(That's what I did--they say they're temporarily out of stock of heavenly voices but should have new ones in Monday. It is a limited edition, so don't wait too long.) Now, for the review: Excellent! This is the best value for the $, I've seen in a long time. $22 gets you two disks in exquisite packaging, reminiscent of 4AD. Each disc is about 78 minutes long and has 18-19 songs. While there are few standout tracks, each disk is solid and filled with haunting melodies and evocative, lilting vocals. After three listens to each, I still have a hard time remembering any particular song. They all blend together very well, even though instrumentally they range from simple acoustic, to ambient, to somewhat midieval. All have female vocals. Closest thing to This Mortal Coil's Filigree and Shadow I've ever heard, and not just a poor imitation. This is a great album to go to sleep to, to calm you down, or to make love to. Not a good album to dance to. Also, if you're into lyrics, you may not like it. Very little of the album's lyrics are intelligible, partially because many of the songs are done by European bands and the vocals aren't in English to begin with. But if you like Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, and the more ethereal sounds, I'm sure you'll like this. However there are no songs that really stand out and grab you. I doubt that any of the songs will become my favorite song. Unlike This Mortal Coil's albums where certain tracks really seem to stand out. There are a couple (two?) songs I don't really care for, but even they are not bad. I hadn't heard a single one of these bands before, so I don't know much about them. If you want to know more, order a Projekt:Darkwave catalog. It looks like they have plenty of cool ecto-ish bands. If you like 4AD artists, I'm sure you'll like most of what they produce. (They even have a 4AD Covers Tribute CD). Here is the track listings. So an account of the American Ecto Party over the weekend will have to stay fixated a bit longer at the Opening Soon at a Mailer Near You stage :-). Be that as it may: Uli grepels: >Mitch again was successfully in totally goofing up his return address so that >my mailer tried to mail an answer to two different invalid nonexisting sites: I'm not entirely sure what he means by that, but if a mailer is working corr- ectly it ought to translate the incoming mail's address into a form it can use to send out a reply. Handle fields shouldn't affect that. I suspect some kind of a glitch in the mailer at his site. WRT Anthony's post on squirrel parachuting: Finally, there was success yester- day in luring the squirrel who's been squatting in my place for the last week back to the great outdoors. I may never know whether one of the cats from out in back, whom I saw emerging from the rear of the structure while _I_ was out in back, deserves the credit for finally chasing it out :-). It probably ought to give me pause that all the adjectives the Georgia Straight article said have been used to describe Jane S. could also be used to describe me, with the possible exception of "Ethereal." Go figure :-). Thanks again to Tim for the CD. His mention of HM Customs reminded me that yesterday, the PBS station in Chicago ran "Camelot," two iterations of "To Play The King," and a special on the royal family's horrible year, and yet didn't think to acknowledge that they had packaged all these variations on a theme in a single day's schedule. I went out hoping that Kemp Mill would have stayed open late to start selling _Under the Pink_. They didn't. 12 miles into DC for some turned-out lights. Grrr. I know, I shouldn't complain. Last time I made the post-Northern-Exposure jaunt, I got _The Red Shoes_ *and* a TRS t-shirt. But damnit, I wanted the new Tori album. Now I have to wait 'til tomorrow morning after my lab meeting but before class so I can run out and buy it. After the Kemp Mill fiasco I decided to try Tower, not really expecting anything. After wandering around for a few minutes and checking the store's Happy quotient (one "RhodeSongs" under H...they've *definitely* been moving her albums...I hope they've sold!). All alone, sad, depressed, in Tower records, no one to hold me back. I had to buy *something*...couldn't just wait for tomorrow (Tori and maybe Kirsten Hersch). And lo, there was something that was a complete unknown quantity. Well, not entirely unknown. I'd heard some *really* fucked up vocals on a cool track by a little-known singer from Albany. Yup. I found, and bought, _Muse of Intent_ by Mitch Elrod's Swim Team at Tower-DC. Great cover painting. Anybody know the name of the monster? This one struck me as very Roger Dean. The music? Well, how to describe it? Folk rock with jazz/progressive/ electric overtones with totally surreal and often incomprehensible (from an interpretive lit-crit frame of mind) lyrics. I'd be tempted to say it's definitely not ectofodder if it didn't have a tremendous sort of Aural Gratification feel to it. The sound is superb...but I wouldn't expect anything less these days from Kevin, Pat, Bob, and Dr. Mountain. I'm a bit weirded out by a couple of the songs ("Technical No How", "archaeopteRYX PLACE (Goes by Time as)") and the lyrics *really* make no sense in a lot of place (has he been taking the study-at-home Liz Frazer "How to String Together Completely Unrelated Words For Fun and Profit" course?). But Mitch does come up with some really cool stuff. "RGB" is really wonderful, lyrically. And a lot of songs are just really great to listen to, even if I can't figure out what Mitch is trying to tell me. "All the Ways-Land", "Private Geometry," and much, much more! I *never* would have guessed, after "Wrong Century," that Mitch Elrod would turn out to be such a good singer. Incidentally, I've now heard 5 tracks from _Under the Pink_ (even if I don't have it) and, well, sorry, KaTe, sorry, Sarah, Tori's just blown you two out of the water. (especially Sarah. I still don't like FTE nearly as much as TRS. maybe I'll like it more when I have the CD) Anyway. I need to be at work in 8 hours. Definitely bed time. Jeff |Jeffrey C. It says at the beginning, "Please read the FLAME at the end of the FAQ before ordering. It can save a lot of unpleasantness later," but in fact the *entire* FAQ is as close to a flame as any piece of literature I've ever seen from a "professional" outfit (at least one which actually expects people to do business with it). The whole thing has a tone which I can best describe as: "We're humble music lovers who are doing you a really huge favor, so do everything exactly like we say and don't f*ck with us or we'll do everything we can to ruin your credit rating and reputation in general, and by the way if we should accidentally happen to f*ck with *you* we might make it up to you but on our own terms and in our own timeframe, and if you don't like it go shop at Sam Goody." (Parts of this summary are in fact exaggerated only slightly from the actual text.) They also promise to remove your name from their mailing list if you don't order from them with a certain amount of regularity. It's a amazingly paranoid piece of literature, one that seems to assume that everyone in its audience is intent on violating IGG's trust and trying to rip them off. I dunno, I'd be kinda wary of ordering from a place with this kind of attitude, which I'm sure in their eyes just makes me one of those cretins who is "not prepared to accomodate the delays and frustrations that are inherent in ordering through the mail." We went to Discafe, a very bizarre place that was actually having a Tori listening party, although they weren't since their UPS shipment didn't come in. The place, which is open til at leat 2 every night, actually may not have had any discs for sale. It was hard to tell. It's a coffee shop with cd listening stations all over it. You can listen to their default 11 discs, or have them put one in special for you (1 drink minimum for this service). They have a small but quite good selection (no Happy though) for listening. I found LIz Phair's disc quite cheep, and happily brought it up to the counter, where the guy said I could listen to it, but they had no copies for sale. Jeff had the same experience with the Holly Cole Trio. So, we went home discless with $1 off rain checks for Under THe Pink.
