Date: Fri, 25 Feb 94 23:07:00 -0500 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu Today on the radio I heard Frente's cover of New Order's "Bizarre Love Triangle." This is an Australian band, and I'm fairly certain I've heard the name mentioned on Ecto before, so I'll hazard a not too-daring guess and wonder if that might have been Anthony. The track I heard sounded like it might have been live in a studio--just a wonderful female vocal (kind of dreamy, ethereal, childlike (though nothing like Cranes)) and an acoustic guitar. A great cover of a great song, and definitely ectofodder. Any reviews of a full album? Jeff |Jeffrey C. Best thrill ride in town, and it's got a practical purpose too! :-) The night before I left, as Anthony Baxter has already described, I went to see the sublime Jane Siberry here in Melbourne. Wow, what a show. Jane had asked me to be sure and introduce myself when I interviewed her, so I summoned up the courage to go backstage afterwarsd and say hi. And for the first time in ages, I was lost for words, and very, very nervous. :) Friday night I went to see Peter Gabriel's concert here; he was pretty impressive, though most of his stage show was left behind as it was apparently too expensive to bring here. I don't know about that beard, though, Peter. Hmmm. Anyway, the tickets I was given turned out to be in the middle of the radio competition winners' section, and not one of them was interested in the show, which did spoil the mood somewhat. Not to mention the fact that from the bit of the stadium where I sat, everyone on stage was a little white blur. Not Drowning Waving supported, and joined Peter on stage for "In Your Eyes", which was amusing. I'll be reviewing both the Siberry and Gabriel shows for Beat, so I'll post them here when they're done. I'm still quite exhausted from my trip, and I'm oh so backlogged with mail... Their new album's a whole bunch of fun, and their keyboardist looks like Linda McCartney... :-) Jeffy jeffs: > Today on the radio I heard Frente's cover of New Order's "Bizarre Love > Triangle." That was indeed me. Frente! are a Melbourne band who had major mainstream chart success here last year and in 1992. That cover of "Bizarre Love Triangle" is something they do live but only turns up on CD on the current UK single. It's not even available in Australia. > The track I heard sounded like it might have been live in a studio--just a > wonderful female vocal (kind of dreamy, ethereal, childlike (though nothing > like Cranes)) and an acoustic guitar. A great cover of a great song, and > definitely ectofodder. The singer is Angie Hart, and she has a wonderful voice. Those who've heard Stina Nordenstam will have a good idea of the general style and sound of her voice, mixed with a touch of the Harriet Wheelers. :) > Any reviews of a full album? There's only one album so far, "Marvin The Album". It's t'riffic. I recently sent that album, their "rare" first EP "Whirled" and the new single "Lonely" (fab stuff!) to Tim Cook, so it's over to Tim for the review... :-) Sam Murgie comments: > Sarah McLaughlin- Solace - excellent, except for the nauseating blast from the > past _Wear Your Love Like > Heaven_ I *like* "Wear Your Love...". It is indeed their debut; they signed to Volition and Nettwerk at the same time, and that album came out here as a Canadian import, distributed by Volition, even though they're a Sydney band. That album contains a few demos and radio-session tracks as well as other bits and pieces, and I like it a lot, much more than "Like Stars..." > By 1991's _Like Stars in My Hands_, they had found their voice. It's far less "world music" than the newer album, but that's one of the things I like about it. I'd recommend it highly. Alan follows up on this thus: > Gee whiz.. All hail the technology which guides us through snowy winter days! I picked up an import Tori single yesterday, and it go me to thinking. Does Tori pick up any extra profits from an imported copy? No. So why the hell doesn't she release some of these songs in the United States for us fans? Again and again, artists put interesting b-sides on UK releases, and american fans are forced to fork over tons of money whose profits go to greedy importers. Kate set a nice precedent by releasing 'Home for christmas' and 'Show a Little Devotion' in one neat package in the U.S. She even earned extra money from the American fans who bought it. Maybe tori would consider releasing a lmtd. edition of Cornflake Girl or God or whatever that included 'If 6 Were 9' and the other songs. She would earn the extra money, and those of us who do not have the import (there were so few made...) could have our own version. Grr...
