I found out just over a week ago, but since I couldn't go and couldn't think of anyone I knew would *would* go (well, other than those, like, Mike, and I just made some assumptions about him), I didn't bother posting to Ecto. Jane will be at the Birchemere (which is in Alexandria, though not really near Old Town) on March 10th. This is a Thursday. To be more specific, it's the Thursday two days after I'm seeing the Cocteau Twins. Which is one of the reasons I won't be seing Jane. The other reason is that I've got a class that evening, and while I could probably make it to the concert in time after class, the hassle, combined with the sheer lack o' funds (thanks, Cocteaus, Sarah, Tori) just make it Not Worth Dealing With. On a cassette tape the two different sides are on > each side of the tape strip in two tracks going in opposite > directions. [Dons Mr. Wizzer pointy hat] Hmm. Possible, but most consumer machines I've seen have guides on the heads to keep the tape lined up. Assuming that only this tape is misbehaving, and that it continues to misbehave, there is another possible explanation: that the tape snarled into two half-twists due to poor capstan/roller friction or a sticky takeup rotor or reel (When's the last time the deck was cleaned? Has the cassette been left in the sun?). When this occurs, it causes the heads of the deck to "see" _the back side of the tape, upside-down_. The audio effect of this malfunction generally includes some high-end loss, as well as time-reversal. Try looking at the "problem" tape casette closely. Quick check: If this is a tape you recorded, compare the appearance of the surface of the misbehaving tape with one of the same type and brand (ideally, the same _batch_) that works OK. Generally, the back surface of the tape looks different from the front surface--lighter color, different finish... Generally, one of two things has happened: One possible outcome is for one of the two half-twists to travel along with the tape being taken up. If this happened, you may be able to see the "bump" in the tape where the half-twist rolled up on the takeup reel. You'll have to roll the tape to that spot and fish out the half-twist. Another possible outcome is for both the half-twists to stay near the mouth of the cassette, in which case a little judicious fishing with, e.g., a BIC pen cap can reel out enough tape for you to untwist it and set things right. The watchword is patience. Once it's fixed, it's a good idea to re-tension the tape by rewinding and fast-forwarding, going over the whole tape once in both directions. Listen to the tape feed as it winds. If it sounds "funny", like a tiny car stuck in the mud, it may be that the cassette housing is to blame for the bad tape tension that caused the malfunction. If so, you may be due for more trouble from this particular cassette--best dub a fresh one. If *all* tapes you fast-forward sound "funny", it's possible that (a) you have funny ears :), or (b) your tape deck might have take-up reel drive problems. Ahem. I've got to admit, it sounded great, starting slowly with sparse and gradually picking up steam until it reached that Springsteen-trademark wall of sound. It has never been released officially, but I'm sure that bootleg copies exist as this WAS a stereo broadcast. BTW, that should have been "sparse instrumentation". dave ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 22 Feb 1994 07:29:48 -0400 (EDT) From: DAVE Subject: DMX music service Is anyone familiar with this service? 36 channels of stereo music that is brought to you via cable lines. Channel 10 is called "folk music", and while that is definitely a misnomer, I have found that there are a lot of ecto-compatible artists being played there, including Jane Siberry (heard The White Tent The Raft just yesterday), Sarah McLachlan, Indigo Girls, Victoria Williams, and Holly Near. If anyone is interested, I'll post a portion of a playing list later this week. If you're not familiar with it, it's pretty neat. There is never any talking, just non-stop music. Current songs are displayed on a small LCD remote control, including artist, title, that CD it came from, even label order numbers. The biggest drawback is similar to that for bad radio stations (and in Knoxville, that's all we've got); there is an "approved" playlist for each channel, which means if you listen to any channel for more than about six hours, you've pretty much exhausted your listening options for that week. The playlist turnover from week to week seems pretty good, though, and occasionally you hear a real gem. Friday on the classic rock station I heard Running Up That Hill, followed about six songs later by On Reflection by Gentle Giant. Plus, I had not heard Sky Pilot in years. Let me know if you'd like to see a partial playlist. Oh, and I am NOT connected in any way with the cable TV industry. dave ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 22 Feb 1994 09:14:08 -0500 (EST) From: Don Gibson Subject: RE: Because the Night The original "Because the Night" is included on *Patti Smith* album entitled "Easter". We're twins, so I wanted to do something special. I was also the best man. Since I wanted to ask Karen to marry me anyway, I figured that that day would be it. So I called up Bill & Jen and asked them if it was OK. This was about a month ahead of time. That whole time people would ask me if I had my 'best man speech' ready.
