - DB has approached Suede, Smashing Pumpkins and U2 >>> amongst others to provide tracks for an album of Bowie covers. Apparently, only >>> the Smashing Pumpkins has so far decided which song they are going to cover >>> (Moonage Daydream). >>Since when do people go out fishing for other groups to cover their songs? >>Isn't that a little like saying, I'm throwing a special party to honor myself, >>please come? >I understood it the other way around, like David saying to himself `Wow, lots >of songs of mine have been covered, let's see if I can get some of those covers >together on one album.' --------------- Since Happy and Kevin know Dr. Toby Mountain who also works for Rykodisc, if I am not mistaken, there seems to be a way to connect with DB himself. It sounds like an opportunity for wide exposure that shouldn't be missed, IMHO.
