Sad but true. Believe me, if they could make money off 'em, we'd have just as many singles available here as they do in the U.K. However, on the bright side, I have heard that Atlantic U.S. *is* indeed planning on releasing Tori's cover versions from the limited edition "Cornflake Girl" single on a domestic EP. Eventually, I would not be surprised to see some sort of B-side compilation. Songs like "Mary" and "Flying Dutchman" are just too strong to be left to the few thousand collectors who buy CD singles. If you read RDT, you probably saw the interview posted in which Tori said she wanted to take some time off after the UtP tour to have a baby...! If that turns into an extended break, Atlantic will probably be desperate for something to release, so who knows? "Can there be any doubt," I asked on RDT, "that Tori's baby will be a beautiful redhead?" I even added a ;-). And of course, someone had to jump in and state, "Hey, Tori *dyes* her hair!" Irony is completely lost on that bunch. Anyway, apologies for not posting any listings of talk show musical guests last week. Again and again, artists put interesting b-sides on UK releases, and > american fans are forced to fork over tons of money whose profits go to > greedy importers. If history is any guide, all or most of the singles-only tracks will someday show up on an "odds & sods" type compilation, or as part of a boxed set. My pet theory has always been that one reason that artists (or their management) release different extra tracks in different coun- tries is to give the hard-core fans something to feel "exclusive" about. In other words, part of the excitement surrounding an artist is the non- trivial effort required to locate and buy all the different singles. If everything was released in every country, and all the back catalog stuff that should be reissued was reissued in every country, then _anyone_ could buy all the "obscure" tracks and they wouldn't be as desirable to (at least some) hard core fans. Hasn't anyone else had the experience of, after hav- ing searched for some rare import for eons and then finding it as a domes- tic reissue, thought "oh yeah, it's out domestically now, I'll have to pick it up sometime?" Whereas when it's an import, getting a copy can sometimes become a quest for the Holy Grail... I dunno, maybe it's just me. - Larry ======================================================================== Subject: Re: Danielle Dax (was Re: Two Reviews) Date: Sun, 27 Feb 94 10:35:17 CST From: Larry Spence > I have had both _Blast..._ and _Dark..._ ever since I saw her live in > 1991 (wow, I was blown away!). Most of her older releases have been reissued within the last couple years in the UK. So far, I've only picked up _Pop-Eyes_, which was well worth the import price. I think that most of _Inky Bloaters_ is on the US compilation, so that reissue is probably for completists only. If you can't get your store to order them, World Serpent Distribution (ads in several current music mags) sells them by mail order from the UK. The discs that are near-impossible to locate are a couple of Japanese CD compilations of Dax remixes and b-sides. I believe the titles are _Up Amongst The Golden Spires_ and _The Chemical Wedding_. There's also a Peel Sessions CD with four tracks which is cheap and fairly easy to find. > Also, does anyone know what she is up to now? It's been a long while > since Blast... Multiple folds and the CD doesn't come out as easily. Of course I haven't gotten one in two years so maybe they've changed. If I get an album I really like that's in a digipak I'm going to get a jewel box for it. I am very careful about how I handle my CDs and booklets (maybe that's my problem: wanting them nice) and I know there is no way a cardboard digipak will survive very well for long if I listen to the CD much. ->>food society. But the way they are I consider them much more wasteful. They are damaged less than digipaks IMO, and when they do glue has done the trick sometimes. However I do think the hinge design is too weak. The appearance of the jewel box isn't very important, just the unique material inside. I don't replace them unless they are beyond use or not protecting the CD and booklet anymore. Now don't get me wrong, I don't like the idea of throwing out jewel boxes at all. I assume the plastic in jewel boxes isn't recyclable since they have no symbol. ***Why aren't they?*** That would solve the problem fairly well. Besides, all 3 digipaks I have have plastic in them anyway. (maybe new ones don't?) It seems to me that recycling just a jewel box would be easier than recycling a digipak, especially a digipak consisting of cardboard, paper, and plastic. Also, digipaks use a LOT more paper/cardboard, even if it is recycled, than that used with a jewel box. So, my hope is for recyclable jewel boxes, and perhaps a better design. I mean they don't need to be so thick either. Until then I'll ask if anyone knows how I can get a UK-single-style jewel box to replace the broken one that my used "Love and Anger" CD single came with. The previous owner obviously didn't care about it much (they sold it after all) and treated it badly. At least it wasn't a digipak cause then it would have been ruined beyond repair. /-\ |_ |= >< arg@kilimanjaro.opt-sci.arizona.edu (MST=GMT-7) MST3k 42 KT "Argh!!! I can't even remember email adresses correctly. So here it is again, that happened on last Wednesday: Hi. somehow it would have been TOOOOO nice yesterday. What? The TV: ARGH!!! 1. In the morning MTV announces Tori for MTV Most Wanted in the evening. She didn't came. Anyone got her on another day? Or will she come today? (Good possibility, since I think I saw 5. already yesterday morning, and maybe the announcement was in there.) 2. Arte shuffles (announced in videotext, together with NEW (!) VPS times) the announced program with several Norwegian specials (Mari Boine Persen and Bel Canto were featured). Because of 1. part of 2. got lost. And that without gaining anything from 1. What we managed to get from 2. was great, but why not all? 3. Lore Lorentz bites the dust yesterday. Therefore West-3 changes the announced program: they inserted a 45 minutes tribute to her. Well, I can live with that. Now what else do they do? They shifted the next programme, a 30 minutes special about a transvestite [sp?]. I never heard about that one before, and IMHO he/she isn't worth bothering at all. West-3 found it more important and did broadcast that. Afterwards I hoped for the announced 1h Rockpalast Classic with Nina Hagen Band. Nope. They thought 'we have to delete something, so we delete the Rock and leave the classic and the palaces'. Anyhow, they brought a 15 minutes film with classical music to background pictures of some palaces and castles and the like. Nothing against classical music, but I would have preferred Nina. Now ok, why? Well, this way they managed to readjust the timing of the next programmes. What were they? a) news. b) news from 20 years ago (!). c) news repetition from ARD of the same evening. d) news again. e) end of programme. Go figure. 4. premiere brought yesterday's David Letterman with Sinead O'Connor. That was, as is absolute normal with this pay tv station, broadcast exactly as sceduled. (You can set your clock by waiting for the next movie start on premiere.) Sinead's performance wasn't found to be very good by this writer of silly messages. Well, that was to expect somehow. But I don't complain. 5. MTV brought Alternate Nation. Somehow the same contents as was mentioned before: lots of female pop. About 5 videos and as many interview snippets from the Cocteau Twins, Birthday from the Sugarcubes, and some other interesting videos. Because of 4. and the therefore neccessary channel hopping (4. and 5. ran concurrently) I missed a few of the interview snippets. Otherwise perfect timing. Thanks to Mitch and Woj on IRC I knew that Sinead was in the second half of David Letterman. Again: ARGH! Bye, Uli P.S.: Luckily enough I wasn't successful in broadcasting a message about Tori on MTV to all rdt posters due to a not used .forward file in the HP-UX system I have online access.
