What an *amazing* show*. Johnette sounds absolutely incredible live. I don't know if she sounds "better" (I think Loreena McKennitt, Lisa Gerard, and a few other such folks sound better live; their voices are fuller and even more breathtaking than on their recordings) but there's a definite grittiness and livelihood that's not there on the albums. Much to my surprise, after seeing the Blonde play on some show on MTV (in which Johnette looked like a misplaced Ramone sibling), Johnette was done up in a nifty dress which looked great but left her free enough to whirl around the stage like a madwoman. And does she move! Hell, she never stops. The set list was almost perfect. A pretty good mix from the three good albums and "Ghost of a Texas Lady's Man" from _Walking in London_. Off the other three, some from the top of my head were "Haunted Head," "Bloodletting," "Days", "Run, Run, Run", "God is a Bullet", "Carry Me Away," "Jenny I Read," "Mexican Moon," "When You Smile," and "Tomorrow, Wendy." They also did a number of covers, including Hendrix (can't think of the name of the song, but it's one I actually know--and it wasn't "Little Wing" (which was on the "Caroline" CD single)), Tears for Fears ("Shout"...I never would have imagined Concrete Blonde performing this song, but they did a good job of it). There were also a couple of covers I didn't recognize (something about 100 games of solitaire, and soemthing with "respect yourself" repeated in the chorus. That one was incredibly familiar, but I was never able to place it). The show ended with a cover of the Janis Joplin tune regarding Mercedes Benzes. The lyrics were somewhat changed...one verse sticks in mind: "Oh Lord, won't you buy me some kind of tv. Sally Jessy's waiting to talk to me at three..." Heh heh. That was done a capella. Overall it was a superb concert. I gather the band has a number of dates left on this tour (so I'm assuming based on the list of cities on the back of the t-shirt my sister bought, and the fact that DC was fairly close to the top). If you have any interest in Concrete Blonde, I'd strongly recommend seeing them live. They're a definite treat. One of the things I noticed about it was the piano on it. And one of the first things I noticed about Tori when I heard the Me and a Gun EP was the similarity of piano phrasing. I'm caught up now, though. Some people have said that Tori's Cornflake Girl has marked si similarities to a few of Kate's latest. I would just like to point out that I cannot stop thinking of an older Kate song. It seems to me that the jangling bell sound on CG could have been (I am not saying 'was') lifted directly from December Will Be Magic Again. Yesterday I purchased a ticket for the Sarah Mclachlan concert on March 5 here in Austin, Texas. Anybody else on the mailing list(s) local to the area, and going to see her here? I must admit that I am a newbie to Sarah. I thought that I would start off by seeing her live, then decide if I need to purchase one of her CDs. I've really only heard one song by her, the one that actually received airplay around here, Into the Fire. Also, for those Austinites or those near enough to be interested, I happily happened across a notice that Jane Siberry will be on the UT campus on March 11, at the Cactus Cafe. Upon asking, I received the information that the tickets will go on sale Friday of this week. As above, anybody else out there going to see her, and maybe wish to get together? I am a little more experienced with Jane. I have When I Was a Boy (Which I am pleased to note was playing last night at the Cactus, obviously to promote the date. I was there to see my favorite local artist, Michele Solberg. Nyah! Nyah! We have her and you don't!) I am waiting until after the Jane concert/unconcert thing before deciding on further Jane purchases. So, I guess I'll be seeing both Jane and Sarah. I wonder what my chances at Tori are. The list of concert dates has nothing near enough for the first US leg. The last European date so far is May 5, so I presume for the moment that she may be heading this way directly after. That may put her here smack in the middle of final exams or graduation (which I would gladly miss in favor of Tori, if I didn't have family coming in). Or, an even worse scenario, is that Tori arrive at the east coast, plays dates close to my home town in Birmingham, AL around the time of graduation (May 20?), then moves westward to Texas just as I am heading full tilt eastward to home. Ah, paranoia! By the way, anyone here have residence near the aforementioned hometown. I don't know if I will be able to continue on the list(s) after graduation, and so I might want to have a contact to talk to and to gain ecto/rdt information from. I hope that this wasn't too long. He sent me the CD about 2 weeks ago, but it's been really difficult trying to listen to anything except _Under the Pink_. Anyway, I will post my general impressions which will probably change if I listen to the CD a bit more. First of all, I love the packaging. The booklet is very well done. It includes lyrics, extensive credits, and many really wonderful pictures. I was shocked at how much care was put into the booklet, considering this is a debut. EMI must have a lot of faith in Margot. After reading the opinions of other people who had heard the album, I was expecting the worst on the first 2 songs. But I was pleasantly surprised by "Fall Down." It may be a bit over-produced, but I like it. However, "How Do You Sleep" is a bit too poppy for my taste. As everyone said, things do get much better after these first 2. My favorites right now are "Pool of Blood," "Arms of Earth," and "Bellyman." And, even though I hate making these kind of comparisons, "Water" is very Kate-esque. Margot even sounds like Kate when she sings "Aphrodite dies" in that song. Over all, the CD is not perfect, but it shows a great deal of potential. Margot has a strong voice which can be sweet at times and very powerful at others. I think that she would benefit immensely if she avoided over- production. "Adored," for example, is just as poppy as "How Do You Sleep," but it doesn't suffer from the bombast of "HDYS." Also, she should write more songs without co-writers. The only song she wrote totally on her own ("Bellyman") is arguably the best song on the album. A whole CD of "Bellyman" type songs would be something I would buy in a heart beat. Regardless of my complaints, _Sleeping with the Lion_ is a very impressive debut, and I look forward to hearing Margot progress as an artist. --- Stuart __________________________________________________________________________ Stuart Myerburg People always ask, "Are they lovers or Emory Univ.
