I read it as more to do >with different sides to one's personality, e.g. being manic and depressive >or schizophrenic, and having to balance and live with them. I feel constrained to point out that schizophrenia, multiple personality, and manic-depressive illness are, in fact, very different conditions, though the first two, especially, are often confused in the public mind. The latest edit- ion of the _Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders_, published by the American Psychiatric Association, offers good descriptions of each. For that matter, "having different sides to one's personality," IMHO WIVH, need not necessarily imply the existence of any clinical mental disorder. Nor, of course, does "having to balance and live with them." My subjective sense is that most reputable shrinks would view these as classic symptoms of what is commonly referred to in medical jargon as The Human Condition. As far as I have been able to discern, the consensus in these pages is that the lyrics to "Cohabitabitants" do evoke imagery of psychiatric symptoms, but the prevailing opinion is somethat divided between clinical depression and multiple personality. Schizophrenia, which is a more generalized disintegration of the personality than the other conditions, would appear to fit the bill less well. I spent much of yesterday evening on the 100th floor of the Sears Tower, atten- ding Friends of Downtown's awards reception, and the scenic vista through the misty snow was interesting. It wasn't heavy enough to obscure the view altoge- ther, but combined with the dusky lighting conditions outside, it produced an interesting soft-focus effect for looking at the surrounding buildings, the lake, the lights outlining the streets, etc. For better or worse, I never got the irresistible impulse to spell out "Happy Rhodes" in little blobs of Brie on the buffet table :-). Further down, Vickie vickies: > and now Jane is Jesus and Lisa is an Angel. Why, oh why, did I first read that and promptly think of Laura Nyro's "Time and Love," with its "Jesus Was an Angel" line? Could I be making a mental associa- tion with the crapshoot I committed by buying the _New York Tendaberry_ CD, on which today's digital magic may or may not be able to transcend the limitations of 1969 studio technology to create a better sound than comes through on my cassette copy? On the other hand, I can't entirely agree with Vickie that Happy was turned down by _all_ the best alternative labels. After all, isn't Aural Gratifica- tion _the_ best single alternative label? How could it be any less than the best, when Happy's on it? :-) It's been awhile since I shopped for fruit juice in a health food store, gour- met shop, or other specialized emporium. So I haven't yet ruled out that such places might have blueberry, or blue raspberry in the alternate, which couldn't help but taste better than the stuff that Vickie stumbled onto while still fitt ing into the traditional ecto color scheme. As for the other stuff, I stand by my earlier suggestion: lace each 1 part of the infamous Big Hug with 3 parts grain neutral spirits, which should help kill the taste of the former. In the worst case, try taking a drag on a Gauloises Disque Bleu or two between sips of the Big Hug; that should definitely mask the taste of the latter :-). I'm surprised that WKQX (aka Q101) would go in for Tori with their new format (hard alternative rock). I would have been even more surprised if they'd gone in for her with their old format (soft mass-market rock). In any event, it will give me my first reason to give them any serious attention since most of the fun went out of Robert Murphy's morning show, when most of his longtime sidekicks were let go. Speaking of Tori, Rose is selling the _Little Earth- quakes_ CD for $10.99 at the moment. >Pooh! CNN's Showbiz Today just did a long feature on the Grammys, and >not one mention of kd. Grrr! On Grammy night, _World News Now_ ran a variety of winning records with station breaks, the weather and sports, etc. They did _Constant Craving_ under a sport s-score crawl. I've never regretted watching _WNN_ and not _Showbiz Today_. Maybe Vickie should consider switching :-). Let me be the umpteenth to congratulate Klaus on compiling the ecto discography . It will make it easier for me to come up with wacky ideas for segues. This afternoon alone, I was able to put it to good use in throwing the following together: "Take This Job and Shove It" by Johnny Paycheck with "I'll Let You Go" "I'll Let You Go" with "Where Do I Go" "Where Do I Go" with "To The Funnyfarm" anything by Elvis with "He's Alive" :-) mjm says: >PG played somewhat thin versions of Digging in the Dirt and Washing of >the Water Thin maybe, but there was still that appealing equipoise between the dirt and r the water :-). It is reassuring, in a way, to see that Happy has no monopoly on the notion :-). Relph" Subject: Dreaming of the Ninth Wave I was standing in my kitchen this morning, washing a pot and singing "Play the Game", when suddenly Happy spoke to me. She said, "my next album is going to be my Concept Album." Yeah, I said, all the songs about one topic. After all, she's done a two-song concept already. My favourites from _equi poise_? "Runners", "He Will Come", "The Flight", "Save Our Souls" (it's beautiful and it bites), "Closer", and "Play the Game". "Cohabitants" is good too, but the music is a bit jarring. I think "PtG" has wonderful lyrics, and I hope it comes true for all of us. "Closer" is a strength song. "Save Our Souls" is bitter, and President Clinton should be listening. Maybe not emotionally bitter, but a bitter pill to swallow. And quite funny. I love irony. And the vampire does a tango. It seems to me, observing as is my wont, that many of we Ectophytes tend to like acoustic tinged female vocal music. Personally I don't have a lot of patience for most acoustic "folk" music. Perhaps that is why I am one of the few who vocally supports _days of open Hand_ as Suzanne Vega's best album. It is wonderfully produced, a little dark, and lyrically obscure. It presents vignettes, but what do they mean? (If you know the answer, send in now!) I enjoy Happy's music, but I tend to enjoy most the music that is partially acoustic and partially electric. I don't like it when she goes off the deep end into electronic synth-space, but I tend not to like the songs that are mostly acoustic. Musically speaking, of course, I'll leave her lyrics out of this discussion. Note that I speak merely of tendencies, "In Hiding" works (for me). Merely an observation. Geez, that'll teach me to not log on for a week- it took me FOUR HOURS to go through all the mail, about 98% of which was from Ecto. Don't you guys have better things to do with your lives than post to this group???? :) Anyway, just wanted to note that "Cohabitants" is starting to grow on me, although I don't believe it will ever be one of my favorites on the album. Doug, I just made a Happy Sampler for someone last week, and I revised the list from my (Un)Official Happy Sampler thus: Side A: Rainkeeper Oh The Love Possessed Step Inside Come Here Let Me Know, Love The Perfect Irony Friend You'll Be If Love Is A Game, I Win Would That I Could Off From Out From Under Me Ecto Ode Side B: Poetic Justice Waking Up Feed The Fire Phobos All Things (Mia ia io) Words Weren't Made For Cowards Runners He Will Come The Flight Mother Sea I purposely left out the extra tracks from the reissued CDs, since the point of any Happy Sampler I give out is to coerce the recipient into buying the CDs for themselves, so I don't want to ruin the surprises the extra tracks hold. Nice Discography Klaus, though I must admit to being quite amused by the inclusion in the key of such categories as 8-Track tape and Mini-Disc.
